NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals put May at an 88.3°F average high, a 70.6°F average low and 2.60 inches of precipitation. Things to do in Tampa in May: Hillsborough River, Little Manatee River and Weeki Wachee

May is the last full month before the rain changes shape. June brings 7.37 inches across 9.5 days at 0.10 inch or more, against 2.60 inches across 3.9 days in May. A full-day outdoor plan holds together now without a rebuild at two in the afternoon, and the storm season has not started.

Hillsborough River State Park is the large one by the state’s own count: 350 parking spaces, 3 canoe, kayak and tube launches, 5 miles of hiking trail. Little Manatee River State Park carries the longest walk of the three at 8.4 miles, with 109 spaces and one launch. Alafia River State Park is the small one, 50 spaces and 1.2 miles. North of the city the state counts 255 spaces and one designated swimming area at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 197 at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and 77 at Crystal River Preserve State Park.

Spring water holds its temperature all year and the air above it does not, and that gap is the whole season. April’s normal high is 83.0°F, May’s 88.3°F, so the same constant water reads colder and better against a hotter afternoon. Tampa in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs against the heat. Sunrise on May 15 is 6:38 a.m., and the 5 miles at Hillsborough River State Park go down easily between seven and ten, while the air sits nearer the 70.6°F low than the 88.3°F high. Give the middle of the day to Ybor City and a long indoor lunch. Is May a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes if the trip has water in it. 82.9°F Gulf, 2.60 inches of rain for the entire month, an eight-o’clock sunset and no storm season to watch make a strong case for swimmers, paddlers and anyone traveling with children. No if you walk long distances in the middle of the day, and no if you need a cool evening, since the normal low never drops below 70.6°F.

Move to April if that second description fits. The same 2.55 inches of rain, an 83.0°F afternoon and a 64.8°F night make the trails and the city walking work at hours that May closes off. The cost is the water: 77.1°F instead of 82.9°F, which is felt in the first thirty seconds of every swim.

No other month pairs April’s rain total with June’s swimming: May gets 82.9°F water on 3.9 wet days, and June’s version of that water arrives with 9.5.
