Tampa is a cruise homeport rather than a port of call: Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines. You fly in and sail out of it, which is a different trip from a city where a hull ties up for six hours and leaves. The other half of the city is river water. Three state parks in Hillsborough County count their canoe, kayak and tube launches one by one, and the state publishes the count.

That combination decides the booking more than any neighborhood preference does. A sailing date turns the night before into a fixed reservation, and every night booked in the county carries county and state taxes that were not in the rate you clicked. The parks pull the other way: they sit out past the suburbs, their lots are small, and a rental car stops being optional the moment paddling enters the plan. Tampa International, meanwhile, is one of the busiest airports in the country by passengers boarded.

The regional transit site returned a 404, another did not respond, and the airport’s own site returned a 403 to our reader. Nothing was estimated in their place. What is there to do in Tampa?

Florida counts what its parks contain, and the numbers sort the three river parks quickly. Hillsborough River State Park lists 350 parking spaces, 3 canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail, the largest of the three on every measure. Little Manatee River State Park has 109 spaces, 1 launch and 8.4 miles of trail, so it walks farther than it paddles. Alafia River State Park is the small one: 50 spaces, 1 launch, 1.2 miles of trail.

In town, Ybor City Museum State Park keeps 311 feet of boardwalk inside the old cigar district, which makes it a stop on a walk rather than an afternoon of its own. What we cannot give you for any of the four is a fee or a closing time, for the reason above. Before you drive out, confirm the gate with the park itself, and use the statewide list if the rivers are not your morning.

Which airport do you fly into for Tampa?

Tampa International boarded 12,075,591 passengers in calendar year 2024, the figure the FAA uses to class it a large hub. For a visitor that means the nonstop map is wide and getting here from most American cities is an ordinary booking, not a routing puzzle. It also means TPA is the reference airport for the whole central Gulf coast, which our flights guide uses as its anchor for this side of the state.

From the curb, the options are the familiar American set: rental counters, taxis, rideshare. We are not printing a fare, a frequency or a drop-off point for any of them, because the pages that publish those numbers would not open to us on September 11, 2026. Price the ride in the app while you are still at the gate, and if a ship is on your dates, treat the port transfer as its own line in the budget.

For cruise passengers the sequence is short: land, sleep one night, board. The eight homeported vessels sail from the city itself, so that night before can be spent in Ybor or downtown instead of beside an interchange. What does a hotel night cost in Tampa?

Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on every night booked, collected alongside the 6% state sales tax. On the rate you were quoted, that is 12% before anything else lands on the folio. A resort fee, where a property charges one, is set by that property and is not a tax, which is why it appears on no county schedule and on your bill anyway. When is the best time to visit Tampa?

Start with where the temperature is measured. The monthly normals for Tampa come from a single NOAA station, USW00012842, “TAMPA INTL AP”, and every figure here is read off that one gauge instead of a model grid cell. It sits at the airport, inland on the bay side. An airfield reading and a Gulf-facing beach do not always agree at either end of the day, so use the normals as the city’s number and expect the sand to behave slightly differently.

The state’s calendar still rules the decision. Florida’s dry season runs November through April, which is why winter beds here are never a bargain, and the wet half of the year brings the afternoon storm pattern along with the Atlantic hurricane season, officially June 1 to November 30. Summer has one strong answer within driving reach, and it is the spring country north of the city. The state counts those parks too: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park lists 255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park 197 spaces, Crystal River Preserve State Park 77. The last word. Tampa rewards travelers who book the river before the room. Take a morning on the Hillsborough from one of its three launches, give Ybor’s 311 feet of boardwalk the hour when the sun turns unreasonable, and add 12% to the nightly rate before you decide the city is cheap.
