THE ALGARVE · JUNE · FARO STATION 554
June 1 is the date to circle. That morning the 2026 lifeguard season opens on the listed beaches of Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, joining Albufeira, whose 25 listed beaches have been staffed since May 15. The weather cooperates: the Faro station averages an 80.2°F high and under one day of measurable rain in June, and the sun stays up until almost 9 p.m.
Sea surface off the coast averages 66.9°F in June, and July’s 66.8°F is no warmer, so waiting four weeks buys hotter afternoons rather than a gentler swim. Most trips start with a flight into Faro, and our guide to flying from the US lays out the routes. The case for each neighboring month sits in our Algarve in May and Algarve in July guides.

THE ALGARVE · JUNE AT A GLANCE
June brings lifeguards to nearly every council’s beaches, an 80.2°F average high at Faro and almost no rain, with a 66.9°F sea as the one cool note.
IPMA FARO NORMALS 1991-2020 · LIFEGUARDS FROM JUNE 1 · SUNSET 8:54 P.M.
Go for: long lifeguarded beach days, light until 8:54 p.m., and a guided paddle into the Benagil sea cave.
Think twice before: counting on warm water (66.9°F, and July is no warmer) or packing for hill trails on Faro’s coastal figures.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 554 at Faro, 5 meters above sea level, at the eastern end of a coast that runs about 150 km (93 miles). Read it as the figure for the beaches around Faro. High ground inland is colder and far wetter, the western end of the coast keeps its own weather, and a hiker bound for the hills should check a forecast for the trail itself.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, publishes the 1991-2020 normals for Faro: an average June high of 80.2°F, an average low of 64.0°F and 0.20 inch of precipitation for the month. They come from a real thermometer at the station, not from a reanalysis grid cell, and the May and July figures further down come from the same station over the same thirty years, so the three months compare like for like.
An average June at Faro brings 0.8 day with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) of rain and 0.2 day with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. In plain terms, a proper soaking turns up about one June in five, and a beach day rarely needs a backup plan. IPMA counts from 1 mm, not from the 0.10-inch cutoff American tables use, so these day counts do not line up with a US rain-day figure.
Afternoons and nights sit 16.2°F apart, from the 80.2°F high down to 64.0°F after dark. Pack for both: shorts, a hat and high-factor sunscreen for the day, a light sweater or long sleeves for an outdoor dinner, and warmer layers for anyone heading onto high ground, where the Faro figures stop applying.
On June 15 the Algarve gets about 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:10 a.m. and sets at 8:54 p.m. Lisbon time (05:10 and 19:54 UTC). A swim started at 7 p.m. still has close to two hours of sun, and a table booked for 8:30 p.m. sits in daylight.
Algarve sea temperature in June: can you swim?
The Open-Meteo Marine API puts sea surface off the Algarve at 66.9°F in June, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a 24-hour mean. Water tables that average around the clock will quote a slightly lower June number, and 66.9°F is best read as the top of the day, not the early-morning temperature.
In practice 66.9°F is cool water, 3.5°F above May’s 63.4°F: bracing on the first plunge, comfortable for most adults once they start swimming. Who is watching matters as much as the degrees. June is the first month when lifeguards cover the listed beaches of every council except one beach in Castro Marim, which waits until July 1. In May only Albufeira had them. Water-quality results for the season are published by Portugal’s national environment agency.
We found no June wind or wave series we could verify, so we give no figure and promise no flat water. On the day, follow the lifeguard’s flag at a listed beach, and stay out when it flies red, whatever the thermometer says.
How busy is the Algarve in June? Crowds and prices
June opens the summer calendar on the coast: the bathing season starts on the 1st in nine councils, and Albufeira has been in season since mid-May. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel rates, so we crown no month expensive and no month cheap. Budget tiers and daily costs for the whole country live in our Portugal trip-cost guide.
We could not verify booking lead times either, so we give no count of weeks. Our editorial advice: once your dates are fixed, reserve the room and the car together on free cancellation, and add the Benagil tour early, because the maritime authority caps how many craft may be inside the cave at once. Pickup points and insurance are covered in our car rental guide.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the Algarve councils, so we give no amount. Ask your hotel at booking whether a per-night charge applies and whether it is collected on arrival.
Pay for a licensed guide if Benagil is on your list. Renting a kayak to go into the cave alone has been off the table since July 2025, and a guided paddle group may stay up to eight minutes inside, against two for a motorized boat. We have no verified tour price, so compare each operator’s stated time in the cave along with the fare.
