The South Coast in October: Weather, Sea Temperature and How November Compares

Rain is the number people check for October here, and on this coast it comes to 4.33 inches spread across 12 days that record at least 0.10 inch. The sea sits at 87.8°F, a tenth of a degree off September. Daylight on the 15th runs 11 hours 46 minutes, with the sun gone at 5:49 p.m.

That last figure reorganizes a trip more than the rain does. A full October day gives you swimming at bath temperature, an afternoon that can lose an hour to a shower, and an evening that starts before six. The trade against the next month prices out at 6.8 rain days for 1.8°F of sea temperature, October against November.

Go for: swimming, with sea surface averaging 87.8°F, and for a coast whose parish, Saint Elizabeth, is the driest in Jamaica.

Think twice before: paying for non-refundable nights inside the Atlantic hurricane season, or booking a 4 p.m. boat trip when the light goes at 5:49 p.m.

These normals come from Open-Meteo’s ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis for 1991-2020, computed on the grid cell at 17.8767N, 77.7588W, sitting over Treasure Beach in Saint Elizabeth. That is a model cell, not an airport thermometer, and the difference is worth knowing before you compare it with a station figure from elsewhere. Saint Elizabeth is also the driest parish in Jamaica, so 4.33 inches does not travel north with you to Ocho Rios or Port Antonio.

Twelve days with 0.10 inch or more means measurable rain about two days in five. Only 0.4 of a day reaches a full inch, so a genuine soaking lands in roughly two Octobers out of five. In practice that reads as a wet hour inside a day you can still use. We have no hourly breakdown for this cell, so we will not tell you the shower arrives at four o’clock.

Between the 85.9°F day and the 77.4°F night sits 8.5°F, a smaller swing than most American visitors pack for. Nothing in that range asks for a sweater. It asks for a second dry shirt, a dry bag on boat days and shoes that survive a wet road, and the rest of the kit is in our packing list.

On October 15 the sun rises at 6:03 a.m. and sets at 5:49 p.m. local time, for 11 hours 46 minutes of daylight. Jamaica stays on UTC-5 all year, so no clock change moves under you mid-trip. A river trip leaving at 4 p.m. finishes in the dark, while sunrise at 6:03 a.m. makes a 7 a.m. boat start perfectly ordinary.

Can you swim on the South Coast in October? Sea temperature and wind

Sea surface off this coast averages 87.8°F in October in the Open-Meteo Marine API, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. The framing matters: a mean of daily peaks reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour average, so take 87.8°F as the afternoon end of the range rather than the number waiting for you at dawn.

At that reading there is no cold shock and no cooling effect either. Snorkeling for an hour needs nothing worn for warmth, swimming hard stops being refreshing, and the limit on your morning is the sun rather than the water. Drink more than you think you need, since 85.9°F air over 87.8°F sea leaves your body very little room to shed heat.

We could not verify wind or swell statistics for October on this coast, so no wave heights and no wind speeds appear here. What is dated is the calendar: October falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and our hurricane-season page carries that file. Check what reopened after Hurricane Melissa before you pay a deposit on this stretch.

How busy is the South Coast in October? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the South Coast, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. The calendar fact stands on its own: October falls after the North American summer holidays, inside hurricane season, and ahead of the winter travel wave. That is a position in the year, not a price.

With no rate data we will not tell you to book eleven weeks out. The deadline that matters in October is the cancellation one. Take refundable rooms, read the change rules on your ticket (flights from the US), and confirm your airport transfer still holds if you shift a day. Most stays on this coast run three or four nights (est.) inside a longer island trip.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Jamaica, so no percentage appears in this paragraph. The budget lines we can put figures against live in the trip-cost page, and the question of getting around the coast is handled in Getting Around Jamaica.

One upgrade changes October rather than decorating it, and that is flexibility: a refundable room and a rebookable flight. A rental car comes second (driving in Jamaica covers the road rules), because 12 rain days across a spread-out coast means moving your afternoon on your own schedule instead of an operator’s.

