Tampa in January: Weather, Sea Temperature, Room Tax and a Two-Day Plan

Tampa reaches 71.3°F on a normal January afternoon and falls to 52.8°F before sunrise, a spread of 18.5 degrees that catches out anyone who packed for Florida and only Florida. The Gulf is colder still, averaging 63.0°F. Sunshine is generous, the parks walk well from breakfast to dusk, and the water is the one part of the trip you have to plan around rather than assume.

January also sits outside the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30 on the National Hurricane Center’s calendar, with its peak around September 10, so the storm calculation behind an autumn booking simply does not apply. The cost shows up in a single line of the normals below: 63.0°F of sea, against 66.7°F in December and 66.6°F in February.

Two of those questions belong elsewhere. Hotel neighborhoods and rental-car logistics live on the where to stay and getting around guides, and the twelve-month view of the state is in Florida’s best time to visit. January’s own numbers start with a thermometer at the airport.

Tampa weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from one thermometer rather than a grid cell: NOAA station USW00012842, listed as TAMPA INTL AP, on the 1991-2020 monthly normals. It records an average January high of 71.3°F, an average low of 52.8°F and 2.65 inches of precipitation. The gauge sits at the airport, inland on the bay side rather than out on the sand, so a beachfront morning will read a little differently from the number in the table.

Most of those 2.65 inches arrive on a handful of dates. NOAA counts 4.4 days in an average January with at least 0.10 inch, roughly one wet day in seven, and 0.8 days with an inch or more, so a genuine soaking turns up in about four Januarys out of five. Book the outdoor day first and keep one indoor swap in reserve.

The 18.5-degree gap between two o’clock and dawn does more to your packing than the averages do. Tampa records 0.5 nights at or below 32°F in an average January, so a freezing night arrives in roughly one year out of two. A fleece plus a windproof layer covers the evening, a t-shirt covers the afternoon, and the jacket belongs in the daypack rather than the suitcase.

Daylight on January 15 runs 10 hours 36 minutes. Converted to Eastern time, the sun comes up at 7:20 a.m. and sets at 5:57 p.m., so a trail started at 4 p.m. finishes in the dark. Paddling, hiking and anything that needs you back at a parking lot before nightfall wants a noon start at the very latest.

Can you swim in Tampa in January? The sea sits at 63.0°F

63.0°F is the January average for the sea surface off Tampa, from the Open-Meteo Marine API across 2015 to 2024. Read the fine print on it: that average is built from daily maxima, not from 24-hour means, so it runs a shade warmer than the water you actually meet at half past seven in the morning. The afternoon number is the friendly version.

Against an average high of 71.3°F, the water sits 8.3 degrees below the air, and it is the air that does the recovering afterward. Most people wade, a few swim briskly, and children last about as long as it takes to say the temperature out loud. A heated hotel pool, or a wetsuit if you rent a board, changes the afternoon. The open sea alone will not.

On wind and swell we came up empty: no monthly wave or wind series for Tampa Bay could be read, and no figure is invented in its place. The documented alternative is inland. Three spring parks within reach hold their water temperature all year: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park with 255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park with 197 spaces, Crystal River Preserve State Park with 77. How busy is Tampa in January? Crowds, room tax and booking

No monthly occupancy figure and no hotel-rate series for Tampa could be sourced, so January gets no ranking against the other eleven months here. The calendar does state one thing plainly: the month falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30 per the National Hurricane Center, with activity concentrated between mid-August and mid-October. Nothing booked for January needs a storm clause behind it.

Tampa is a cruise homeport rather than a port of call. Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five lines, so a share of the downtown beds belongs to people flying in one day and sailing the next, and those nights follow sailing schedules rather than sightseeing. We have no booking-window data to convert into weeks of lead time. If a ship is your reason for coming, the sailing date fixes the hotel night before anything else does.

Hillsborough County levies a 6.0 percent transient rental tax, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6 percent state sales tax, per Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT read on September 8, 2026. One upgrade changes this month more than any other: heated water. With the sea at 63.0°F and afternoons at 71.3°F, a property with a heated pool gives you the swim the Gulf will not, and it beats breakfast, a view or a balcony as a booking filter in January. Everything else you can skip and barely notice.

