Carvoeiro in September: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

September in Carvoeiro runs 5.1 degrees cooler by day than August, and the whole month turns on that one step: an average high of 79.5°F instead of 84.6°F, with 0.85 inch of rain spread across all thirty days. The cliffs, the boardwalk at Algar Seco and the boats toward the Benagil sea cave all stay in play. What changes is midday, when a clifftop path at 79.5°F becomes a walk instead of an endurance test.

The water needs a warning before the flights get booked. Sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 65.4°F in September, which is bracing rather than tropical, and nearly fifteen degrees below the air. Faro airport sits east along the same coast, so the arrival is short and the transatlantic leg is the long part. Three or four nights here fits most Algarve trips, and five if the cliff paths take hold.

September gives Carvoeiro days near 80°F, under an inch of rain and a sea at 65.4°F, which is the best balance of the three late-summer months for walking the cliffs and still getting in the water.

Think twice before: planning a swim-all-day week. At 65.4°F the Atlantic here is cold on entry, and it is cooler in September than it is in October.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, read at station 554 in Faro, a thermometer 5.0 meters above sea level and east of Carvoeiro. The western half of this coast runs cooler and windier, and inland high ground is colder and much wetter, so pack for a mountain walk on mountain data rather than on these coastal readings. Wider Algarve questions sit in the regional guide.

Carvoeiro weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days

Average low 64.9°F (18.3°C)
Monthly precipitation 0.85 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 1.9
Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more 0.7
Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) 65.4°F

These are IPMA’s 1991-2020 climate normals, measured at Faro rather than modeled from a grid cell, and the distinction matters: a reanalysis square and a real instrument can disagree by several degrees on the overnight low. September averages a high of 79.5°F and a low of 64.9°F, with 0.85 inch of rain for the month. Carvoeiro lies west of the station, on a stretch of coast that tends a touch cooler and breezier than Faro’s.

Measurable rain falls on 1.9 days in an average September, and 0.7 day reaches 10 mm (0.39 inch), so a real soaking turns up in roughly seven Septembers out of ten. Those thresholds are IPMA’s, set at 1 mm (0.04 inch), not the 0.10-inch threshold most American tables use, and the two counts cannot be laid side by side. Practically, the month buys you one wet afternoon and an argument about whether to drive somewhere with a roof.

Day and night separate by 14.6 degrees. That means a terrace at 10pm sitting near the 64.9°F low while the same terrace hit close to 80°F at four in the afternoon. One long-sleeve layer per person, something to cover bare legs after dinner, and the rest of the suitcase stays firmly summer. Our packing guide has the full list for an Atlantic-coast trip.

On September 15 the sun rises at 07:13 and sets at 19:40 local time (06:13 and 18:40 UTC), giving 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight. Boat operators work the calm early hours, so the useful shape of a day is cliffs and water before noon, shade in the middle, and a second outdoor stretch from about six o’clock until the light goes.

Can you swim in Carvoeiro in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 65.4°F in September, from the Open-Meteo marine record averaged over 2015-2024. Read the number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would give for the same water. Tables that publish a round-the-clock mean will show a slightly lower figure, and neither reading is wrong.

At 65.4°F the first thirty seconds are loud. Adults used to the northern Atlantic or the California coast adjust in a few minutes and swim comfortably for half an hour. Anyone whose reference point is the Gulf of Mexico will treat it as a plunge rather than a soak, and small children tire of it fast. A shorty wetsuit converts a five-minute swim into an afternoon, and shops in town rent them, though we could not verify 2026 rental prices.

We found no verified wind or swell series for Carvoeiro in September, so no numbers go in this paragraph. The climate record does say the western Algarve runs windier than Faro, and Carvoeiro sits between the two. When the afternoon breeze builds, the cove beaches tucked under the cliffs stay workable long after the open sand west of Lagos has given up.

How busy is Carvoeiro in September? Crowds, booking lead time and the tourist tax

September sits on the shoulder of the Algarve year by the calendar, not by any price series we could read. Portuguese and northern European school terms restart through the first half of the month, and beach numbers fall as they do. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Carvoeiro, so we crown no month cheapest and none most expensive.

Booking pressure follows those school dates more than the thermometer. Our own rule of thumb, not a measured series: six to eight weeks ahead (est.) for anything in the first fortnight, three to four weeks (est.) for the last ten days. Rental cars at Faro are the tighter item of the two in early September. Our car guide covers the tolls and the insurance, and the cost page handles the daily budget.

Several Algarve municipalities levy a per-night tourist tax on top of the room rate. We could not verify a current rate for Lagoa, the municipality Carvoeiro belongs to, so we give no percentage and no euro figure. Ask whether the quoted total includes it when you book, and expect it to be collected at the property rather than online.

