THE ALGARVE · SEPTEMBER · THE MONTH GUIDE
Faro’s average high in September is 79.5°F, five degrees under August’s 84.6°F, and the sea off the coast reads 65.4°F. Lifeguards stay on duty through September 30 at the listed beaches of Lagos, Tavira, Faro and six more councils. Albufeira keeps its 25 listed beaches supervised until October 15, two weeks after everyone else stands down.
Most Algarve trips from the US start with a flight into Faro (our US flights guide covers routes and connections), so the choice left is the date. Would four weeks earlier or later serve your vacation better? The towns, the beaches and where to base yourself are in our Algarve guide. Here we set September against August and October, figure by figure, and leave the year-round picture to the best time to visit Portugal.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · THE ALGARVE · SEPTEMBER
September gives you Faro highs near 80°F, fewer than two rain days on average and lifeguards on every listed council beach until the 30th, a strong month for a beach-and-cliffs trip.
FARO HIGH 79.5°F · SEA 65.4°F · LIFEGUARDS TO SEPT 30 · ALBUFEIRA TO OCT 15
Go for: beach days with lifeguards still posted, cliff walks at highs five degrees under August, sunsets at 7:40 p.m. and a toll-free coastal motorway.
Think twice before: planning to paddle into the Benagil cave on your own. Unguided kayak rentals stopped in July 2025, and swimming in is banned.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 554 at Faro, 5 meters above sea level, at the eastern end of a coast about 150 km (93 miles) long. Lagos and Sagres at the far end keep their own weather, and the hills inland run colder and far wetter. Read the normals below as a coastal Faro reading and check a local forecast before any hill walk.
Algarve weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days

| Daylight on Sept 15 | 12 h 27 min |
| Sunrise / sunset on Sept 15 (Lisbon time) | 7:13 a.m. / 7:40 p.m. |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima, 2015–2024) | 65.4°F |
IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, publishes 1991–2020 normals from a real thermometer at its Faro station: an average high of 79.5°F, an average low of 64.9°F and 0.85 inch of rain across the month. A station normal is a measurement at one point. A reanalysis such as ERA5 smooths a whole grid cell of map, and the two can differ by several degrees, so we use the station figure.
Rain reaches 1 mm (0.04 inch) on 1.9 days in an average September, roughly one day in sixteen, and only 0.7 day brings 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds. US tables count rain days from 0.10 inch, so do not set these counts against an American city’s. Keep one indoor plan in reserve for a week-long trip and the average is covered.
Between the afternoon high and the early-morning low, Faro swings 14.6°F. A light sweater or long-sleeved shirt belongs in the day bag for dinner on a terrace, alongside sunscreen for the 79.5°F afternoons. Our Portugal packing list covers the rest of the suitcase.
On September 15 the sun rises at 7:13 a.m. and sets at 7:40 p.m. Lisbon time, 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight. Plan sunset viewpoints for about 7:30 p.m. and dinner after dark.
Can you swim in the Algarve in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine model puts the sea surface off the Algarve at 65.4°F in September, averaged over 2015–2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above what a 24-hour average would give.
Water at 65.4°F sits 14.1°F below Faro’s average afternoon high, and a first plunge feels brisk on warm skin. Short swims and a towel within reach suit most adults, and children tend to tire faster in cool water. Choose a listed beach with a lifeguard post: across Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, posts are staffed to September 30.
Our sources carry no wind or swell series for September, so we give no figure for either. On the day, the lifeguard’s flag is the reading that settles whether you go in.
How busy is the Algarve in September? Crowds and prices
September falls between the August peak and the October shoulder on the calendar, and the lifeguard season still runs until the 30th. We found no occupancy or hotel-rate series for the month, so we rank no month cheapest or dearest. Our Portugal trip-cost guide prices a day at three levels.
Reserve a refundable room and the rental car as soon as your flights are set, roughly six to eight weeks ahead. A car keeps the whole coast within reach, and our car-rental guide covers insurance and pickup at Faro airport.
We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for any Algarve council, so we give no amount. Ask your hotel at booking whether a local fee is added at checkout, and how it is charged.
A licensed guided kayak or paddleboard tour into the Benagil cave is the one expense that changes the month. Unguided rentals ended in July 2025, swimming in is banned, and a motorboat gets two minutes inside against up to eight for a guided paddle group. We have no tour price to quote. Details are in our Benagil guide.
Things to do in the Algarve in September