Things to do in Tampa in January: Hillsborough River, Little Manatee River and Ybor City

Of the three months around it, January hands over the coolest air: 71.3°F against 73.9°F in December and 74.0°F in February. Those two and a half degrees decide the order of a day here. Trails and paddling come first, water second or not at all, and a long walk that would be a sweat in other seasons finishes with the shirt dry.

Florida counts its parks facility by facility in the 2024 Recreational Facilities Inventory. Hillsborough River State Park holds 350 parking spaces, three canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail. Little Manatee River State Park carries 8.4 miles of trail against just 109 spaces. Alafia River State Park is the small one: 50 spaces, a single launch, 1.2 miles. In town, Ybor City Museum State Park counts 311 feet of boardwalk.

Water and air move on different clocks. The spring parks hold their temperature through the year while the air above them does not, so in January the cold part is the walk back to the car, not the swim. At Weeki Wachee, with its one designated swimming area and 255 spaces, and after a 52.8°F dawn, you want the towel in hand before you get in rather than folded in the trunk.

On fees and hours we were blocked: the operators’ pages either refused a machine read or rendered only in a browser when we checked on September 11, 2026, so no entrance fee and no opening time appears here. Tampa in January: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts with the jacket on. Sunrise at 7:20 a.m. means a 9 a.m. arrival at Hillsborough River State Park catches the air still climbing out of the fifties, exactly when 5 miles of trail are pleasant rather than warm. Paddle from one of the three launches once the sun is high, eat late, then give the afternoon to Ybor City, where the museum park’s 311 feet of boardwalk make a short flat end to a long day. Be off the trail before 5:57 p.m.

Day two belongs to Little Manatee River State Park and its 8.4 miles, the longest walk in this set and the one that needs the full 10 hours 36 minutes. If the day lands on one of January’s 4.4 wet ones, drop to Alafia River State Park with its 1.2 miles and 50 spaces, or drive north to the springs, where rain changes the drive and not the water temperature. Inch-or-more days average 0.8 per January, so a full washout stays the exception.

Tampa in January vs December and February

January’s 71.3°F average high runs 2.6 degrees below December’s and 2.7 below February’s, and its nights are colder by 3.1 and 2.7 degrees respectively. Its 4.4 days of measurable rain beat both neighbors’ 3.6, even though the monthly totals sit within a tenth of an inch of each other at 2.65, 2.56 and 2.62. The water is the sharpest gap of all, 63.0°F against 66.7 and 66.6, and those sea figures come from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024 rather than from the NOAA station.

Shifting four weeks forward buys 3.6 degrees of sea, 2.7 degrees of afternoon air and 0.8 fewer wet days. Shifting four weeks back buys nearly the same thing, 3.7 degrees of water and 2.6 of air. Either move costs you the cool air that makes a full 8.4-mile day comfortable, and if school dates hold you in place the question is academic anyway. Is January a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes, if your Tampa is parks, paddling, museums and food. Afternoons at 71.3°F with 4.4 wet days across the month is close to ideal for covering 5 or 8 miles on foot and still wanting dinner. No, if the trip was built around swimming in the Gulf. At 63.0°F the sea allows a quick dip and very little after that, and the fix is a heated pool or a different month.

February is the shift to make for swimmers: 74.0°F by day, 66.6°F in the water, 3.6 wet days instead of 4.4. December lands within a tenth of a degree of February on water at 66.7°F, so either neighbor answers a swimmer better than January manages to. Nothing in the air normals separates those two months by more than a tenth either.

January’s edge over both is the air, coolest of the three, and that is what turns the 8.4 miles at Little Manatee River into a comfortable day rather than a slog.

The last word

Decide the water question first and the rest of January arranges itself: with a heated pool on the booking, the month is a bargain of daylight, trail miles and 12 percent tax you now know about; without one, move the dates to February. One more number before the flight goes on the card. Tampa International boarded 12,075,591 passengers in calendar year 2024, a large hub in the FAA’s classification, so a January arrival meets a full-size airport with full-size schedules rather than a seasonal one.
