Tampa in March: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Itinerary

Tampa in March lands on a kind stretch of the calendar. The thermometer at Tampa International Airport averages 77.8°F in the afternoon, measurable rain turns up on 3.4 days of the month, and the Atlantic hurricane season does not open until June 1. The water has warmed as well: sea-surface readings off Tampa average 73.9°F, up from 66.6°F in February.

You have already picked the city, so the open question is the date. March brings warm afternoons, cool evenings, water that suits a brisk swim, and the weeks when many US schools break for spring. Neighborhoods and hotels live in our Florida where-to-stay guide, the full list of sights in things to do in Florida, and the months on either side in Tampa in February and Tampa in April.

Think twice before: planning long, lazy swims. The 73.9°F sea figure is an average of daily maxima, so the round-the-clock water runs a shade cooler.

Tampa International (TPA) boarded 12,075,591 passengers in 2024, and the FAA classes it a large hub. Routes and airfares sit in our Florida flights guide, and the car question in getting around Florida. Every climate figure here comes from that same airport, so read the normals below as readings from its thermometer.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publish the 1991–2020 normals for station USW00012842, listed as TAMPA INTL AP. That is one real thermometer at the airport, inland on the bay side, rather than a reanalysis grid cell blending land and water. Its March averages a high of 77.8°F and a low of 59.3°F, with 2.52 inches of precipitation across the month. Beaches on the Gulf can read differently from the gauge, so treat these as airport conditions.

Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.4 days in an average March, about one day in nine. A soaking of an inch or more averages 0.7 day, fewer than one per March. A wet day usually means shifting plans, not losing the trip: keep the Tampa Museum of Art or the Tampa Bay History Center as the swap for an outdoor morning, and check the forecast the night before a park day.

Between the 77.8°F high and the 59.3°F low sits a spread of 18.5°F. Short sleeves at noon on the Riverwalk and a sweater for dinner in Ybor City can belong to the same date. Pack a light jacket or fleece, closed shoes for evenings, and sunscreen for the middle of the day.

On March 15 Tampa gets about 12 hours 3 minutes of daylight. Sunrise comes at 7:37 a.m. and sunset at 7:39 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time, converted from the source’s UTC times. With light lasting past 7:30 p.m., a full outdoor day still leaves room for the waterfront at dusk. Book any sunset cruise or riverside table for about 7 p.m.

Can you swim in Tampa in March? Sea temperature

Sea-surface temperature off Tampa averages 73.9°F in March, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. That number is the mean of each day’s warmest reading, so a 24-hour average of the same water comes out a shade cooler. It also comes from a different source and period than the airport’s air normals, and we keep the two apart.

For most adults, 73.9°F feels cool on entry and fine once you are moving. Children and anyone planning to float for a long stretch will be happier in a rash guard or a shorty wetsuit. On a 77.8°F afternoon the air runs only about four degrees warmer than the water, so bring a dry layer for the walk back up the beach. Honeymoon Island State Park, on the Gulf northwest of Tampa, has a designated swimming area.

We could not source wind or swell data for March off Tampa, so we give no figure for either. Check the National Weather Service marine forecast for Tampa Bay the evening before a beach day, and move the swim to another afternoon if a cold front is due.

How busy is Tampa in March? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel-occupancy series or monthly room rates for Tampa, so we rank no month cheap or expensive. The calendar tells part of the story instead: March falls in Florida’s dry season, laid out in the best time to visit Florida, sits outside hurricane season, and overlaps many school spring breaks. Our Florida overview lists spring break among the state’s crowd peaks.

We have no booking-curve data for Tampa, so we give no week count. If your dates hang on a school break, reserve a refundable room as soon as the flights are set, then recheck the rate closer to departure and rebook if it drops. Budget lines for lodging, food and cars are in what a Florida trip costs.

Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. Read any quoted nightly rate as a price before those two lines. We did not verify other local surtaxes, so we give no combined total.

Spending more on a rental car changes March more than any upgrade to the room. The spring parks and Honeymoon Island sit well outside downtown, and March’s mild afternoons are the ones to spend there. Rent for the days you leave the city and skip it for the city days, when parking downtown is its own cost.

Things to do in Tampa in March

March lets you spend the middle of the day outdoors. A 77.8°F afternoon average suits a noon paddle or a trail walk that April’s 83.0°F makes harder going, and the 7:39 p.m. sunset leaves the evening for the river. Plan the parks for the afternoon and the city for the edges of the day.

The state’s 2024 facilities count gives Hillsborough River State Park 3 canoe, kayak and tube launches, 5 miles of hiking trail and 350 parking spaces. Little Manatee River State Park has 8.4 miles of trail and 109 spaces, and Alafia River State Park 1.2 miles and 50 spaces. In town, the Tampa Riverwalk links the Tampa Museum of Art, the Glazer Children’s Museum, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Water Works Park. Ybor City Museum State Park has 311 feet of boardwalk, and Honeymoon Island counts 2,021 spaces and 1,671 feet of boardwalk.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (255 parking spaces and a designated swimming area), Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (197 spaces) and Crystal River Preserve State Park (77) all sit within reach of Tampa. Their water holds its temperature all year, while March air at the airport swings from 59.3°F to 77.8°F. Swim in the afternoon, when the air is warmest, and bring a warm layer for climbing out. Manatee trips from Crystal River have their own guide, swimming with manatees in Florida.

The TECO Line Streetcar is free to ride, as both HART and the City of Tampa publish. It covers 2.7 miles from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City, with a car every 15 minutes. Ride it out to Ybor for dinner and back after dark with no car to park.

Tampa in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one stays in the city. Start on the Riverwalk around 8 a.m., a little after the 7:37 sunrise, while the air is at its cool end. Spend the late morning at the Tampa Bay History Center or the Tampa Museum of Art (we could not verify their hours, so check before you go), then lunch downtown. Give the warm afternoon to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Water Works Park. Be back by the river for the 7:39 p.m. sunset, then take the free streetcar to Ybor City for dinner.

Day two leaves town by car. Paddle from one of Hillsborough River State Park’s launches in the cool morning and walk part of its trail, or drive north to Weeki Wachee for an afternoon swim. If rain arrives, move the museums from day one into day two and leave the car parked. HART buses cost $2.00 a ride with a Flamingo Fares card, the app or a contactless card, and the day caps at $4.00, so every ride after the second is free.

Is March a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes, for most trips. March suits walkers, paddlers, couples building days around museums and dinner, and anyone pairing Tampa with a spring park, with 77.8°F afternoons, 3.4 rain days and no hurricane season. It suits a beach-and-pool family less well, since 73.9°F water is brisk, and it suits anyone avoiding spring-break company least of all.

If the water is your sticking point, go in April, when the sea averages 77.1°F and the rain count holds at 3.4 days. If the crowds are the problem and cooler water is acceptable, February’s 74.0°F afternoons and 3.6 rain days keep most of March’s comfort. Both months have their own guides, Tampa in April and Tampa in February.

Of the three months, March alone brings the afternoon air and the sea within four degrees of each other, at 77.8°F and 73.9°F.

The last word

Pick March if your Tampa is a walking and paddling trip, and rent the car only for the days beyond the Riverwalk. If the vacation continues at sea, the city works as a starting line too: Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines. Fly into TPA, give yourself two March days in town, and sail from the city itself.
