JAMAICA · SOUTH COAST · FEBRUARY
February hands Jamaica’s South Coast its quietest weather math of the year: 0.68 inches of rain across the whole month, an average afternoon high of 84.7°F, and a sea reading 81.2°F. This is Saint Elizabeth, fishing beaches and cattle country, a different Jamaica from the resort strip of Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.
What the month withholds is smaller than the brochures suggest, and worth knowing anyway. The sea in February is the coolest of the three winter months, by 0.9°F. Daylight runs 11 hours 36 minutes in mid-month, so evenings start early. And reopenings after Hurricane Melissa are still moving, which our recovery page tracks.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH COAST · FEBRUARY
February is the second-driest of Jamaica’s three winter months on this coast, with 1.5 wet days and 84.7°F afternoons, and the trade is a sea 0.9°F cooler than January’s.

The climate figures here come from a single grid cell at 17.8767°N, 77.7588°W, sitting over Treasure Beach in Saint Elizabeth, the driest parish in Jamaica. That dryness is exactly what separates this coast from the north shore, so do not stretch these numbers around the island. For the towns, the beaches and where to sleep, start with the South Coast guide. For the twelve-month picture, the best time to visit Jamaica does the yearly sorting.
South Coast weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days
| February on the South Coast | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.7°F | ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 |
| Average low | 73.0°F | ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 |

| Days with 1 in or more | 0.0 | ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 |

Every figure here is a model reanalysis, ECMWF’s ERA5 served through Open-Meteo and averaged over 1991-2020 for that Treasure Beach cell. No airport thermometer stands behind it. A real station record would differ, usually most on the overnight minimum, so read the numbers as the shape of the month rather than as a reading taken at a gate. On that basis: 84.7°F for the average high, 73.0°F for the average low, 0.68 inches of rain for the whole of February.
Split that 0.68 inches across the calendar and the model puts 1.5 days above the 0.10-inch mark, and 0.0 days above a full inch. Measurable rain lands roughly one day in twenty, and a typical February carries no downpour big enough to close a dirt road. Book the boat, the drive and the beach afternoon without a rain plan and the odds are with you most weeks.
Between the 84.7°F high and the 73.0°F low sits an 11.7-degree spread. Midday wants shade and a hat; a verandah at nine in the evening wants a long sleeve, which surprises people who packed for the Caribbean and nothing else. One light shirt or thin sweater covers it, and our packing list handles the rest of the bag.
On February 15 the coast gets 11 hours 36 minutes of daylight, and the sun goes down at 6:13 p.m. Jamaica time. Usable light ends before dinner, which reshapes any day that involves the coast road. Make 6 p.m. the hour you intend to be off the road, and read driving in Jamaica before you plan a long inland return.
Can you swim on the South Coast in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off this coast averages 81.2°F in February, and the small print matters: that is the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024 from Open-Meteo’s marine model, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. The water you meet at seven in the morning runs a little under the headline figure, and the water at four in the afternoon runs a little over it.
For a swimmer from anywhere north of Florida, 81.2°F means no gasp on entry and an hour in the water without shivering. Against an 84.7°F afternoon the sea barely registers as cool at all. The only cold moment of a February day here comes on the way out, when a breeze meets wet skin as the air slides toward that 73.0°F overnight low.
Wind and swell are where our data stops. Our sources carry no February wind speed and no wave height for this coast, so we give no figures and make no claim about which coves sit sheltered and which do not. Ask the boat operator on the morning itself, and treat any open run to an offshore sandbar as a weather call rather than a booking.
How busy is the South Coast in February? Crowds, prices and booking lead time
February falls inside the northern-winter travel window, which is a calendar fact and nothing more. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the South Coast, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the most expensive. What February does remove is the storm question: it sits outside the Atlantic hurricane season, and our hurricane page explains which months do not.
Treat this as a book-ahead month rather than a walk-in one. Guesthouse stock at Treasure Beach is small in absolute terms, and a specific room on specific dates goes early. Our working lead time is six to eight weeks (est.), flagged as an estimate because no availability data supports it. Flights from the US and what a Jamaica trip costs carry the money side.
We could not verify Jamaica’s current lodging-tax rate or the room bands it applies to, so no percentage appears here. The practical move is to ask any property for a quoted total rather than a nightly rate, and to ask separately whether a service charge sits on top of it. Know before you go gathers the other pieces of small print.
One upgrade genuinely changes a February here, and it is wheels. Without a car or a hired driver, the Black River, YS Falls and Appleton sit out of reach from a beach base, and a 6:13 p.m. sunset punishes every hour spent waiting for a lift. Current transfer and hire fares are not something we could verify, so we quote none: see airport transfers and getting around Jamaica.
Things to do on the South Coast in February: Black River, YS Falls and Pelican Bar

