The Algarve in February: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Sagres Hours

The Algarve in February gives you afternoons of 62.6°F at Faro, a sea at 61.3°F and fewer wet days than either January or March. Pack a sweater for the 47.8°F mornings and the coast opens up for walking, driving and cliff-watching, with the sun up from 07:19 to 18:12 by mid-month.

What February holds back is the beach day in the summer sense. Under the 2026 bathing order, no council on the coast had lifeguards before May 15, and the Benagil sea cave is closed to swimmers in every month of the year. Shift your trip four weeks later to March and the afternoons gain 3.4°F while the sea loses 0.4°F.

February suits walkers, drivers and sightseers who want 62.6°F afternoons at Faro, though swimmers should wait: the sea sits at 61.3°F and no beach has lifeguards.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA’s station 554 at Faro, about 16 feet above the sea, averaged over 1991 to 2020. Faro sits at the eastern end of a coast roughly 93 miles (150 km) long. Sagres and the west keep their own weather, and the high ground inland runs colder and far wetter. Read the normals below as Faro’s, and pack warmer and drier gear for a hill trail.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, puts February at Faro at an average high of 62.6°F and an average low of 47.8°F, with 1.65 inches of precipitation across the month. These are official station normals from a real thermometer at 5 m, as opposed to a reanalysis value smoothed across a model’s grid cell.

Rain of at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) falls on 5.4 days in an average February, so roughly one day in five brings a wet pavement. Only 1.4 days reach 10 mm (0.39 inch), the kind of rain that sends a coastal walk indoors. IPMA counts from 1 mm while US tables start at 0.10 inch, so these tallies won’t match an American forecast’s rain-day count. With one or two soakers a month, a week-long stay often passes without meeting one.

From the 47.8°F low to the 62.6°F high is a 14.8°F swing. Breakfast outside at 8 a.m. and a clifftop at 2 p.m. call for different clothes, so dress in layers: a fleece or light down jacket for mornings and evenings, a rain shell for the wet days and a T-shirt underneath for the afternoon. Our Portugal packing list covers shoes and the rest.

On February 15 the Algarve gets about 10 hours 53 minutes of daylight. Portugal runs on UTC in winter, so sunrise comes at 07:19 and sunset at 18:12 local time. Aim to finish outdoor stops by 18:00 and plan dinner for after dark.

Algarve sea temperature in February: can you swim?

Open-Meteo’s marine data put the sea surface off the Algarve at 61.3°F in February, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That number is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. A table quoting a slightly lower February sea is likely measuring the whole day.

At 61.3°F the water is cooler than the 62.6°F afternoon air and far warmer than the 47.8°F dawn. A short dip after a walk suits the hardy, and a wetsuit makes longer swims realistic. Any swim is unsupervised: the 2026 order started the earliest lifeguard season on May 15 in Albufeira and on June 1 in Lagos, Faro, Tavira and the other councils. Swim where others are around and stay within your depth.

We found no wind or swell series for February, so we give no wave heights. Check the sea state each morning and ask your kayak operator before a Benagil tour. The cave’s swimming ban holds whatever the swell.

How busy is the Algarve in February? Crowds and prices

February falls in the Algarve’s low season, a matter of the calendar. We found no monthly room-rate or occupancy series for the coast, so we crown no month the cheapest and put no percentage on the crowds.

Without occupancy data we can’t give you a booking lead time in weeks. Book a flexible or refundable rate so a wet forecast can move your nights, and plan to fly into Faro using the routes in our US flights guide. Daily budgets live in our Portugal trip-cost guide.

We could not verify the lodging-tax rate for the Algarve’s councils, so we give no figure. Ask your hotel when you book whether any local tax is added per night.

Put the extra money into a rental car. The A22, the Via do Infante that runs the length of the coast, has its tolls set at zero under Lei n.º 37/2024, so driving from Sagres toward Tavira costs fuel and the rental alone. The zero rate is specific to the A22, A24, A25, the Marão tunnel and parts of the A28 and A23. With under 11 hours of daylight, a car lets you pair Sagres and Lagos in one day. Our car rental guide covers insurance and pickup.

