Best Time to Visit Carvoeiro: Sea Temperatures, Rain Days and the Quiet Months

Carvoeiro puts its whole town on one cove: white houses that stop where the sand starts, stairs cut into the sandstone, a boardwalk east toward the blowholes at Algar Seco, and boats leaving the beach for the caves along the coast toward Benagil. Most of what you came for depends on two things the calendar decides: whether the water is warm enough to get into, and whether the sky holds for a week.

So the real work is picking the week to book. The year splits cleanly into a dry core from June to September, a wet quarter from October to December, and two shoulder seasons that behave nothing alike. The numbers that follow come from the Portuguese national weather service and from a marine dataset, and they settle the two questions a trip hinges on: when to come, and when the sea is worth swimming in.

Carvoeiro weather month by month: highs, lows, rain days and sea temperature

Highs climb from 61.3°F in January to 84.9°F in July and are back under 70°F by November, while the rain piles into one corner of the year: June through September together bring 1.21 inches across 3.1 days of 1 mm or more, and December alone brings 3.54 inches across 7.0.

Two months do the tipping. October reverses the summer with 2.20 inches over 6.0 rainy days against September’s 0.85 inches over 1.9, and the daytime high drops 5.6°F to 73.9°F. May turns the other way, at 3.8 rainy days against April’s 5.3 and a high of 74.3°F, a full 5.0°F above April. June then records just 0.8 days at 1 mm or more, and the tap stays shut until autumn.

December is the year’s hard month, and it is hard for one kind of traveler: the one who booked for the beach. It records 3.2 days of 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, gives 9 hours 41 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and holds the air at a 62.8°F high. Walkers, golfers and anyone here to eat their way along the coast will barely notice.

One caveat before you pack. Every figure here for air and rain is measured at the Faro station, 5 meters above sea level and east of Carvoeiro, on a coast whose western half runs cooler and windier; inland high ground is colder and far wetter. And the rain-day counts use the Portuguese service’s own thresholds, 1 mm (0.04 inch) and 10 mm (0.39 inch), which are not the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use. The two sets of counts are not interchangeable.

When is the best time to visit Carvoeiro?

September. Days average 79.5°F, nights hold at 64.9°F, the month records 0.85 inches of rain across 1.9 days at 1 mm or more, and the sea averages 65.4°F. You still get 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight on the 15th, with sunset around 7:40 pm local time, which is enough for a morning on the sand, an afternoon on the cliff path and dinner outside without a jacket.

Its neighbors both lose the comparison. August runs 5.1°F hotter by day and 2.9°F hotter at night for a sea only 1.4°F warmer, and it carries the school holidays with it. October delivers the warmest water of the year but 4.1 more rainy days than September and 1.35 more inches in the gauge, so a seven-night booking has a real chance of losing two days to weather.

For a first visit, that argues for seven nights in the first half of September, booked while August rates are still setting the tone, with the car picked up at Faro. When can you swim in Carvoeiro? Sea temperature month by month

Take 68°F as the comfort line most American swimmers use and Carvoeiro never quite crosses it. The water peaks at 67.3°F in October, sits at 66.9°F in June and 66.8°F in July and August, and holds 65.4°F in September and 65.3°F in November. It bottoms out at 60.9°F in March, with February at 61.3°F and January at 62.0°F. In practice that means six swimmable months, June through November, and a cold Atlantic the rest of the year.

Read those numbers for what they are. They come from a marine dataset averaged over 2015-2024, and each one is the mean of the DAILY MAXIMUM sea surface temperature, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average and warmer still than the water at eight in the morning. A sheltered cove in late afternoon and open water off the cliffs at dawn are two different swims inside the same monthly figure.

When is Carvoeiro quietest?

December through February, by the calendar rather than by any price list we can cite. European school holidays are done by mid-September and do not return until the turn of the year, which leaves a two-month stretch in January and February with no holiday peak in it at all. Daylight is short through the whole window: 9 hours 41 minutes on December 15, 9 hours 57 minutes on January 15.

What you get is a town at walking pace. January records 6.0 days of 1 mm or more, which leaves roughly 25 days in the month with no measurable rain and a 61.3°F high to walk them in. The cliff path east toward Algar Seco and the coast west toward Lagos belong to whoever shows up, and the 7:42 am sunrise is late enough that catching first light costs nothing.

What you give up is specific: the sea, at 61.3°F in February and 62.0°F in January, and the boat season that depends on it. Low season also thins out what is open, restaurant by restaurant, and we have no counted figure for how much, so check operators directly before you build a day around one. Nights fall to 46.9°F in January, which is jacket weather on a terrace.

Which month should you avoid in Carvoeiro?

December, if the trip is built around the water. It is the wettest month of the twelve at 3.54 inches, records 7.0 days at 1 mm or more and 3.2 days at 10 mm or more, and the sun is gone by 5:17 pm on the 15th. Against July’s 0.04 inches, that is the difference between a beach holiday and a week of rearranged plans, and a non-refundable booking carries the whole risk.

It has a defense, though. December is warmer by day than February, 62.8°F against 62.6°F, and its sea at 63.4°F runs 2.5°F above the March low of 60.9°F, so the year’s coldest water is not in the year’s darkest month. For a walking week, or a base for driving the region with a rental car, those 24 dry days out of 31 are workable.

Is the shoulder season worth it in Carvoeiro?

The shoulders are April, May and October, and each sits a long way below high summer on the thermometer. May’s 74.3°F high is 10.6°F under July’s 84.9°F. October’s 73.9°F is 10.7°F under August’s 84.6°F. April is the outlier at 69.3°F, a full 15.6°F below July, with nights at 54.3°F.

In exchange, October holds the warmest sea of the year at 67.3°F, 0.4°F above June and 0.5°F above July and August. May brings the driest shoulder at 1.03 inches over 3.8 rainy days and 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight on the 15th, only 32 minutes short of the June maximum, with sunset at 8:34 pm local. That is a summer-length day without the summer crowd.

The cost shows up in rain and in water. April records 5.3 rainy days and a sea of 63.5°F, 1.9°F cooler than September. October records 6.0 rainy days and 2.0 days at 10 mm or more, close to three times September’s 0.7, and gives 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight, 2 hours 55 minutes less than May.

So: May for a trip weighted toward walking, driving and long evenings, October for the warmest swim of the year if you accept six rainy days in the booking, April only if the dates are fixed for you. None of the three beats September, but May comes within 5.2°F of it on the daytime high and beats it outright on daylight.

The last word

Book September, and if September is impossible, book May. One more number to carry into the decision: the sea lags the air by about two months here, bottoming out at 60.9°F in March when the air has already climbed to a 66.0°F high, and peaking in October when the days are on their way down. That lag is why an April afternoon on the cliffs can feel like summer while the water still feels like February.
