The South Coast in August: Weather, Sea Temperature and Rain Days

August on the South Coast runs at an average high of 89.2°F and an average low of 78.9°F, with 2.81 inches of rain falling across eight days that record at least a tenth of an inch. The sea off the shore averages 87.3°F. Those four numbers settle most of the question. What they leave open is how the month sits against the four weeks on either side of it.

Against July, August adds almost an inch of rain and a degree and a half of sea warmth. Against September, it keeps 1.35 inches and two and a half wet days off your week. For a trip built around water that is a good trade. For what it costs, we found no rate or occupancy series for this coast, so nothing below calls a month cheap: our trip-cost page holds the figures we could price.

August hands you water at 87.3°F and eight wet days, two and a half fewer than September, so swimmers do well and anyone needing a cool night does not.

Every figure here comes from a model reanalysis, ECMWF ERA5 served through Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991-2020 for the grid cell at 17.88° N, 77.76° W. That cell sits over Treasure Beach, in Saint Elizabeth, the driest parish in Jamaica, and that dryness is exactly what separates this coast from the north shore. No airport thermometer stands under it, and a station record would not land on the same decimal.

The ERA5 series puts the August high at 89.2°F and the low at 78.9°F, with monthly rainfall at 2.81 inches. These are thirty-year grid-cell averages, so any single August can sit well off them, and the series says nothing at all about a storm tracking south of the island in the week you happen to travel.

Eight days in an average August record a tenth of an inch or more, roughly one day in four. Only 0.1 day records an inch or more, which is one real soaking about every ten Augusts. Spread 2.81 inches over those eight days and you get about a third of an inch each time: a wet hour rather than a wet day. Plans move around it, they rarely die of it.

Day and night sit 10.3°F apart, 89.2°F in the afternoon against 78.9°F before dawn. Nothing you pack needs to be warm. Everything you pack needs to dry: two swimsuits rather than one, a long-sleeved shirt worn against sun instead of chill, and shoes that survive a downpour and a river. Our packing list handles the rest of the bag.

On August 15 the sun rises at 10:52 UTC and sets at 23:38 UTC, which on the ground is 5:52 am and 6:38 pm, for 12 hours 46 minutes of daylight. Anything that needs light should be finished by half past six. A late return on an unlit parish road happens in the dark, and our driving page explains why we plan around that rather than through it.

Can you swim in the South Coast in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off the South Coast averages 87.3°F in August in the Open-Meteo Marine API, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. Read that as the afternoon value. A mean of daily maxima runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean, so the water at seven in the morning is a touch cooler than the number, and no source we used measures it hour by hour.

At 87.3°F there is no gasp on entry and no reason to inch in. Children stay in until they are called out. An hour of snorkeling costs you nothing in body heat, which moves the limit from cold to sun: rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat waiting on the sand. The water is also warmer than the air will be at dawn, so an early swim is the coolest thing you do all day.

On wind and swell we have nothing to give you. We found no wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we publish no figures and no averages. Ask the boat operator on the morning you go out, and treat a canceled river or reef trip as a weather call rather than a pattern for the month.

How busy is the South Coast in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for the South Coast, so we crown no month expensive and no month a bargain. What we can say is calendar rather than price: August falls inside the US summer break, and this coast draws a smaller, slower crowd than the resort strips. For the island-wide view of when demand rises, see our best-time-to-visit page.

Booking follows from the same gap in the data. With no rate curve to point at, we set no deadline in weeks and invent none. Our own habit for a summer week here is to lock the room and the car together about six to eight weeks out (est.), because small guesthouses on this coast hold few rooms each. Flights come first: the US routes and the transfer options decide which end of the coast you sleep on.

We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage appears anywhere above. Treat a quoted nightly price as provisional until the confirmation email spells out taxes and any service charge, and ask the property directly if the booking page stays vague.

One upgrade genuinely changes August, and it is the night. With the average low at 78.9°F, a room with real air conditioning rather than a ceiling fan is what separates a slept-in week from a sticky one. Everything else on this coast, food, boats, beach, works the same at any price. Where to stay in Jamaica sorts the bases.