February’s numbers buy the thing this coast trades on, a dry morning on the water. With 1.5 wet days and 0.68 inches for the month, against March’s 2.6 days and 1.11 inches, a boat booking made now has better odds of going ahead than the same booking four weeks later. That margin is small in inches and large in plans.
The names worth a February list: the Black River for the mangrove and crocodile run, YS Falls inland, Floyd’s Pelican Bar standing on a sandbar offshore, Lovers’ Leap on the cliffs above the coast, the Appleton Estate up the valley, and Alligator Pond east along the shore for fried fish. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of them, so none appear here. Things to do in Jamaica holds the wider list.
None of those places changes its water with the calendar. A river and a waterfall run on rainfall that fell weeks earlier, and the falls in February look much as they do in April. What shifts is the air around them: 84.7°F afternoons, a 73.0°F night, and a monthly rain total less than two thirds of March’s 1.11 inches, so the inland drive is a dry-road drive far more often than not.
Free in February, as in every month, is the shoreline itself, and an hour walking the sand at Treasure Beach costs nothing at all. On organized events we came up empty: we found no verified February date for this coast, so we name none and promise none. Anything that does happen while you are there will be local news rather than something to plan a flight around.
The South Coast in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one belongs to the water. Breakfast by 7, on the boat at Black River around 8:30 while the air is still under the day’s peak, back on land for a late lunch. Take the sandbar run out to Pelican Bar in the softer light of mid-afternoon, be off the water by 5:30, and be parked by 6, because the sun is gone at 6:13. Keep dinner within walking distance of the bed.
Day two heads inland. Leave at 8 for YS Falls, add Appleton if the group wants the distillery, and aim to be back over the ridge by 4 with light in hand. Should the rare wet day land, it is the day that favors the drive rather than the beach: 1.5 days a month at 0.10 inch or more describes a shower, not a washout, and a river trip goes ahead in light rain more readily than an afternoon on sand.
The South Coast in February vs January and March
| Measure | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.4°F | 84.7°F | 85.1°F |
| Average low | 73.2°F | 73.0°F | 73.6°F |
| Precipitation | 0.52 in | 0.68 in | 1.11 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.3 | 1.5 | 2.6 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 82.1°F | 81.2°F | 82.1°F |
Across the three months the air hardly moves: average highs of 84.4, 84.7 and 85.1°F, with lows between 73.0 and 73.6°F. Rain is where they separate. January takes 0.52 inches over 1.3 wet days, February 0.68 over 1.5, March 1.11 over 2.6. The sea, oddly, dips in the middle, at 82.1°F in both January and March against February’s 81.2°F, all three from the marine model rather than the air series.
Shift four weeks back to January and you pick up 0.9°F of sea and drop 0.2 of a wet day, giving up almost nothing. Shift forward to March and you take on 1.1 extra wet days and 0.43 more inches of rain in exchange for 0.4°F on the afternoon high. The honest reading is that February sits in the middle of a three-month plateau, and your own calendar should decide rather than the weather.
Is February a good time to visit the South Coast?
For most travelers, yes. February delivers 84.7°F afternoons, an 81.2°F sea, measurable rain on about 1.5 days, and no hurricane question to manage. It disappoints two groups: swimmers chasing the warmest water available, since this is the cool point of the winter three, and anyone who wants long evenings, because 11 hours 36 minutes of daylight makes a full day rather than a long one.
If the answer tips toward no, take January instead. The air is within 0.3°F on the high, the sea runs 0.9°F warmer, and the month carries 0.16 inches less rain across 0.2 fewer wet days. Push to March only when the calendar forces it, since March raises the wet-day count from 1.5 to 2.6 and nearly doubles the rain total.
February’s own claim is narrow but real: it is the last month before March’s rain steps up, and the one month of the three where the model shows no day at all reaching an inch of rain.
The last word
Book the boat for your first morning and let everything else find its own shape. The sun comes up at 6:37 a.m. on February 15, which leaves a wide, cool window on the Black River before the day climbs toward 84.7°F, and that window is the single best reason to set an alarm on this coast. If you are still torn between two months, put January and February side by side and let 0.9°F of sea temperature settle it, because very little else does.
