Biscayne National Park covers 172,971.11 acres, and almost all of that is water. You reach the park by boat and you use it by boat, which puts a hull, a paddle or a seat on somebody else’s deck ahead of hiking shoes on the packing list. Fishing, diving, snorkeling and paddling all begin the same way, at a dock.
The islands inside the boundary are the northernmost Florida Keys, the same chain that continues through Key Largo and ends at Key West. What changes is the approach. This end of the chain sits about an hour from downtown Miami, where the far end is four, so Biscayne delivers Keys water without the day-long drive south.

Hours vary by season and by site within the park, and commercial operators set their own rates for trips and rentals. Check the park’s own listing for the date you plan to go, and call the operator before you count on a departure.
What is there to do at Biscayne National Park?
The Park Service’s list for Biscayne runs to fishing, boating, diving, snorkeling, paddling, hiking, camping, wildlife watching and cultural exploration, with boat tours and ranger programs on top of it. Most of those entries share one prerequisite. Camping happens out on Boca Chita and Elliott Keys, so the tent, the cooler and everybody carrying them cross open water first.
Wildlife watching sits on that list for a reason of geography. Four distinct ecosystems melt into one another inside the park, and the Park Service calls the rich edge communities where they meet ecotones. Manatees and sea turtles use those edges, along with hundreds of species of birds and fish. Pack binoculars next to the mask.
Is Biscayne part of the Florida Keys?
Yes. The keys inside the park boundary are the northernmost Florida Keys, the same chain as Key Largo and Key West. They carry the chain’s shallow, clear water, and diving and snorkeling appear on the park’s activity list because of it.
About an hour separates downtown Miami from this end of the chain; the far end, Key West, is four. A Miami trip can therefore reach the Keys and come back to the same bed, which changes how a week in south Florida gets built. The Park Service is blunt about the neighbor: Biscayne sits close to one of the nation’s largest urban areas, and the whole park is constantly adapting to pressures from both nature and people. Anglers, divers, paddlers and day boats all arrive on the same water, which is worth remembering when you choose a weekday over a Saturday.

Biscayne charges no entrance fee. The $25.00 pays for a day at the dock on Boca Chita and Elliott Keys, and only on Fridays through Mondays and federal holidays. The $35.00 pays for a night at those same keys, and it applies even when you sleep in your own boat tied up there. With a boat, a rented kayak or a booked seat on a tour, the answer is yes, and the day looks like nothing else within an hour of a major American city: shallow water, islands with no road to them, a skyline on one horizon. Arrive with none of those three and the park gives back very little, because the snorkeling, the fishing and the campsites all start offshore.
Florida’s other two national parks set the contrast. The Everglades can be done from a boardwalk on a tank of gas, and Dry Tortugas also demands a crossing, from Key West. The park also protects plants and insects found nowhere else in the United States. You will not identify them through a snorkel mask, and that is the case for the ranger programs and guided boat trips on the activity list: somebody aboard knows which ecosystem edge you are floating over, and what lives on it.
Build the day around the water and the budget stays short: nothing to enter, $25.00 to tie up between Friday and Monday, $35.00 for a night on the keys. Confirm the hours for your date first, load the cooler second, and go early while the water is flat. The northernmost Florida Keys sit an hour from downtown Miami, and almost every one of those 172,971.11 acres is water.