Things to do in the Algarve in June

From June 1, nine councils join Albufeira with lifeguards on their listed beaches: Aljezur and Vila do Bispo in the west, Lagos, Lagoa, Silves, Loulé and Faro in the middle, Olhão and Tavira to the east, all through September 30 under the 2026 order. In May, a swim outside Albufeira is an unsupervised swim. With sunset at 8:54 p.m., a beach afternoon can stretch into the evening almost anywhere along that line.
At Benagil, the maritime authority bans swimming into the cave from the beach or from a boat, float or no float, and no boat or kayak may land on the beach inside. Motorized boats keep 15 meters off the arches and enter by the western arch, paddle craft use the eastern one. West at Sagres, the Fortaleza opens 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., last entry at 5 p.m., on one ticket for the fortress and the promontory. Ask at the gate for the full adult price.
The fortress keeps its 5:30 p.m. closing in June while the sun sets at 8:54 p.m., leaving 3 hours 24 minutes of daylight after the gates shut. Put Sagres in the morning and keep the long evening for a beach. The sea has gained 3.5°F since May, and the lifeguards absent from Lagoa’s beaches in May, Benagil’s council among them, are on duty now.
The A22, the Via do Infante along the length of the Algarve, costs nothing to drive: Infraestruturas de Portugal keeps its toll rates at zero under Lei n.º 37/2024. That zero rate covers a handful of named roads and is not a rule for Portuguese motorways in general. The Sagres fortress goes free on Sundays and public holidays until 2 p.m., but only for residents of Portugal, so visitors pay on those mornings too.
The Algarve in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs west. Be at the Fortaleza de Sagres for its 9:30 a.m. opening, before the afternoon climbs toward the 80.2°F average high, and walk the promontory on the same ticket. Lunch in Sagres, then swim at a listed Vila do Bispo beach, lifeguarded from June 1. Late in the afternoon, drive east to Lagos, walk the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade in the evening light, and sit down to dinner around the 8:54 p.m. sunset.
Day two moves to the central coast on the toll-free A22. Book the earliest guided kayak or paddleboard slot into Benagil, where your group gets up to eight minutes inside, then swim at a listed beach around Carvoeiro and finish in Albufeira, whose beaches keep lifeguards until October 15. If the sea turns rough and the operator cancels, give the morning to Faro and its old town instead, and rebook the cave for the next calm day.
The Algarve in June vs May and July
| Faro normals | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.3°F | 80.2°F | 84.9°F |
| Average low | 59.0°F | 64.0°F | 67.3°F |
| Precipitation | 1.03 inches | 0.20 inch | 0.04 inch |
| Days with 1 mm or more | 3.8 | 0.8 | 0.2 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 63.4°F | 66.9°F | 66.8°F |
| Lifeguards | Albufeira only, from May 15 | Nine more councils from June 1 | Last Castro Marim beach from July 1 |
Average highs at Faro go from 74.3°F in May to 80.2°F in June and 84.9°F in July, gains of 5.9°F and then 4.7°F, while lows rise from 59.0°F to 64.0°F to 67.3°F. Precipitation falls from 1.03 inches to 0.20 and then 0.04, and days with 1 mm or more drop from 3.8 to 0.8 to 0.2. The sea moves only once: 63.4°F in May, 66.9°F in June and 66.8°F in July.
Moving to May gains cooler afternoons, 74.3°F on average, but costs 3.5°F of sea, brings rain on about one day in eight and leaves Albufeira as the only council with lifeguards. Moving to July adds 4.7°F to the afternoon high for a sea that is no warmer, and brings the last beach into season, the one in Castro Marim on July 1. Our May and July guides carry each month in full.
Is June a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for swimmers and families who want lifeguards at a named beach, long evenings and afternoons near 80°F instead of July’s 84.9°F. No, for anyone hoping for warm water, because 66.9°F is as warm as the sea gets from May through July in our 2015-2024 data, and no for hikers heading onto high ground, where the coastal normals no longer apply.
If the answer is no, pick May for walking: highs of 74.3°F and lows of 59.0°F suit long days on foot, and Albufeira covers swimmers from May 15. Expect 3.8 rain days and a 63.4°F sea. The calendar for the rest of the country sits in our best time to visit Portugal guide.
Of May, June and July, June alone pairs lifeguards on nearly every council’s listed beaches with an average Faro high under 81°F and the longest days of the year.
The last word
Choose your beach before your hotel. Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1 lists the bathing beaches by name, and a beach missing from that list had no assured lifeguard cover on the day it was published, however perfect the sand looks from the clifftop. Sleep near a listed beach, reserve the Benagil guide early, and book dinner for after the 8:54 p.m. sunset.
