Alentejo in June: 86°F Afternoons, 1.7 Rain Days and How It Compares to May and July

By June the Alentejo has finished changing color. The wheat is gold, the cork oaks stand in their own shade, and the plain between Évora and the Guadiana takes the sun full in the face at 86.4°F most afternoons. Rain has all but left: 0.42 inches for the whole month, spread over fewer than two days. Evenings run long, with the sun still up at 20:30.

What the month asks in return is a schedule. Dawn arrives at 56.8°F, cool enough for a sweater in a courtyard, and by two in the afternoon the plain sends you indoors or into water. Below are the normals, the comparison with May and July, a two-day itinerary built around the light, and a plain accounting of what we could not verify, starting with anything to do with prices.

Go for: dry walking weather in Évora and Monsaraz, dinners that start in daylight, and nights that fall back to 56.8°F after the heat of the day.

Think twice before: booking midday hikes, a car without working air conditioning, or a room with no shade: afternoons average 86.4°F.

Every figure here comes from one place: IPMA’s station 558 at Évora, a real thermometer at 812 feet in the middle of the region rather than a coastal stand-in or a model grid cell. The Alentejo is large and it is not uniform. Higher ground runs cooler and a good deal wetter, and the Atlantic strip near Vila Nova de Milfontes and Comporta keeps weather of its own. Read the normals as Évora and the plains around it, and pack a layer if your trip climbs.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, puts the June average high at Évora at 86.4°F (30.2°C) and the average low at 56.8°F (13.8°C), on the 1991-2020 series. Total rainfall for the month averages 0.42 inches. Those are instrument readings from a station sitting in the Alentejo itself, not a regional model, and the distinction is worth keeping in mind when a forecast app shows you something two degrees off.

Measurable rain falls on 1.7 June days, roughly one day in eighteen. The threshold is IPMA’s own, 1 mm or 0.04 inch, and it is not the 0.10-inch line American tables use, so the two counts should never be set side by side. A wet June day here usually means a gray hour, not a lost afternoon. Pack a light shell for one morning rather than for the week.

The gap between the two normals is the number that catches visitors out: 29.6°F between the average dawn and the average afternoon. You will want short sleeves at two o’clock and something with sleeves at seven in the morning and again after ten at night, especially on a terrace. Our packing guide has the full list; for June, the additions are a hat, a refillable bottle and one warm layer you will resent carrying until you need it.

Light is the month’s real gift. On June 15 the sun rises at 06:05 and sets at 20:59 local time, 14 hours 54 minutes apart, converted from the UTC times published by sunrise-sunset.org. Dinner at eight happens in full daylight, a castle wall at half past eight is still warm, and the drive home afterward needs no headlights for a while yet.

How warm is Alentejo in June?

Afternoons average 86.4°F and the same day begins at 56.8°F, a swing of 29.6 degrees between the coolest and hottest hours. That spread is what inland dry air does at 812 feet: the heat has nothing to hold it after sunset, and the night gives most of it back. Coastal Alentejo behaves differently, with a smaller swing and the ocean breeze as the deciding factor.

In practice you dress twice. Coffee at eight in a Évora square wants a light sweater over the shirt. By eleven the sweater is in the bag, the hat is out, and the shaded side of the street becomes a navigational choice. From six in the evening the temperature drops back through the seventies, which is when the terraces fill and the walking gets pleasant again for a solid three hours of daylight.

Frost is not a June problem here. The monthly average low sits 25 degrees above freezing, and we could not obtain the daily minimum series for the station, so we give no count of cold nights and no record low. The coldest thing you are likely to meet in a June night in the Alentejo is the stone floor of a church interior at nine in the morning.

How busy is Alentejo in June? Crowds, prices and booking ahead

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the Alentejo, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive, and we will not tell you June is a bargain. What we can date is the weather, and June’s is the first fully dry month of the year at Évora. For budget orders of magnitude across the country, our trip cost guide and the 12-month verdict carry what we have.

We could not verify booking lead times for the region either, so no number of weeks appears in our advice. The rule we can defend comes straight from the thermometer: with afternoons at 86.4°F, filter your rooms for air conditioning, a pool or a shaded courtyard before you filter for price, then read the cancellation line. If you are driving down from Lisbon, our car guide and where to stay cover the rest of the logistics.

On the tourist tax, we could not verify a rate for Alentejo municipalities, so we quote no per-night figure and no exemptions. Where a Portuguese town levies one, it is settled at the property rather than in the online total, so the useful move is a single question at check-in: is there a municipal charge, and has the booking already covered it?

One upgrade genuinely changes the month, and it is not the restaurant. Paying for a bed inside Évora’s walls, or for a house with a pool on the plain, converts the hottest six hours of the day from something to endure into something to enjoy. Everything else, the wine, the dinners, the fuel for the drive east, buys you roughly what it buys you in April.

