JAMAICA · KINGSTON · JANUARY
Kingston in January is dry, bright and warm enough for long walking days. By the 1991-2020 normals, the whole month collects just 1.12 inches of rain, and afternoons average 82.1°F. That is good weather for a city trip built around history, from the Port Royal forts to the monuments of National Heroes Park.
The capital faces a sheltered harbor on the south coast, a long drive from the north-shore resort strip. A Kingston stay is a city break first: churches, forts, museums and music history, with two nights (est.) covering the core. Flights from the US land at Norman Manley International, and our US flights guide lists the routes and flight times.

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 17.997° N, 76.794° W: a model estimate for a square of territory, not an airport thermometer. That cell lies over Kingston itself, on the sheltered south coast, the driest side of Jamaica. Read the average high of 82.1°F and low of 70.9°F as the capital’s climate. Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril on the north shore get their own figures.
Rain barely registers. In an average January, 2.7 days reach 0.10 inch of precipitation, roughly one day in eleven, and the normals show no January day at an inch or more. In practice, a full outdoor sightseeing day rarely needs a backup plan, and one compact umbrella in the day bag covers the odd shower.
Between the afternoon high and the overnight low, the gap is 11.2°F. Leave the jacket at home. A single long-sleeve layer handles an evening at 70.9°F, and the rest of the bag goes to sunscreen, a brimmed hat and closed walking shoes for downtown sidewalks. Our packing list covers the rest of a Jamaica bag.
On January 15, Kingston gets about 11 hours 12 minutes of daylight. Jamaica keeps Eastern Standard Time all year, so the sunrise-sunset.org times convert to a 6:40 a.m. sunrise and a 5:52 p.m. sunset. Dinner falls after dark, and an outdoor site planned for late afternoon needs to start by mid-afternoon to catch good light.
Can you swim in Kingston in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Yes. Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 82.1°F in January, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a round-the-clock average would. A dip at 7 a.m. meets water a little below it.
The water averages the same 82.1°F as the afternoon air, so wading in brings no cold shock. Getting out is another matter after sunset: the air heads toward its 70.9°F low while the sea holds its warmth, and a towel and a dry shirt belong in the beach bag. Beaches and boat trips near the capital are in our south coast guide.
We found no wind or swell series for the water off Kingston in January, so we give no wave height and no calm-day count. Before a boat trip or an open-water swim, check the local marine forecast on the day and ask the operator about conditions on the crossing.
How busy is Kingston in January? Crowds and prices
By the rain figures, January falls in the dry months. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data for Kingston, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. For a full cost picture across the island, from rooms to meals, our Jamaica trip cost guide prices the essentials.
We hold no booking-lead data either. Our working rule is to lock flights and a room four to six weeks out (est.), and earlier when your dates touch a US school break or a long weekend. Refundable rates keep the option open if the fares move.
We could not verify Kingston’s lodging-tax rate on an official page, so we give no percentage. When you compare hotels, ask each one whether its quoted nightly rate includes taxes and service charges, and compare totals rather than headline prices.
Spend the extra on a driver for day two. Kingston’s heritage sites stretch from Port Royal at the end of the harbor spit to Rockfort at the eastern edge of the city and Trench Town inland. A car with a driver strings them together within the 11 hours 12 minutes of January light. Our getting-around guide sets out the options, and our driving guide covers self-drive.
Things to do in Kingston in January

With an 82.1°F high and roughly one wet day in eleven, January keeps Kingston’s open-air heritage on the table from morning to late afternoon. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, the statutory body that declares National Monuments, lists about forty heritage sites for Kingston alone. Many of them are outdoors: forts, a park of monuments and whole runs of street frontage.
Start at Port Royal, called “the richest and wickedest city in the world” before the 1692 earthquake destroyed much of it, including the original St. Peter’s Church. Fort Charles, from the late 1650s, was the first fort there, followed by Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky. In National Heroes Park, monuments carry their dates: Marcus Garvey (1964), Norman Manley (dedicated September 16, 1972), Alexander Bustamante (completed October 1979) and Nanny of the Maroons (dedicated October 14, 1999). We found no opening hours or admission fees on a stable official page for any Kingston site, so call ahead.
