KINGSTON · MARCH · 17.99° N
Kingston in March averages a high of 83.6°F and a low of 71.1°F, with measurable rain on about 3.4 days of the month. These are 1991-2020 normals that Open-Meteo computes from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis for the model grid cell over the city. That cell sits on the sheltered south coast, the island’s driest side. The north shore, where most of Jamaica’s resorts line up, has a different climate.
For a trip built around Port Royal’s forts, the monuments of National Heroes Park and a walk through downtown’s Georgian streets, March brings dry weather and twelve hours of daylight. Neighborhoods and hotels stay the same all year, so we cover them in where to stay in Jamaica, and the island-wide calendar in the best time to visit Jamaica.

Open-Meteo computes these normals from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020, on the grid cell at 17.997°N, 76.794°W over Kingston. ERA5 is a model value for a square of territory. A thermometer at Norman Manley airport keeps a separate record, and a station reading can differ, most often on the overnight low. The cell gives March an average high of 83.6°F, an average low of 71.1°F and 1.49 inches of precipitation across the month.
Rain reaches 0.10 inch on 3.4 days in an average March, roughly one day in nine. A soaking of an inch or more is rarer still, at 0.1 day a month, or about one March in ten. On a typical wet day you lose an hour or an afternoon of sightseeing, so keep one indoor stop in each day’s plan and move it forward when clouds build.
Nights settle at 71.1°F against 83.6°F afternoons, a spread of 12.5°F. That is short-sleeve weather after dark, yet air-conditioned museums and taxis can feel cool, so pack one light long-sleeve layer. Sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat matter more, because the Port Royal forts are open-air sites. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest of the bag.
On March 15 the sun rises at 6:13 am and sets at 6:18 pm Jamaica time (UTC-5, with no daylight saving), for about 12 hours 05 minutes of daylight. Twilight is brief this close to the equator, so start any sunset walk at National Heroes Park by 5:30 pm and arrange your ride back before 6:30 pm.
Can you swim in Kingston in March? Sea temperature
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 81.7°F in March, averaged over 2015-2024. The figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade lower. Tables that quote a round-the-clock mean may show a slightly cooler number, and both can be correct for the same water.
At about 81.7°F the water runs 10.6°F above the average dawn air of 71.1°F and 1.9°F below the average afternoon high. An early swim feels warmer in the water than out of it, and most swimmers will find it comfortable for a long session. Kingston’s own waterfront is a working harbor, so for beach time head west along the south coast or over the mountains to Ocho Rios.
We found no wind or swell series for March off Kingston, so we give no figure for chop or surf. Before a boat trip out of the harbor or a swim off the Palisadoes, read a same-day marine forecast and ask the operator about sea conditions before you pay.
How busy is Kingston in March? Crowds and prices
We found no hotel occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Kingston, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. For the island-wide seasons and how they shape a vacation budget, the best time to visit Jamaica goes month by month and what a Jamaica trip costs prices the days.
We have no booking-lead data either, so fix the flight first. Flights to Jamaica from the US covers the routes into Kingston’s Norman Manley International, and once the dates hold, rooms can follow. A two-night city stop pairs well with the Blue Mountains or the longer loop in our 7-day Jamaica itinerary.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Kingston, so we give no percentage. Ask each hotel for the all-in nightly total, taxes and fees included, before you book, and compare those totals across properties.
If one line of the budget stretches, make it a private driver for the Port Royal morning. Port Royal sits at the tip of the Palisadoes, well away from downtown, and a car at your door at 7 am reaches Fort Charles while the air is still closer to its 71.1°F low than its afternoon peak. Taxis and drivers are in getting around Jamaica, and self-drive in driving in Jamaica.
Things to do in Kingston in March

Most of Kingston’s heritage stands outdoors, and the Jamaica National Heritage Trust lists about forty sites for the city alone. With rain on only 3.4 days, a March week leaves nearly every day free for the open-air ones: fort ramparts, park monuments and street-front buildings.