Water is what this month buys. Eight wet days against September’s 10.5, and a sea already at 87.3°F, means the swimming, snorkeling and boat half of the coast runs on something close to schedule. Land plans survive too, because the rain arrives in short quantities rather than in inch-deep days.

The named stops are close together: Treasure Beach and its string of coves, the boat trips out of Black River, YS Falls inland, Appleton Estate up the valley, the cliff at Lovers’ Leap, and the stilt bar standing on the Parottee sandbar. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of them, so we quote none. Call or check the operator’s page the week you travel, and ask about closing days.

August changes the air around these places more than the water in them. At 89.2°F by mid-afternoon, a river pool or a waterfall reads distinctly cold on the first step, which is the point. The month’s 2.81 inches can also color a river brown for a day, though with only 0.1 day at an inch or more, a trip lost to high water is rare.

On free entry we have nothing verified: we found no fee-free day or free window at any South Coast site in August, so we name none. What costs nothing is fixed anyway. The beach, the walk along the shore before seven, and the 6:38 pm sunset are all on the house, and the first of those is best taken at 5:52 am.

The South Coast in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one belongs to the shore. Up at 5:52 am for the sunrise swim, when the water at 87.3°F beats the 78.9°F air. Breakfast at eight, a boat or snorkel slot by nine, and back under shade by eleven. Give the 89.2°F block from eleven to three to a long lunch, a hammock, or a room with air conditioning. Back in the sea around four, then dinner timed to a 6:38 pm sunset.

Day two goes inland: Black River in the morning, YS Falls or Appleton after, and back on the coast road with light to spare. If the sky turns, remember the shape of the rain, roughly a third of an inch on a wet day, so a covered lunch usually outlasts it. Should the river run high, swap the boat for the distillery and the cliff at Lovers’ Leap, and keep the swim for the late afternoon.

The South Coast in August vs July and September

Measure July August September
Average high 89.5°F 89.2°F 87.9°F
Average low 78.8°F 78.9°F 78.5°F
Precipitation 1.85 in 2.81 in 4.16 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 5.7 8.0 10.5
Sea surface, daily-max mean 85.8°F 87.3°F 87.9°F

Heat barely moves across the three months: 89.5°F, 89.2°F and 87.9°F, with lows inside half a degree of each other. Rain moves a great deal. July takes 1.85 inches over 5.7 wet days, August 2.81 inches over eight, September 4.16 inches over 10.5. The sea climbs steadily through the same stretch, from 85.8°F to 87.3°F to 87.9°F in the marine series.

Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 1.5°F of sea warmth for 2.3 fewer wet days, which is the case the July page makes. Shift four weeks later and you gain 0.6°F in the water while taking on 1.35 more inches of rain and two and a half more wet days. August sits between the two, closer to July’s sky than to September’s.

Is August a good time to visit the South Coast?

Yes if the trip is built on water. At 87.3°F the sea asks nothing of you, eight wet days out of thirty-one leave most mornings clear, and 12 hours 46 minutes of daylight is plenty for a boat trip and a beach afternoon on the same day. No if you need cool nights, since the average low sticks at 78.9°F, or if a single rained-out afternoon would spoil a short trip.

If that is you, move earlier rather than later. July holds nearly identical heat at 89.5°F but only 5.7 wet days and 1.85 inches of rain, and the sea at 85.8°F is warm by any measure. September runs the other way on every count that matters here, and storm risk is its own subject: the hurricane-season page carries what we know about it.

What August alone offers is water 1.5°F warmer than July’s with two and a half fewer wet days than September’s.

The last word

Decide on the night, not the day: pay for air conditioning and August stops being a negotiation, because the 89.2°F afternoon is easy to hide from and the 78.9°F dawn is not. Then use that dawn. The sea reads 87.3°F in the marine series and the air bottoms out at 78.9°F, so the water you step into at 5:52 am is warmer than the sand you left it on.
