The South Coast in September: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares to August and October

September puts the South Coast at an average high of 87.9°F and an average low of 78.5°F, with 4.16 inches of rain spread across 10.5 wet days and a sea surface reading of 87.9°F. That is the month in one line: hot, humid, swimmable from dawn, and wet often enough that one day in three needs a second idea.

What it takes away is the dry run of August, which sees 2.81 inches and 8.0 wet days. What it hands back is water: the sea is warmer in September than in either neighboring month. Storm risk belongs to its own page, and our hurricane season guide dates it month by month.

September gives this coast its warmest sea of the late summer, 87.9°F, in exchange for rain on about one day in three, so book a rate you can move and take the water day first.

The coast itself, beach by beach, sits in our South Coast guide, and the twelve-month view of the whole island is in best time to visit Jamaica. Everything below is dated: what September measures, what it changes, and whether four weeks either way would suit you better.

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 17.88° N, 77.76° W, which sits over Treasure Beach in Saint Elizabeth. That is a model estimate for a square of coast, not a thermometer at an airport, and it matters that Saint Elizabeth is the driest parish in Jamaica, the thing that separates this shore from the north coast. The September numbers: average high 87.9°F, average low 78.5°F, 4.16 inches of rain.

An average September records 10.5 days with at least 0.10 inch, roughly one day in three. Only 0.3 of a day reaches a full inch, which works out to a soaking of that size in about three Septembers out of ten. Most wet days here are small ones, enough to clear a beach for a while and not enough to cancel a drive inland. The reanalysis cannot say what hour the rain falls, so treat any timing claim you read, ours included, as a guess.

Between the 87.9°F high and the 78.5°F low there are 9.4 degrees, and the low arrives around dawn. Nothing in that range asks for a sweater. Pack for the water instead: a rain shell that folds into a daypack, a second pair of shoes so one can dry, and a dry bag if a camera is going on a boat. Our Jamaica packing list carries the full kit.

On September 15 the sun is up at 5:57 a.m. and down at 6:14 p.m. local time, Jamaica staying on UTC-5 all year, for about 12 hours 16 minutes of daylight. Boat trips and snorkeling slots should be back at the dock before 6 p.m., which in practice means an afternoon departure needs to leave by 3:30.

Can you swim on the South Coast in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off this coast averages 87.9°F in September, from the Open-Meteo Marine API, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. Daily maxima run a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean, so read the number as the afternoon end of the range rather than the reading you meet at 7 a.m.

That figure matches the month’s average air high, also 87.9°F, so the water neither cools you going in nor going out. No shock at the shoreline, no wetsuit, no natural limit on how long children stay in. What ends the swim is sunburn rather than cold, which makes shade and a rash guard the two things worth having on the sand between 11 and 3.

We found no wave-height or wind series for this stretch of coast, so no swell figures appear here and we make no claim about whether September runs calm or choppy. Storm swell is a separate question with its own calendar in our hurricane season guide. Ask the boat operator the morning of, not the week before.

How busy is the South Coast in September? Crowds, room rates and lodging tax

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the South Coast, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What our figures do fix is the sky: September carries more rain than August (4.16 inches against 2.81) and slightly less than October’s 4.33. Where Jamaica as a whole fills up across the year is the subject of best time to visit.

Book a rate you can move. Ten and a half wet days, plus the storm calendar laid out in our hurricane season guide, both argue for a reservation you can shift rather than one you forfeit. How many weeks ahead to book we cannot tell you, because our sources carry no lead-time data for this coast. Flights are the piece to settle early, and flights from the US has the routes.

We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage appears here. Two line items are still worth pricing before you commit: the room tax, whatever it turns out to be, and the road transfer to this side of the island, which airport transfers prices and trip cost folds into a week.

If you spend more on one thing in September, spend it on the room: air-conditioning for 78.5°F nights, and a covered veranda or an indoor table for the one day in three that turns wet. An uncovered sea-view terrace is the wrong upgrade in this particular month.