The forts and monuments stay the same in every season. The daylight shifts: at 11 hours 12 minutes on January 15, the day ends at 5:52 p.m. Put the open ground of Port Royal and Heroes Park in the morning, and save the indoor stops for late afternoon: the Institute of Jamaica, established in 1879, and Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1911 in the Byzantine-revival style.
We could not verify a free-admission day at any ticketed site. The street frontages cost nothing to see: the two-story Jamaica Georgian house at 150 East Street, one of the few of its design left in the city, Kingston Railway Station on the same lines, and Wesley Methodist Church, erected in 1825. The 1907 Earthquake Monument marks the second quake that severely damaged the city.
Kingston in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one, downtown. Head out soon after the 6:40 a.m. sunrise to St. William Grant Park and the Ward Theatre, given to the city in 1912 by Colonel Charles Ward. Next comes Kingston Parish Church, erected around 1911 on the foundations of the original, then Liberty Hall, center of the Kingston division of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association. Spend the hottest hours inside the Institute of Jamaica. After lunch, walk National Heroes Park and finish at Holy Trinity Cathedral before the 5:52 p.m. sunset.
Day two, the edges. Take the driver out to Port Royal for Fort Charles in the morning light, and stop at Rockfort on the way back, fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo. Close the afternoon at Trench Town Culture Yard, one of the Central Housing Authority houses built between 1940 and 1949 (see our safety guide before you go). If a shower rolls in, swap Port Royal for the cathedral and museum interiors. With no inch-plus January day in the normals, the forts can usually wait a few hours.
Kingston in January vs December and February
| Kingston | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.5°F | 82.1°F | 82.7°F |
| Average low | 72.0°F | 70.9°F | 70.6°F |
| Precipitation | 1.84 in | 1.12 in | 1.03 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.9 | 2.7 | 2.5 |
| Sea surface (daily highs, 2015-2024) | 83.5°F | 82.1°F | 81.2°F |
On the same ERA5 grid cell and the same 1991-2020 period, January has the lowest afternoon high of the three, 82.1°F against 82.5°F in December and 82.7°F in February. Rain falls steadily through the winter: December collects 1.84 inches over 3.9 rain days, January 1.12 inches over 2.7, February 1.03 inches over 2.5. The sea, from the Marine API’s 2015-2024 daily highs, cools month by month from 83.5°F to 82.1°F to 81.2°F.
Moving four weeks earlier to Kingston in December wins 1.4°F of sea and nights 1.1°F warmer, at the cost of 0.72 inch more rain and 1.2 more rain days. Moving four weeks later to Kingston in February trims 0.09 inch of rain and adds 0.6°F to the high, but the sea drops 0.9°F and the nights run 0.3°F cooler.
Is January a good time to visit Kingston?
Yes, for a city and heritage trip: dry days, a manageable 82.1°F high and enough light to walk from Ward Theatre to Heroes Park in one go. Travelers after a resort beach week should look north instead, to Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or Negril, and fold Kingston in as a two-night stop on our seven-day itinerary.
Pick December if warm water leads your list, with its 83.5°F sea and 72.0°F nights. Pick February for the driest of the three months, at 1.03 inches, if you can live with an 81.2°F sea. A day in the Blue Mountains above the city fits any of the three.
Of the three winter months we compare, only January matches its sea to its afternoon air, both at 82.1°F.
The last word
Settle the dates, then book the driver for your second day. The rest of Kingston in January runs on foot, between the 6:40 a.m. sunrise and a 5:52 p.m. sunset, through a city the Heritage Trust credits with about forty sites. Somewhere on that list sits Edna Manley’s sculpture Negro Aroused, made in 1935 and a declared national monument: ask your driver where it stands today and make it the last stop.