Lifeguard cover and a cooler Faro high overlap in September. The order dated April 30, 2026 keeps posts staffed to the 30th in nine councils, and from October 1 only Albufeira keeps them, which makes any other swim that month an unsupervised one. At an average high of 79.5°F, the midday stretch around the Ponta da Piedade headland near Lagos is easier going than in August.
At Benagil, the maritime authority’s Edital 019/2024 bans swimming into the cave and landing on its beach. Motorboats keep 15 meters off the arches and enter by the western one, while kayaks and paddleboards use the eastern arch. The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., last entry 5 p.m., and one ticket covers the fortress and promontory. Ask at the gate for the full adult price. In Albufeira, 25 listed beaches keep lifeguards to October 15.
Faro’s sea barely moves across these months, from 66.8°F in August to 65.4°F in September. The air drops faster, by 5.1°F. The gap between afternoon air and water shrinks from 17.8°F in August to 14.1°F in September, then to 6.6°F in October. The single listed beach in Castro Marim has already closed its season on August 31.
Driving the coast costs nothing in tolls. Infraestruturas de Portugal keeps the A22, the Via do Infante, at a zero rate under Lei n.º 37/2024, though zero tolls are not a general rule for Portuguese motorways. At Sagres, free entry on Sundays and public holidays until 2 p.m. applies only to residents of Portugal, so visitors pay.
The Algarve in September: a two-day itinerary
Begin day one on the Lagoa coast soon after the 7:13 a.m. sunrise, with a licensed guided kayak or paddleboard tour into Benagil booked ahead. Your group gets up to eight minutes inside the cave. Spend the warm middle of the day on a listed Lagoa beach near Carvoeiro, lifeguarded to September 30. Late afternoon, drive west to Lagos and walk out to Ponta da Piedade before sunset at 7:40 p.m., carrying a layer for the 64.9°F average low.
Day two runs west on the toll-free A22 to Sagres for the fortress opening at 9:30 a.m. An afternoon on a Lagos beach follows, with lifeguards on duty through the 30th. If one of the 1.9 average rain days lands, trade the beach for the old centers of Faro or Tavira. If the operator cancels the kayak tour on day one, move it to the second morning and see Sagres first. Our getting-around guide covers the coast without a car.

From August to September, Faro’s average high falls 5.1°F and the low 2.9°F, and from September to October the high falls another 5.6°F. Rain climbs from 0.12 inch on 0.2 day to 0.85 inch on 1.9 days, then to 2.20 inches on 6.0 days in October. The sea runs the other way from the air: 66.8°F, 65.4°F, then 67.3°F in October, as the Open-Meteo model reads it.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain 5.1°F of afternoon heat, near-dry skies and water 1.4°F warmer. Shift four weeks later and the sea is 1.9°F warmer, but you take on 6.0 rain days, highs of 73.9°F and lifeguards in Albufeira alone. Month details are in our August and October guides.
Is September a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for a beach-and-walking trip of five to seven nights (est.) with swims at lifeguarded beaches and cliff walks in 79.5°F afternoons. It suits families less well in the last days of the month, when posts outside Albufeira close on the 30th. Anyone set on paddling into Benagil alone should know that option ended in July 2025.
August fits travelers who want the most heat, with an 84.6°F average high and 0.2 rain day. October fits swimmers who value the warmest water of the three, 67.3°F, and can base themselves in Albufeira for supervised beaches.
Among August, September and October, only September pairs Faro highs under 80°F with lifeguards on every listed council’s beaches.
The last word
Choose the beach before the hotel. The same lifeguard order names which Algarve beaches count as bathing beaches, and any beach missing from it had no assured cover on the day it was published. A listed beach near Lagos or Albufeira beats a pretty, empty cove in late September. Portugal’s national environment agency publishes water-quality results through the season, so look up your beach before the trip.