Fort Charles, built in the late 1650s, was the first fort at Port Royal, a town called “the richest and wickedest city in the world” before the 1692 earthquake. Forts Carlisle, Morgan and Rocky followed, and Rockfort, at Kingston’s eastern edge, was fortified in 1694. In National Heroes Park, monuments honor Marcus Garvey (1964), Norman Manley (1972) and Nanny of the Maroons (1999). Downtown adds Holy Trinity Cathedral (1911, Byzantine revival), the Institute of Jamaica (1879) and Trench Town Culture Yard, built between 1940 and 1949.
Stone walls and bronze monuments stay the same all year. The air around them moves from a 71.1°F dawn to an 83.6°F afternoon, so put the forts and Heroes Park at either end of the day and keep the midday hours for the Institute of Jamaica or the cathedral interior. The things to do in Jamaica guide has the island-wide list.
We could not verify free admission anywhere in Kingston. Some sights need no ticket by their nature. The Ward Theatre, given to the city by Colonel Charles Ward in 1912, faces St. William Grant Park in the center of downtown. The Jamaica Georgian house at 150 East Street, Kingston Railway Station and Wesley Methodist Church, erected in 1825, all front the street and can be seen from the sidewalk.
Kingston in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Sunrise is at 6:13 am. Leave at 7:00 for Port Royal and walk Fort Charles by 8:00, before the heat builds. Back in town by 11:00, spend the midday at the Institute of Jamaica, then take a long lunch. At 3:30 pm visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, and at 5:00 cross to National Heroes Park for the Garvey, Manley and Nanny monuments. Sunset comes at 6:18 pm, so have your ride booked for 6:15. Confirm each site’s hours the day before, since we could not verify them.
Day two. Start downtown at 8:00 with Kingston Parish Church, rebuilt around 1911 on its original foundations, then the Ward Theatre on St. William Grant Park, 150 East Street and Liberty Hall, center of the Kingston division of Garvey’s UNIA. After lunch, go to Trench Town Culture Yard with a guide or driver. If one of March’s 3.4 rain days lands on you, swap the order: church interiors and Liberty Hall first, the outdoor façades once the shower passes. Kingston in March vs February and April
| Kingston | February | March | April |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.7°F | 83.6°F | 85.0°F |
| Average low | 70.6°F | 71.1°F | 72.6°F |
| Precipitation | 1.03 in | 1.49 in | 1.62 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 2.5 | 3.4 | 4.1 |
| Sea surface (daily-max mean, 2015-2024) | 81.2°F | 81.7°F | 82.9°F |
Afternoons warm by 0.9°F from February to March and by another 1.4°F into April, from 82.7°F to 83.6°F to 85.0°F. Lows follow at 70.6°F, 71.1°F and 72.6°F. Rain rises from 1.03 to 1.49 to 1.62 inches, and rain days from 2.5 to 3.4 to 4.1. The air and rain normals share one ERA5 source and period. The sea figures come from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024 and read 81.2°F, 81.7°F and 82.9°F.
Moving to February gains you 0.46 inch less rain and about one fewer wet day, and costs you 0.5°F of sea warmth. Moving to April gains 1.2°F in the water, reaching 82.9°F, and costs 1.4°F of extra afternoon heat plus 0.7 of a rain day. Both shifts leave the forts and monuments exactly where they are.
Is March a good time to visit Kingston?
Yes, for travelers who come to Kingston for its history and street life: dry weather on most days, 83.6°F afternoons and twelve hours of light fit a two-day heritage stop well. No, if the trip is really a beach vacation, because Kingston’s waterfront is a harbor and the swimming lies elsewhere on the island.
If the answer is no, pick by what you want. February is the driest of the three, at 2.5 rain days and 82.7°F highs. April suits swimmers, with the sea at 82.9°F, and the south coast or Negril makes a better base for that trip than the capital.
Of February, March and April, March is the one where afternoons stay under 84°F while the sea already tops 81.5°F.
The last word
Book the flight, give Port Royal the first cool hours of day one, and keep an afternoon downtown for the monuments the Trust has declared. One of them is a single sculpture: Edna Manley’s “Negro Aroused,” made in 1935 and now a national monument in its own right. Check where it is displayed before you go, and let it anchor a Kingston March built on dry mornings and a 6:18 pm sunset.
