FLORIDA · BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK · APRIL
Almost all of Biscayne National Park is water: a shallow bay, a chain of low keys and a reef line just south of Miami. The month you pick shapes the visit more here than at a park you walk. April is the final month of Florida’s dry season on our state calendar, and it puts the sea within half a degree of 80°F before the rains of May arrive.
You have already chosen the park, so the open question is the date. April brings warm water, rain on only a handful of days and nights that no longer call for a fleece. March runs drier and cooler, and May runs warmer and nearly twice as wet as April.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · BISCAYNE · APRIL
April gives Biscayne a 79.6°F sea (an average of daily maxima), 83.6°F afternoons on the Miami thermometer and measurable rain on about four days, a strong month for snorkeling and paddling if you book the boat before the hotel.
LAST MONTH OF THE DRY SEASON · SEA 79.6°F · TWO DAYS SUGGESTED
Go for: snorkeling and paddling in water close to 80°F, long evenings on the bay and a month that still sits inside the dry season.
Think twice before: planning midday island hikes, or assuming the Miami station reads exactly like open water: it runs on land.

Our air figures are official NOAA NCEI normals for 1991-2020, read at station USW00012839 in Miami, immediately north of the park: an average April high of 83.6°F, a low of 69.8°F and 3.36 inches of precipitation. Every figure here comes from that land thermometer. The park itself is almost all open water, and open water swings less than a city in both directions, so expect slightly softer afternoons and slightly milder dawns out on the bay.
An average April logs 4.3 days with at least 0.10 inch of rain, roughly one day in seven. For a trip of two or three days, the likeliest outcome is no rain worth planning around, and the next likeliest is a single wet spell that shifts a boat run from morning to afternoon or to the following day.
Highs and lows sit 13.8°F apart. A 69.8°F dawn on a moving boat feels cooler than the number, so pack a long-sleeve layer for early departures alongside the swimsuit, a brimmed hat and reef-safe sunscreen for the 83.6°F middle of the day.
On April 15 the sun rises at 6:55 a.m. and sets at 7:45 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, for 12 hours 50 minutes of daylight. That leaves light on the water well past a normal dinner hour, useful for a late return from the keys.
Can you swim in Biscayne National Park in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Yes. The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Biscayne at 79.6°F in April, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average and a touch above what a morning swimmer meets.
In practice, water near 80°F is comfortable for most people on a long snorkel without a wetsuit. Swimmers who chill easily tend to bring a thin shorty or rash guard. At dawn the water is also close to 10°F warmer than the average low on land (79.6°F against 69.8°F), so getting in is often easier than drying off.
We could not verify wind or wave data for April, and our marine source gave us sea temperature only, so we give no figure for chop on the bay. The National Weather Service marine forecast for Biscayne Bay, checked the evening before a boat day, is the call to make.
How busy is Biscayne National Park in April? Crowds and prices
April closes the dry season that runs from November on our Florida calendar, one month after the spring-break peak our state guide places in March. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for the park’s area, so we rank no month cheap or expensive. Our Florida trip-cost guide sets out the spending tiers.
The booking that shapes an April visit is a seat on the water, since most of the park lies beyond the shoreline. Reserve the boat trip or kayak rental before the flight, then choose a bed in Homestead or southern Miami with our where-to-stay guide. We have no lead-time data, so we put no number of weeks on it.
We could not verify the Miami-Dade lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Compare the full total on the booking screen, taxes and any resort fee included, before you commit to a room.
Spend the extra money on a boat. Without one, April’s 79.6°F sea stays a view from Convoy Point. We could not verify current tour fares or rental rates, so check the operator listed on the park’s NPS site when you book.
Things to do in Biscayne National Park in April

April pairs a sea at 79.6°F with rain on 4.3 days. May’s water is warmer at 83.0°F, but its rain days climb to 6.9. For snorkeling, paddling and island hopping in warm water with the dry season still holding, April is the month of the three.
On the mainland, the Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point is the starting place for most visits. Offshore, Boca Chita Key carries its small ornamental lighthouse, Elliott Key is the largest island and holds a trail and a campground, Stiltsville is a cluster of houses on pilings in the open bay, and the Maritime Heritage Trail links shipwreck sites underwater. We could not verify current hours, docking fees or capacity, so the our Florida national parks guide and the NPS page are the checks to run.
Between March and April the sea gains 1.2°F while the afternoon high climbs 3.0°F. The larger jump comes in May, when the water adds another 3.4°F. On the keys that means April middays already push toward 83.6°F in the open, so the Elliott Key trail belongs to the morning and the water to the afternoon.
We could not confirm entrance fees or fee-free dates for April, so we name no free day. The NPS fee page for Biscayne lists them, along with any charge for overnight docking.
Biscayne National Park in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Be at Convoy Point soon after the 6:55 a.m. sunrise, while the air still sits near its 69.8°F low. Take the morning boat to the keys or the reef and snorkel before noon. Spend the hot early afternoon at the visitor center, then paddle the mangrove shoreline in late light and stay for the 7:45 p.m. sunset over the bay.
Day two. Book a second water outing, Boca Chita Key or a Stiltsville trip, for the morning. If the weather turns, slide it to the afternoon or the next day and use the gap on land: the Anhinga Trail in the Everglades or a Miami afternoon from our Miami guide. A longer trip south fits our seven-day Florida itinerary.
Biscayne National Park in April vs March and May
| Normal | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.6°F | 83.6°F | 86.7°F |
| Average low | 65.6°F | 69.8°F | 73.4°F |
| Precipitation | 2.46 in | 3.36 in | 6.32 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.5 | 4.3 | 6.9 |
| Sea surface (daily max, Open-Meteo 2015-2024) | 78.4°F | 79.6°F | 83.0°F |
Across the three months the NOAA station climbs from an 80.6°F high in March to 83.6°F in April and 86.7°F in May, and the lows rise from 65.6°F to 69.8°F to 73.4°F. Rain moves from 2.46 inches to 3.36 and then jumps to 6.32 in May, with rain days going from 3.5 to 4.3 to 6.9. On the Open-Meteo marine series, the sea reads 78.4°F, 79.6°F and 83.0°F.
Moving four weeks earlier to Biscayne in March gains you nearly an inch less rain and nights 4.2°F cooler, and costs you 1.2°F of sea plus the spring-break crowds. Moving to May gains 3.4°F of water and warmer evenings, at the price of almost twice April’s rain, still before the June 1 start of hurricane season on our Florida calendar.
Is April a good time to visit Biscayne National Park?
For snorkelers, paddlers and anyone chartering a boat, yes: the water is close to 80°F and the dry season still holds. Travelers after the driest, coolest days should look elsewhere, since March recorded 2.46 inches of rain against April’s 3.36 and afternoons 3.0°F cooler.
If April does not fit, choose March for cooler trail mornings and less rain, or May if the warmest water matters more than dry skies. Families timing a school break can weigh both with our Florida with kids guide.
Of the three months, April is the one that pairs a sea within half a degree of 80°F with fewer than five days of measurable rain.
The last word
Book the boat first and let the rest of the trip follow it. Then keep one flexible morning in your two days: an average April brings 1.3 days with an inch of rain or more, enough to cancel a crossing to Boca Chita Key. That spare morning is what lets the water at 79.6°F, about 26.4°C, stay on the schedule.
