Tampa in February: Weather, Sea Temperature and Crowd Levels

An average February afternoon in Tampa reaches 74.0°F, and the night before it dropped to 55.5°F. The whole month collects 2.62 inches of rain across 3.6 days wet enough to measure. That is the shape of Florida’s dry half, November through April, and it is why a February weekend here wants a fleece at breakfast and short sleeves by two o’clock.

What the month withholds is the water. The Gulf off Tampa averages 66.6°F in February, daylight on the 15th runs about 11 hours 15 minutes, and the sun is gone by 6:21 pm Eastern. Four weeks later the same sea reads 73.9°F. If that gap decides your trip, March is the page to read next, and January is the cooler, wetter alternative.

February is a dry-season month in a state that runs on two seasons, and the state-level case for that sits in the best-time guide. The car-and-toll layer belongs to getting around Florida, the budget tiers to what a Florida trip costs. Everything below is dated to this month and to this city.

Days with 1.00 in or more 0.8

Every figure here comes from one thermometer rather than a grid cell: NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012842, “TAMPA INTL AP”. The gauge sits at the airport, inland on the bay side rather than out on a barrier island, so beach readings can run differently from the table above. The normals themselves are plain enough: 74.0°F by day, 55.5°F overnight, 2.62 inches of precipitation for the month.

Rain arrives as an interruption rather than a pattern. Of an average February, 3.6 days record at least 0.10 inch, roughly one day in eight, and 0.8 day records an inch or more, which works out to about four real soakings every five Februaries. The rest of the month’s 2.62 inches falls in amounts too small to reorganize an afternoon.

Between the 74.0°F afternoon and the 55.5°F dawn sit 18.5 degrees, inside the same 24 hours. One fleece or light jacket covers breakfast and the hour after sunset, short sleeves cover the middle of the day, and a packable rain shell covers the wet days without a second bag. Visitors who pack only for Florida-in-the-brochure are the ones buying sweatshirts on day two.

Daylight on February 15 runs about 11 hours 15 minutes. Converted from UTC to Eastern time, sunrise falls at 7:06 am and sunset at 6:21 pm. Plan the last outdoor stop to finish before 6:21 pm, because the drive back from the river parks happens in the dark otherwise.

Can you swim in Tampa in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Tampa averages 66.6°F in February, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine API as a 2015-2024 mean of daily maxima. That distinction matters: the figure is the warm end of each day, a shade above what a 24-hour mean would give, so anything you read here is the friendly version of the water.

In practice, 66.6°F makes for a short unheated swim for most adults and a shorter one for children. The Gulf beaches still work as beaches, for walking, for shelling, for an hour with a book. Ask whether the hotel pool is heated before you book, and treat a paddle as the better water plan: Hillsborough River State Park alone counts 3 launches for canoe, kayak or tube.

We found no wind or wave series for Tampa Bay in February that we could read, and none is invented here. One dated fact does apply to the month: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, so February falls entirely outside it. No tropical watch, no storm-window insurance question, no refundable-booking calculus.

How busy is Tampa in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

February lands in the middle of Florida’s dry season, November through April, the half of the calendar the state’s winter economy is built on. No monthly occupancy series or room-rate series for Tampa was available to us, so nothing here ranks the month against the other eleven on price. What is countable: TPA boarded 12,075,591 passengers in calendar year 2024, a large hub by FAA classification.

Tampa is also a cruise homeport rather than a port of call. Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five lines, and homeport passengers fly in the day before and sleep locally, so weekend rooms near the port answer to sailing dates as well as to tourism. Check your dates against the cruise schedule before you book downtown, and reserve a specific property roughly six weeks out (est.) if the neighborhood matters to you.

Then the tax. Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid with Florida’s 6% state sales tax on Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT. A quoted nightly rate therefore carries 12% on top before the property adds any resort fee or parking charge of its own.

Every state park named below sits outside downtown, and we could not read a single bus or train fare for Tampa: HART’s site returned a 404 on September 11, 2026, and PSTA’s did not respond at all. No amount is invented in its place. Put the extra money into the rental car and its parking, the way our getting-around guide and the cost page set it out.