Things to do in Alentejo in June: Évora, Monsaraz and the coast

June opens a shape of day that neither neighbor offers. With 14 hours 54 minutes of light on the 15th and only 1.7 wet days in the average month, you can put a full morning and a full evening outdoors and lose nothing to weather. May carries 6.0 wet days and 1.83 inches, enough to reroute a picnic. July pushes the afternoon high to 91.9°F, which shortens the walking hours at the other end of the day.

The fixed points are easy to name. Évora holds a Roman temple, a fortress of a cathedral you can climb, the bone chapel and a walled center small enough to cross on foot. Monsaraz is a white hilltop village above the Alqueva reservoir, an hour or so east by car. The coast at Vila Nova de Milfontes and Comporta trades cork oaks for dunes. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of the monuments, so check each operator before you set the day.

June changes the air around these places, not the places themselves. The same walk through Évora’s lanes is a pleasure at nine in the morning and a slog at three in the afternoon, and the reservoir shore that feels exposed in April is exactly where you want to be at seven in the evening. On the water: we could not verify a sea-surface temperature series for the Alentejo coast, so we publish no figure. Where you do find one, check its definition, because most published sea numbers are averages of daily maxima and run a little warmer than a 24-hour mean.

We could not verify any free-admission day at Évora’s monuments for June, so we promise none. What costs nothing regardless: the walled streets and their squares, the view down over the plain from the Monsaraz ridge, every public beach on the coast, and the extra hours of daylight, which is the one thing June gives away that January cannot.

Alentejo in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one belongs to Évora, timed against the heat. Coffee at 08:00 while the air is still in the sixties, the temple and the cathedral before 11:00, the bone chapel and the museums while the sun climbs. Lunch long and indoors from 13:00, because the plain is at its 86.4°F peak outside. Move east at 17:00, reach Monsaraz by 18:30, and take the ridge when the stone turns orange. Sunset is 20:59 in mid-June, so dinner starts in daylight.

Day two runs to the Atlantic: leave by 08:30, swim and walk the dunes before noon, eat fish on the coast, then drive back inland through the cork oaks in the late light. If one of the month’s 1.7 wet days lands on you, invert it. Museums, the cathedral interior, a cellar visit and the drive itself all work in gray weather, and the rain in this part of Portugal rarely outlasts a long lunch. Getting between the two days is a car job, as our transport guide explains.

Alentejo in June vs May and July

Measure May June July
Average high 77.0°F 86.4°F 91.9°F
Average low 51.6°F 56.8°F 60.1°F
Monthly rainfall 1.83 in 0.42 in 0.11 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 6.0 1.7 0.6
Sea temperature No verified series No verified series No verified series

Set against May, June runs 9.4°F warmer by day and 5.2°F warmer at night, and it cuts the rain from 1.83 inches over 6.0 wet days down to 0.42 inches over 1.7. Set against July, it gives up 5.5°F of afternoon heat and takes on about one extra wet day. All four figures come from the same IPMA station and the same 1991-2020 period, so the comparison is like for like. We have no verified water temperature for any of the three.

Shift four weeks earlier and you buy cooler walking, greener fields and a real chance of a wet morning: May loses rain on one day in five. Shift four weeks later and you buy the driest month on the record, at the cost of afternoons near 92°F and nights that no longer drop below 60°F, which is the difference between sleeping with the windows open and needing the air conditioning on.

Is June a good time to visit Alentejo?

Yes, for anyone willing to start early and stop at midday. Walkers, drivers, wine visitors and photographers get 14 hours 54 minutes of usable light and a near-guarantee of dry weather. It is a harder month for travelers who wilt above 85°F, for families tied to a midday nap in a room with no cooling, and for anyone whose plan is a long hike between noon and four on an unshaded plain.

If that describes you, take May instead. At 77.0°F by day it is nine degrees kinder, the plain is still green, and the price is 1.83 inches of rain across six days, which reads worse on paper than it feels on the ground. Anyone who wants heat but not humidity, and who books a pool, will be better served by June than by July’s 91.9°F.

The thing no other month matches: June holds the solstice, so its evenings run as long as the Alentejo’s ever get, and by then the rain has already dropped to 0.42 inches.

The last word

Book the room that opens to the night air, not the one with the view, and let 56.8°F do the cooling for free. Then make the one decision that matters in June: be at the walls of Évora by eight in the morning and back under a roof by one. Heavy rain is close to a non-event here, with 0.3 days of 0.39 inch or more in an average June, which works out to a real soaking roughly one year in three. Plan the whole trip as though the sky will hold, and keep one shell in the trunk in case it does not.
