Kingston in April: Weather, Rain Days, Sea Temperature and Heritage Sites

April catches Kingston between the dry spell of March and the heavier rains of May. The result is a warm, mostly settled month for walking a capital built on forts, cathedrals and monuments. Jamaica’s biggest city sits on the sheltered south coast, far from the north-shore resorts, and its best April hours come early.

The month rewards an early alarm. With sunrise before six and afternoon highs near 85°F, you do the Port Royal forts in the cool of the morning and save cathedral interiors for midday. Evenings are for the harbor, a cold drink and a flight home that already feels too soon.

Come in April for Kingston’s forts, churches and monuments in warm, mostly dry weather, start outdoors at first light, and look to March if you want the driest of the three spring months.

Kingston weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days

Across 1991-2020, an average April in Kingston peaks at 85.0°F, bottoms out at 72.6°F and collects 1.62 inches of rain. Those normals come from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis, served by Open-Meteo, for a model grid cell at 17.997°N, 76.7936°W over the city: a computed value, not an airport thermometer. The cell sits on the sheltered south coast, the island’s driest side, so every figure here describes Kingston and not the resort shore around Ocho Rios or Montego Bay.

Measurable rain, at least 0.10 inch, falls on 4.1 days of an average April, roughly one day in seven. Not one of those days reaches an inch in the average record. In practice that points to showers you can sit out, with no deluge built into the month. Keep one indoor stop in reserve each day and pack a compact umbrella.

From the 72.6°F small hours to the 85.0°F afternoon, the swing is 12.4°F, and nights stay in the low 70s. Leave the sweater at home. Pack for sun on open ramparts at Port Royal instead: a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, a refillable bottle and one light long-sleeved shirt for the midday glare. Our Jamaica packing list covers the rest of the bag.

On April 15 Kingston gets about 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight. Sunrise-sunset.org puts sunrise at 10:49 UTC and sunset at 23:25 UTC, or 5:49 am and 6:25 pm local time, five hours behind UTC. Tropical dusk is short, so plan your last outdoor stop to wrap up by about 6 pm.

Can you swim in Kingston in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Kingston at 82.9°F in April, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a 24-hour average. Tables built on daily means will show slightly less for the same water.

At 82.9°F the water sits just 2.1°F below the 85.0°F air high, so wading in brings no gasp, even for children and cold-shy swimmers. We found no beach, water-quality or lifeguard record for Kingston Harbour in our sources, so we name no swimming spot in the city. The coast beyond Kingston is in our south coast guide.

Our sources carry no April wind or swell reading for this stretch of coast, so we make no call on chop or surf. Check a marine forecast the day before any boat outing and ask the operator about conditions when you book.

How busy is Kingston in April? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Kingston, so we crown no month cheap or expensive, April included. The weather calendar is firmer ground: April still sits in the drier stretch before May’s rain days more than double. For the island-wide run of peak and shoulder months, see the best time to visit Jamaica.

Without a price series we cannot say how many weeks ahead rates start to move. Book the flight first, using our guide to flights from the US, then fit two nights in Kingston to it for the itinerary below. Our Jamaica trip-cost guide helps you set the daily budget around it.

We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate or how Kingston hotels apply it, so we give no percentage. Ask for the all-in nightly total, taxes and fees included, before you pay a deposit.

Spend the extra on air conditioning. An April night in Kingston averages 72.6°F, and a room with working AC and a ceiling fan decides how well you sleep before the 5:49 am sunrise and those early starts at the forts.

Things to do in Kingston in April

April pairs the city’s heritage roll with its drier weeks: 4.1 rain days against the 8.9 of May. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, the statutory body that declares National Monuments, lists about forty heritage sites for Kingston alone, and many of them mean time outdoors, from Port Royal’s forts to National Heroes Park.

At Port Royal, Fort Charles went up first, in the late 1650s, followed by Fort Carlisle, Fort Morgan and Fort Rocky. Once called “the richest and wickedest city in the world,” the town lost its original St. Peter’s Church in the 1692 earthquake. Rockfort, on Kingston’s eastern edge, was fortified in 1694 against a feared French invasion from Santo Domingo. National Heroes Park holds dated memorials, from Marcus Garvey’s (1964) to Nanny of the Maroons’ (dedicated October 14, 1999). Downtown, the Ward Theatre, a 1912 gift from Colonel Charles Ward, stands on St. William Grant Park.

