September finds Tampa still in full summer. The heat has not broken, afternoon thunderstorms build over the bay, and the Gulf off the barrier beaches is warm enough to wade into without a flinch. The city keeps its easy shape all the same: a riverside path downtown, a free streetcar out to Ybor City, and state parks with canoe launches just outside town.
September also sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and the National Hurricane Center puts the season’s peak on September 10, right in the middle of the month. That does not turn every day into a gamble. It does change how you book, what you pack and whether a four-week shift to August or October would serve your trip better.

Flights come into Tampa International (TPA), which the FAA classes as a large hub after it boarded 12,075,591 passengers in calendar year 2024. Once in town, a HART bus ride costs $2.00 by Flamingo Fares card, app or contactless card, and the service day is capped at $4.00: board twice and every later ride that day is free. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information set Tampa’s 1991-2020 September normals at an average high of 90.2°F, an average low of 75.3°F and 6.09 inches of precipitation. These are station normals from one real thermometer, USW00012842, logged as TAMPA INTL AP, rather than a reanalysis grid cell. The gauge sits at the airport, inland on the bay side rather than on a beach, so every figure here describes the airport’s weather.
At least a tenth of an inch falls on 8.2 days in an average September, a little over one day in four. Spread across those days, the 6.09 inches average about three-quarters of an inch each, and only 1.9 days reach an inch or more. Florida’s wet season runs on afternoon thunderstorms, as our Florida best-time guide sets out, so put beach and trail time before lunch and keep an indoor plan from 2 p.m. onward.
Between the average high and low lies a gap of 14.9°F, and even the 75.3°F low is shirt-sleeve weather at midnight. Pack for heat at both ends of the day: breathable shirts, quick-dry shorts, a hat, sunscreen and a compact umbrella for the storms. Add one thin layer for air-conditioned museums, restaurants and the flight home.
On September 15 the sun rises at 7:14 a.m. and sets at 7:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, for about 12 hours 21 minutes of light, converted from the UTC times published by sunrise-sunset.org. A Riverwalk stroll at 7 p.m. still has daylight, and a dinner table at 8 p.m. is already under the dark.
Can you swim in Tampa in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Tampa averages 87.2°F in September, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a 24-hour average, and a table built on round-the-clock means will show a lower number. It also comes from a different source and period than the NOAA airport normals.
At 87.2°F the water sits only 3.0°F below the 90.2°F average air high, so wading in brings no shock and little cooling. Swim in the morning or after 5 p.m., drink more water than feels necessary, and reapply sunscreen after each dip. Children who balk at cool water can stay in far longer than they would in an October sea.
We found no wind or wave series for Tampa in September, so we give no figure for chop or swell. A named storm in the Gulf can change beach conditions within a day, and the season peaks on September 10. How busy is Tampa in September? Crowds and prices
We found no hotel occupancy or room-rate series for Tampa, so we rank no month cheap or expensive. The calendar does tell you something: September falls in Florida’s wet season and inside the hurricane window, outside the November-to-April dry season that built the state’s winter trade. Book a rate you can cancel. With the season peaking on September 10, a storm in the Gulf can disrupt flights and beach days, and a refundable room turns that into a change of dates. We have no lead-time data for Tampa hotels, so we give no number of weeks. Check the National Hurricane Center’s tropical outlook in the week before you fly.
Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid alongside the 6% state sales tax, so those two lines alone add 12% to the room rate. Pay extra for flexibility and nothing else. A refundable room or a changeable airfare usually costs more than the locked-in version, and in the month of the hurricane peak it decides whether a storm means rescheduling or losing the money.
Things to do in Tampa in September
Gulf water at 87.2°F makes September a month for long, lukewarm swims. Honeymoon Island State Park, on the Gulf northwest of Tampa, is the beach day to plan around: the state counts 2,021 parking spaces, one designated swimming area and 1,671 feet of boardwalk there. By October the same water is 7.5°F cooler.
Hillsborough River State Park, northeast of the city, has 350 parking spaces, three canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail. Little Manatee River State Park counts 109 spaces, one launch and 8.4 miles of trail, and Alafia River State Park 50 spaces, one launch and 1.2 miles. In town, the Tampa Riverwalk runs 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River past the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children’s Museum and the Tampa Bay History Center, while Ybor City Museum State Park adds 311 feet of boardwalk. We could not read entrance fees or opening hours from the park operators, so check both before you drive.
North of Tampa, three spring parks sit within reach: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, with 255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park with 197, and Crystal River Preserve State Park with 77. Their water holds its temperature all year, though we did not verify the figure. The air above it moves: against a 90.2°F average high, a September spring swim is pure relief. The TECO Line Streetcar costs nothing to ride, and HART and the City of Tampa both publish the fare as free. It runs 2.7 miles from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City every 15 minutes, handy when a storm cuts a walk short. The Riverwalk is a public path, so the stretch linking Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Amalie Arena and Water Works Park is free too. Tampa in September: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the 7:14 a.m. sunrise. Walk the Riverwalk from Water Works Park toward Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park while the air is at its coolest, then move indoors by late morning to the Tampa Museum of Art or the Tampa Bay History Center, both on the path (check their hours when you book). Early afternoon, ride the free streetcar to Ybor City for lunch and the Ybor City Museum State Park boardwalk, and stay under a roof while the storms pass. Back downtown by 7 p.m., you still have 35 minutes of light before the 7:35 p.m. sunset.
Give day two to the water. Drive out early to Hillsborough River State Park and put in at one of its three launches, or head for the designated swimming area at Honeymoon Island, and be back in the car by early afternoon. If the morning turns wet, swap the days: museums and the streetcar first, the river or the beach on the clearer morning. NOAA’s airport normals put September’s 90.2°F high just 1.0°F below August and 4.6°F above October. Rain falls in steeper steps: 9.03 inches in August, 6.09 in September, 2.34 in October, with wet days dropping from 11.2 to 8.2 to 4.4. The Gulf, measured separately by the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024, cools from 89.2°F to 87.2°F to 79.7°F, a 2.0°F slip into September and a 7.5°F drop into October.
Moving four weeks earlier buys water 2.0°F warmer and costs three extra wet days and 2.94 more inches of rain, with the hurricane window already open. Moving four weeks later trades 7.5°F of Gulf warmth for nights 6.1°F cooler, 3.8 fewer wet days and 3.75 fewer inches. October still falls inside the season that runs to November 30, and NOAA places most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so the later date cuts the rain without clearing the tropics. Is September a good time to visit Tampa?
Yes, if the trip centers on water and flexibility: swimmers, paddlers who start early, cruise passengers with a buffer day, and anyone happy to spend stormy afternoons in museums. No, if you want long midday hikes, a non-refundable wedding weekend or a date you cannot move when a storm forms in the Gulf.
Pick October if the answer is no. Its 85.6°F high and 4.4 wet days turn the 8.4 miles of trail at Little Manatee River into a comfortable morning, and the Gulf at 79.7°F remains swimmable for most adults.
Of the three months, only September pairs Gulf water above 87°F with fewer than nine wet days.
The last word
Book the refundable room, then plan every September day around the storms: outdoors by 7:30 a.m., indoors by early afternoon, back on the river for the last light. If the vacation ends on a ship, Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines, so you fly in and sail out of the same city. In the weeks around the September 10 peak, landing the day before departure keeps a delayed flight from costing you the cruise.
