Tampa in May sits on a useful edge of the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center, so a May trip runs its whole length outside it. Meanwhile the water off Tampa has already warmed well past April, and June’s rain has not yet arrived.

Getting here is simple. Tampa International (TPA) boarded 12,075,591 passengers in 2024, and the FAA classes it a large hub, so most American cities have a route in. One gap to know before you plan. We could not read state park entrance fees or opening hours: the operators’ pages refused our machine reads, so we quote neither. Check the park’s own page the week you travel.

Tampa weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

The normals below come from one real thermometer: NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012842, “TAMPA INTL AP”. A station normal like this differs from a reanalysis grid cell, and the gauge sits at the airport, inland on the bay side rather than on a beach. At that spot May averages a high of 88.3°F, a low of 70.6°F and 2.60 inches of rain. A beach towel on the Gulf may feel a breeze the airport does not record, and we have no beach station series to measure it.

An average May logs 3.9 days with at least 0.10 inch of rain, so measurable rain turns up about one day in eight. Only 0.8 day reaches an inch or more: a typical May brings a single heavy soaking, and some years none. In practice most mornings of a trip stay dry. Pack a compact umbrella and keep one indoor stop, such as the Tampa Bay History Center, ready for the odd wet afternoon.

From the 70.6°F dawn to the 88.3°F afternoon, the day swings 17.7°F. Evenings stay warm enough for short sleeves on the Riverwalk, so a jacket is dead weight. Bring breathable clothes, a hat and sunscreen for the peak hours, plus one thin layer for air-conditioned museums, restaurants and the flight home.

May 15 gives about 13 hours 35 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:38 a.m. and sets at 8:13 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, converted from sunrise-sunset.org’s 10:38 and 00:13 UTC. Dinner at seven still happens in full light, and a sunset walk fits after it.

Can you swim in Tampa in May? Sea temperature and water comfort

Yes. The sea surface off Tampa averages 82.9°F in May, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. Other tables built on daily means will print a lower May number, and both can be right for what they measure.

At 82.9°F most swimmers walk straight in without the cold-water pause that April’s 77.1°F can bring. Children can stay in for long stretches, and a snorkel mask becomes pleasant rather than bracing. The number describes open water off Tampa as a whole. A shallow bay beach can read warmer by afternoon, and we have no per-beach series to confirm it.

We found no wind or wave series for Tampa in May, so we give no figure for chop or swell. The calendar fact we can serve comes from the NOAA National Hurricane Center: the season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, which leaves May entirely outside it. How busy is Tampa in May? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel occupancy series or monthly room-rate data for Tampa, so we rank May against no other month on price or crowds. The calendar still places it: after the spring rush the state guide describes, and before June 1 opens hurricane season. We have no booking-window data, so we give no week count for reserving. Two May facts do shape the booking. A stay that ends by May 31 needs no hurricane clause. A cruise changes the plan entirely: Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines, so you fly in and sail out, and a hotel the night before the sailing removes the risk of a late flight. Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid together with Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per the Florida Department of Revenue. Those two lines add 12% to a room rate. We did not verify whether any local surtax stacks on top, so treat 12% as the floor of the tax line and check the final folio.

With average highs of 88.3°F, the spending that changes a May trip is location. A room within walking distance of the Riverwalk or a TECO Line Streetcar stop lets you retreat for an air-conditioned break at midday and head back out when the heat eases toward the 8:13 p.m. sunset. A cheaper room far from both costs you that break every day.

Things to do in Tampa in May

May pairs a sea at 82.9°F with only 3.9 rain days. April’s water sits near 77.1°F, and June brings 9.5 rain days, so May is the month of the three when a Gulf swim and a dry paddling morning both land in the same trip without a backup plan.

Honeymoon Island State Park, on the Gulf northwest of Tampa, is the big beach: the state counts 2,021 parking spaces, one designated swimming area and 1,671 feet of boardwalk. Its lot is nearly six times the 350 spaces at Hillsborough River State Park, where three canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail make a river morning. Smaller Alafia River State Park has 50 spaces, one launch and 1.2 miles of trail. Figures come from the Florida DEP’s 2024 inventory.

Three springs sit within reach, and the state counts them: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park with 255 spaces and one designated swimming area, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park with 197, and Crystal River Preserve State Park with 77. Spring water holds its temperature all year. The air above it does not, and at 88.3°F in May a spring swim cools you more sharply than it would in winter. The TECO Line Streetcar is free to ride, per both HART and the City of Tampa. It runs 2.7 miles from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City every 15 minutes. The Tampa Riverwalk, a 2.6-mile public path on the Hillsborough River, links the Tampa Convention Center, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children’s Museum, the Tampa Bay History Center, Amalie Arena and Water Works Park. Tampa in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one, the city. Start on the Riverwalk soon after the 6:38 a.m. sunrise, at Water Works Park, and walk south while the air is near its 70.6°F low. Late morning, move indoors to the Tampa Bay History Center or the Tampa Museum of Art (we could not verify their hours, so check before you go). After lunch, ride the free streetcar to Ybor City and walk the 311 feet of boardwalk at Ybor City Museum State Park. Ride back for dinner and a Riverwalk stroll before the 8:13 p.m. sunset.

Day two, the water. Drive out early to Honeymoon Island for the designated swimming area, or to Weeki Wachee for a spring swim, and aim to be back in shade by the hottest hours. If one of May’s 3.9 rain days lands, swap the beach for the Glazer Children’s Museum or the History Center. Tampa in May vs April and June

On NOAA’s airport normals, May runs 5.3°F hotter than April by day (88.3°F against 83.0°F) and 5.8°F warmer at night. Rain barely moves between them: 2.55 inches in April, 2.60 in May. June is where the rain changes, with 7.37 inches and 9.5 wet days, nearly triple May’s total. The sea, from the Open-Meteo Marine API, climbs from 77.1°F in April to 82.9°F in May and 86.6°F in June. Move four weeks earlier and you gain cooler afternoons and dawns near 64.8°F, but lose 5.8°F of sea temperature. Move four weeks later and you gain the warmest water of the three at 86.6°F, but take on 9.5 rain days, highs of 90.5°F and a trip inside hurricane season from June 1. Is May a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes, for swimmers, families with a beach day in mind, paddlers and cruise passengers who want a dry run-up to the sailing. It suits less well travelers who plan long hikes or bike rides through the middle of the day, since 88.3°F is the average high and not the peak.

If heat is the deal-breaker, choose April. Its 83.0°F highs and 3.4 rain days make outdoor afternoons easier, and 77.1°F water still works for a quick swim, if a cooler one.

Of April, May and June, May alone combines a sea above 80°F, fewer than four rain days and a calendar that ends before hurricane season opens on June 1.

The last word

The decision that matters in May is the clock, far more than the date: out early, indoors at midday, back outside for the long light. With sunrise at 6:38 a.m., a morning on the 8.4 miles of hiking trail at Little Manatee River State Park, which the state counts at 109 parking spaces, fits comfortably before the heat builds. Then comes a swim in 82.9°F water, and a Riverwalk dinner that still has daylight at eight.