Things to do in the Algarve in February

February is the driest of its three-month stretch at Faro: 1.65 inches over 5.4 wet days, against 6.0 in January and 5.6 in March. That makes it the best of the three for long cliff walks such as Ponta da Piedade near Lagos, done at midday in 62.6°F.

The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 09:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00, and one ticket covers the fortress and the promontory. We could not read the full adult price at source, so ask at the gate. At Benagil, only guided kayak and paddleboard tours go into the sea cave, capped in numbers and staying up to eight minutes. Swimming in and landing on the inner beach are banned, and solo kayak rental ended in July 2025.

February shifts the clock more than the rules. The fortress gate shuts at 17:30, 42 minutes before the 18:12 sunset, so schedule Sagres for late morning or early afternoon. At Benagil, motorized boats keep 15 meters off the arches and stay two minutes, entering by the western arch while paddlers use the eastern one. The swim ban leaves the 61.3°F water out of the equation.

Sagres is free on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00, but only for residents of Portugal. Visitors pay on every day. The A22 costs nothing to drive, and the beaches themselves are open to walk in any month.

The Algarve in February: a two-day itinerary

Day one, Lagos and Sagres. Start at Ponta da Piedade after the 07:19 sunrise, when the low light hits the cliffs. Drive west to Sagres for the fortress, which opens at 09:30, and walk the promontory before lunch while the air climbs toward 62.6°F. Eat in Sagres, then aim to leave before the 17:30 close so the drive back to Lagos uses the last daylight before 18:12.

Day two, Benagil or the east. Take the toll-free A22 to Benagil for a morning guided kayak or paddleboard tour, with up to eight minutes inside the cave. If one of February’s 1.4 heavy-rain days rolls in, sea tours may not run: confirm with your operator the night before. Switch to Faro and Tavira along the same road, both towns you can walk between showers.

The Algarve in February vs January and March

Faro normals January February March
Average high 61.3°F 62.6°F 66.0°F
Average low 46.9°F 47.8°F 51.4°F
Precipitation 1.94 in 1.65 in 1.84 in
Days with 1 mm or more 6.0 5.4 5.6
Sea surface (daily maxima) 62.0°F 61.3°F 60.9°F

February brings the least rain of the three months: 1.65 inches over 5.4 wet days, against 1.94 inches over 6.0 in January and 1.84 over 5.6 in March. Afternoons climb from 61.3°F to 62.6°F to 66.0°F, and nights from 46.9°F to 47.8°F to 51.4°F. The sea runs the other way, easing from 62.0°F to 61.3°F to 60.9°F.

Wait four weeks for March and you gain 3.4°F in the afternoon and 3.6°F at night, paying for it with 0.19 inch more rain, 0.2 more wet days and a sea 0.4°F cooler. Go four weeks earlier and January gives up 1.3°F of afternoon warmth and adds 0.29 inch of rain, in exchange for water 0.7°F warmer.

Is February a good time to visit the Algarve?

Yes, for walkers, drivers and sightseers: dry weather by the standards of winter, 62.6°F afternoons and room to see Sagres and Benagil in cool air. No, if the trip is built around swimming, with a 61.3°F sea and no lifeguarded beach anywhere on the coast.

If swimming decides it, look past March to late spring. In 2026, Albufeira was the first council with lifeguards, from May 15, with Lagos, Faro, Tavira and the rest following on June 1. Our Portugal best-time guide weighs the full year.

Among the three months, February pairs the fewest wet days with a sea still warmer than March’s, 61.3°F against 60.9°F.

The last word

Choose February for the cliffs and the open road, and keep a swimsuit for the brave. The month hands you the Sagres promontory at 62.6°F and a free A22 to cross the coast in an afternoon. When the sea finally calls in earnest, in 2026 Albufeira was the first council to post lifeguards, from May 15 across its 25 listed beaches.