The one place extra money genuinely changes this month is the car. Buses serve Portimão and Lagos, but the coves between them, and the trailheads above them, run on wheels. With sunset at 19:40 there is a full evening to use after a beach afternoon, and without a car most of it goes on waiting. Where you sleep matters less: our lodging guide sorts the Algarve bases.

Things to do in Carvoeiro in September: Algar Seco, Benagil and the Seven Hanging Valleys path

What September opens up, and August largely closes, is the middle of the day. At an average high of 84.6°F, a clifftop walk in August is a dawn errand. At 79.5°F, with 1.9 wet days in the entire month, the same walk works at eleven in the morning and again at six in the evening, which is the difference between seeing one headland and seeing four.

Algar Seco is the anchor, an eroded limestone shelf east of the town beach reached on a public stairway and boardwalk. West of town, the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos runs the clifftop toward Praia da Marinha, with Praia de Vale Centeanes as the nearest swimmable cove along it. Boats toward the Benagil sea cave leave from Praia do Carvoeiro and from Benagil.

The rock is the same in every month. The air is not, and that is what makes the season: 79.5°F in September against 84.6°F in August and 73.9°F in October, with monthly rain going 0.12 inch, 0.85 inch, 2.20 inches across the three. Water temperature barely participates in the argument at 66.8°F, 65.4°F and 67.3°F. October’s cliffs are cooler to walk and far likelier to be wet underfoot, at 6.0 rain days.

Plenty here costs nothing. The clifftop paths, the Algar Seco boardwalk, the stairways down to the coves and the town beach itself are all free to use, and so is the sunset viewpoint above the harbor. We could not verify parking charges in Carvoeiro for 2026, so leave room in the budget for the possibility. The boat trip and a meal are the only fixed outlays a good day here really demands.

Carvoeiro in September: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts with the 07:13 sunrise. Walk Algar Seco and the boardwalk by 07:45, while the stone is still cool. Take a boat toward Benagil around nine, when the sea is at its flattest and the air is well below the 79.5°F high. Back in town by half past eleven for the beach, lunch at one, shade until four. Swim at Vale Centeanes late afternoon at 65.4°F, then hold a terrace table for the 19:40 sunset.

Day two goes west by car: Lagos in the morning, Ponta da Piedade before the tour buses, lunch in the old town, and the drive back along the coast road with a cove stop of your choosing. If the weather turns, remember what the odds are: 1.9 measurable days in the month, 0.7 of them heavy. The wet-day swap is inland and indoors, either Silves or Faro’s old town, both within an easy drive.

Carvoeiro in September vs August and October

Measure August September October
Average high 84.6°F 79.5°F 73.9°F
Average low 67.8°F 64.9°F 60.4°F
Monthly precipitation 0.12 in 0.85 in 2.20 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 0.2 1.9 6.0
Sea surface (daily maxima) 66.8°F 65.4°F 67.3°F

August is 5.1 degrees hotter by day and close to bone dry, at 0.12 inch and 0.2 wet days. October drops the high to 73.9°F and multiplies September’s rainfall by about two and a half, 2.20 inches over 6.0 wet days. The sea flatly refuses to follow the air: it is warmest of the three in October at 67.3°F and coolest in September at 65.4°F, with August between them at 66.8°F. All three sit inside a two-degree band.

Shift four weeks back to August and you gain heat and near-certain dry weather, and pay for it with school-holiday company on every cove and a midday that rules out the cliff path. Shift four weeks forward to October and you gain the warmest water of the three plus emptier sand, and you accept a high of 73.9°F, evenings near 60.4°F, and roughly three times as many wet days.

Is September a good time to visit Carvoeiro?

Yes, for walkers, for couples without a school calendar, and for anyone who wants both the cliffs and the water in the same day. No, for travelers whose whole trip is built on warm sea, because 65.4°F is a swim you commit to rather than drift into. Families tied to late-August school dates will find the first week still busy and the last ten days noticeably calmer.

If the answer came out no on temperature, the honest alternative is August rather than October: 84.6°F days, 0.12 inch of rain, and only a degree and a half more warmth in the water. If the answer came out no on crowds, October is the better swap, so long as you accept 6.0 rain days and pack a jacket for evenings that average 60.4°F.

No other month puts a near-80°F day, under an inch of rain and a full 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight on the same page of the calendar.

The last word

Spread 0.85 inch of rain over 1.9 wet days and the average Carvoeiro rain day delivers about 0.45 inch, which is one grumpy afternoon rather than a ruined week. Book the car before you agonize over the room if you are coming in the first fortnight, keep the boat trip early and the swim late, and hold a table for the hour before the 19:40 sunset on the 15th. The cliffs look their best in exactly that light.