Things to do on the South Coast in October

Of the three months in view, October is the one that pairs September’s water with cooler air. The sea reads 87.8°F against September’s 87.9°F, while the daytime average has already come down 2.0°F to 85.9°F and the night has dropped 1.1°F to 77.4°F. November takes the water to 86.0°F, so this is the last of the three months above 87°F at the surface.

Treasure Beach, where the grid cell sits, is the usual base, with Black River boat trips, YS Falls, Lovers’ Leap and the stilt bar off the Parottee shore on the same stretch. We did not verify current fares or opening hours for any of those operators, and we print no price we have not read. Our things-to-do page frames the options, then call ahead and confirm.

What October changes at those places is the air above them, since we hold no monthly water temperatures for rivers or waterfalls. The 85.9°F afternoon is what you stand in between swims, the 12 wet days put rain somewhere inside a two-day plan, and a boat leaving at 3 p.m. comes back under a sky that has gone dark by six.

We could not verify any free-admission dates for October on this coast, so we name none. The one thing that costs nothing is the swimming, and at 87.8°F it is the activity this month does better than anything else on the list.

The South Coast in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one keys to the 6:03 a.m. sunrise. In the water by seven, breakfast at eight, then the Black River boat trip in the morning while the air is still short of its 85.9°F peak. Eat lunch under a roof, keep noon to three shaded, and go back out at four knowing the light quits at 5:49 p.m. Dinner is a dark-sky meal by half past six.

Day two goes inland by car, with YS Falls as the anchor and the return timed to reach the room before nightfall, for the reasons our driving guide sets out. If the sky closes in, the swap is easy: the sea reads 87.8°F whatever is happening above it, so a wet afternoon is still a swimming afternoon. Move the boat trip, not the swim.

The South Coast in October vs September and November

September October November
Average high 87.9°F 85.9°F 85.2°F
Average low 78.5°F 77.4°F 75.8°F
Precipitation 4.16 in 4.33 in 2.04 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 10.5 12.0 5.2
Sea surface (daily maxima) 87.9°F 87.8°F 86.0°F

September runs hotter and marginally drier: 87.9°F by day against October’s 85.9°F, 4.16 inches against 4.33, and 10.5 wet days against 12.0. Its water, at 87.9°F, beats October by a tenth of a degree. November is where the pattern breaks, with 2.04 inches, 5.2 wet days and a sea still worth swimming at 86.0°F.

Slide four weeks later and you give up 1.8°F of sea temperature and 0.7°F of daytime warmth to gain 6.8 fewer rain days and less than half the rainfall. Slide four weeks earlier into September and you pick up 2.0°F more daytime heat and 1.5 fewer wet days, with the same water to within a tenth of a degree.

Is October a good time to visit the South Coast?

Yes for anyone whose vacation is built around water: 87.8°F sea, 85.9°F air, and rain that clears 0.10 inch on 12 days while reaching a full inch on 0.4 of them. No if your days depend on fixed-date land excursions that cannot slip, and no if a non-refundable booking inside hurricane season would leave you out of pocket rather than merely annoyed.

If the answer is no, move to November and read the reason in the arithmetic: 2.04 inches instead of 4.33, 5.2 wet days instead of 12.0, and water that has only slipped to 86.0°F. The bill for that comes to 1.8°F of sea temperature and 0.7°F off the daytime average.

October alone holds September’s water within a tenth of a degree under air that has already given back 2.0°F of daytime heat.

The last word

Book October for the water and build the land days around 5:49 p.m., then spend the extra money on the cancellation policy rather than the room. One figure we have not used yet: November nights average 75.8°F against October’s 77.4°F, and that 1.6°F decides whether a ceiling fan gets you through until morning. Weigh it against a sea that is 1.8°F warmer now, and the month picks itself.