Things to do on the South Coast in September: Treasure Beach, Black River and YS Falls

September delivers the warmest sea of the three months we can compare, 87.9°F against 87.3 in August and 87.8 in October, with 12 hours 16 minutes of daylight to use it in. With rain landing on roughly a third of days, the structure that works is a water day taken first and a second plan held loose, instead of a fixed schedule written before you arrive.

Treasure Beach, the fishing settlement the ERA5 cell sits over, is the usual base, with the Black River and its safari boats to the west and YS Falls inland. We could not verify admission prices or opening hours for any of the three, so none appear here, and our things to do in Jamaica page carries what we have checked. Call ahead in September, since a wet day can change what runs.

Across August, September and October the sea moves 0.6°F in total while rainfall climbs by half again, from 2.81 inches to 4.16. A river trip or a waterfall reads much the same in September as in August, because the water it depends on barely shifts. What changes from month to month on this coast is the number of wet days on your itinerary.

Our sources list no free-admission days for September, so we name none. The beach costs nothing, and the 6:14 p.m. sunset gives it a last hour that also costs nothing, which is the cheapest hour of the day to be outdoors once the air has come off 87.9°F.

The South Coast in September: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 5:57 a.m., in the water by 7 while the air is well short of its 87.9°F high, breakfast at 9. Late morning for a boat, if the operator is going out. Midday and early afternoon under a roof. Back in the sea around 4, out by 5:45, sun gone at 6:14 p.m. Dinner is a night event in September, so reserve a table rather than walk out looking for one.

Day two goes inland by road, to YS Falls or the Black River, with our driving guide on the rules and getting around on the alternatives if you would rather not take the wheel. If the wet day lands on day one, swap the two around: 10.5 wet days in 30 gives each day the same odds, and cloud costs you less on a river than on the sand.

The South Coast in September vs August and October

Measure August September October
Average high 89.2°F 87.9°F 85.9°F
Average low 78.9°F 78.5°F 77.4°F
Precipitation 2.81 in 4.16 in 4.33 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 8.0 10.5 12.0
Sea surface (daily maxima) 87.3°F 87.9°F 87.8°F

August is the hottest and driest of the three: 89.2°F days, 2.81 inches, 8.0 wet days. October is the coolest and wettest: 85.9°F, 4.33 inches, 12.0 wet days. Nights track the days, 78.9°F in August, 78.5 in September, 77.4 in October. September sits between its neighbors on air and rain, and above both on water, at 87.9°F against 87.3 and 87.8.

Shift four weeks earlier and you gain 1.3°F of daytime heat and 2.5 fewer wet days, giving up 0.6°F of sea warmth. Shift four weeks later and the water holds at 87.8°F, but you add 1.5 wet days and lose 2.0°F off the daily high. Neither swap is large, and all three months swim. Our South Coast in August page has the earlier option in full.

Is September a good time to visit the South Coast?

Yes, if you came for water. Sea at 87.9°F, air high at the same 87.9°F, twelve and a quarter hours of daylight, and rain that mostly arrives in small amounts. No, if the trip hangs on fixed outdoor bookings you cannot move, or if you need a dry fortnight: 4.16 inches across 10.5 days will not give you one.

If the answer is no, August is the near miss, at 2.81 inches and 8.0 wet days, for 1.3°F more heat and a sea 0.6°F cooler. Beyond these three months we have no matching figures for this coast, so the wider calendar question goes to best time to visit Jamaica.

One thing September holds that neither neighbor does: the warmest sea of the three, 87.9°F, on days whose average high reads 87.9°F too.

The last word

Book the room you can cancel, keep one morning of the two empty, and take the water day first. Across August, September and October the sea moves 0.6°F in total while wet days climb from 8.0 to 12.0, so the choice between these months is a choice about how many afternoons get rearranged. September asks for one flexible day out of three and hands back the warmest water of the late summer, on a coast whose parish is the driest in the country.