Things to do in Tampa in February: Ybor City, the river parks and the springs

Long trail days are what February hands you and August does not. A 74.0°F afternoon with 3.6 wet days across the month puts distance back on the table, and no tropical system sits on the forecast. The same walk in July happens under afternoon storms and a heat index nobody schedules around twice.

The state counts its own facilities, so the sizes are firm. Hillsborough River State Park: 350 parking spaces, 5 miles of hiking trail, 3 canoe, kayak and tube launches. Little Manatee River State Park: 109 spaces, 8.4 miles of trail, 1 launch. Alafia River State Park: 50 spaces, 1.2 miles of trail, 1 launch. In town, Ybor City Museum State Park counts 311 feet of boardwalk.

Within driving reach sit the spring parks, and their water holds its temperature all year while the air above them does not. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park counts 255 parking spaces and one designated swimming area, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs 197 spaces, Crystal River Preserve 77. In July a spring feels cold against the air. In February it meets a 74.0°F afternoon instead, so the swim is short and the boardwalk is long, as the manatee guide lays out.

On what any of it costs to enter, we are empty-handed: no entrance fee and no opening hour for these parks could be read from their operators on September 11, 2026, and nothing here is labeled free on a guess. Check the gate price and the hours on the park’s own page the week you go.

Tampa in February: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts at 7:06 am, with the air still near 55.5°F: Ybor City first, where the 311 feet of state-park boardwalk make a cool-hour walk through the old cigar district. Drive northeast by mid-morning to Hillsborough River State Park, park among its 350 spaces, and take the 5 miles of trail before lunch. Put a boat in from one of the 3 launches at the 74.0°F end of the afternoon, and be off the water before the 6:21 pm sunset.

Day two goes south to Little Manatee River State Park, where 8.4 miles of trail and 109 parking spaces make a full February morning, with Alafia River State Park as the short version at 1.2 miles and 50 spaces. If the sky turns, the odds favor a brief event rather than a lost day: only 0.8 day in an average February brings an inch or more. Keep Ybor City for that hour and the trail for the clear one.

Tampa in February vs January and March

Measure January February March
Average high 71.3°F 74.0°F 77.8°F
Average low 52.8°F 55.5°F 59.3°F
Precipitation 2.65 in 2.62 in 2.52 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 4.4 3.6 3.4
Sea surface (daily maxima) 63.0°F 66.6°F 73.9°F

Air moves in even steps across the three: February runs 2.7°F above January by day and 3.8°F below March, with the overnight lows tracking the same 2.7 and 3.8 degrees. Rain barely moves at all, 2.65 then 2.62 then 2.52 inches, though the wet-day count drops from 4.4 to 3.6 between January and February. The sea is where the three months separate: 63.0°F, then 66.6°F, then 73.9°F, a 7.3-degree jump into March against 3.6 into February.

Shifting four weeks forward buys that 7.3°F of water, a 77.8°F afternoon and 0.2 fewer wet days. It costs you the quiet, since March is when spring break lands on Florida’s beach towns, as our Florida orientation spells out. Shifting four weeks back saves nothing on rain, takes 2.7°F off the afternoon and 3.6°F off the sea, and adds nearly a full wet day to the month.

Is February a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes for anyone who walks, paddles, drives or eats their way through a city: 74.0°F afternoons, 3.6 measurable rain days, and nothing tropical to track. No for anyone whose trip is built around swimming off a Gulf beach, because a 66.6°F sea taken at its daily warmest gets in the way of that idea from the first morning.

If the swim is the point, move to March and accept the company: 73.9°F water, 77.8°F air, 2.52 inches of rain across 3.4 wet days. Our March page carries those normals in full, with the same station behind them.

What neither neighbor matches is the pairing February makes: an afternoon warm enough for 8.4 miles of trail at Little Manatee, over a dawn cool enough at 55.5°F to start early without regretting it.

The last word

Book the car before you book the room, because the mileage that makes this month worth a flight, 8.4 miles at Little Manatee and 5 along the Hillsborough, sits out of town in every direction and no readable transit fare reaches it. One last line from the airport gauge: an average February records 0.1 nights at 32°F or below. The fleece is for the 7:06 am start, not for frost.