Stone and brick hold still all year, while the April air climbs from 72.6°F at dawn to 85.0°F by afternoon. Take the unshaded forts and the park in the first hours after sunrise. Midday suits covered interiors: Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1911 in the Byzantine-revival style, Kingston Parish Church, raised around 1911 on the foundations of the original, and Wesley Methodist Church, erected in 1825.

We could not find opening hours or admission fees for any Kingston site on a stable official page, and the Trust describes monuments without publishing visiting times or prices. We quote none, so check at the gate or with your hotel. Street fronts cost nothing to admire: the two-story Jamaica Georgian house at 150 East Street, one of the few of its design left in the city, the grand Kingston Railway Station on the same lines, and Liberty Hall, center of the Kingston division of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association.

Kingston in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one: reach Port Royal soon after the 5:49 am sunrise and walk Fort Charles and the St. Peter’s Church site before 10 am, while the air is closest to its 72.6°F floor. Take lunch and shade through the hottest hours, then spend mid-afternoon inside Holy Trinity Cathedral. Around 4 pm, head downtown to St. William Grant Park and the Ward Theatre, and end at the 1907 Earthquake Monument before the 6:25 pm sunset. Transport between Port Royal and downtown is in our getting-around guide.

Day two: be at National Heroes Park by 7 am for the memorials to Norman Manley (dedicated September 16, 1972) and Alexander Bustamante (completed October 1979). Late morning, visit Trench Town Culture Yard, one of the Central Housing Authority houses built between 1940 and 1949, after a look at our safety advice. If one of April’s 4.1 wet days finds you, move the Institute of Jamaica, founded in 1879, to the front and keep the park for a dry spell. The average April has no day with an inch of rain.

Kingston in April vs March and May

Kingston normal March April May
Average high 83.6°F 85.0°F 85.3°F
Average low 71.1°F 72.6°F 74.5°F
Precipitation 1.49 in 1.62 in 4.11 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.4 4.1 8.9
Sea surface, mean of daily maxima (2015-2024) 81.7°F 82.9°F 84.6°F

From March to May the average high barely moves, 83.6°F to 85.0°F to 85.3°F, while nights warm faster: 71.1°F, 72.6°F, then 74.5°F (ERA5, 1991-2020). Rain splits the three. March brings 1.49 inches over 3.4 wet days and April 1.62 inches over 4.1, but May jumps to 4.11 inches over 8.9 days, more than two and a half times April’s total. The sea, per Open-Meteo’s Marine API on 2015-2024 daily maxima, climbs from 81.7°F to 82.9°F to 84.6°F.

Shifting to Kingston in March gives you 0.7 fewer wet days and nights 1.5°F cooler, at the cost of a sea 1.2°F cooler. Shifting to Kingston in May adds 1.7°F to the sea and 1.9°F to the nights, along with 4.8 more wet days and 2.49 more inches of rain. We have no fare or room-rate series for any of the three months, so price stays out of the trade.

Is April a good time to visit Kingston?

Yes, for a city trip built on history and music: the forts, churches, memorials and Trench Town all fit a warm month with few wet days and long mornings. No, for a beach week with sand at the door. Kingston’s figures say nothing about the north coast, and travelers after that holiday should compare Negril and Montego Bay, or fold the capital into our 7-day Jamaica itinerary.

If April does not work, choose March. Its 1.49 inches is the lowest rainfall of the three spring months, its 71.1°F nights are the coolest, and its 83.6°F afternoons make a midday rampart easier to bear. Save May for a trip that puts the water first.

Among these three months, April alone pairs a sea above 82°F with fewer than five wet days.

The last word

Book April for Kingston if the trip is about the city itself, and set the alarm: a 5:49 am sunrise and a 12.4°F climb by afternoon decide the order of every day. Add Edna Manley’s sculpture “Negro Aroused” to your list. Created in 1935, it is a declared national monument, and it deserves a slot on your second morning next to Garvey, Manley and Nanny.
