Flights to the Bahamas: Airports, Airlines, Nassau Preclearance and Boarding Rules

At a gate in Florida, a traveler studies a departures board and wonders which island the boarding pass actually points to. Nassau handles the largest share of arrivals, but Abaco, Grand Bahama and the other islands each have their own airstrips and their own airlines. The answer is that you can fly into many islands, and which one you pick shapes everything that follows.

Which airports in the Bahamas can you fly into from the United States?

Yes, you have a wide choice: the Bahamas has 20 international airports, plus dozens of smaller public and private airports, and visitors can arrive on commercial and charter flights. The islands are separated by sea, so the airport you choose decides which island you wake up on.

Lynden Pindling International Airport is the largest airport in the Bahamas and the largest international gateway into the country. It sits in western New Providence, near the capital city of Nassau, and it was known as Nassau International Airport before it took the name of Lynden Pindling, the first prime minister of the Bahamas. It is a hub for Bahamasair, Western Air, Flamingo Air, Southern Air Charter and Pineapple Air.

Nassau and New Providence

For most travelers headed to Nassau, Paradise Island or Cable Beach, this is the airport. The former U.S. terminal was renovated to become the U.S./International Arrivals Terminal, a project with a budget of $127.9 million, and the airport sits only 16 feet above sea level on a flat stretch of the island.

It is also the place where Nassau Preclearance happens on the way home, which is covered in its own section. Nassau is the point from which Bahamasair connects to other islands, including Spring Point on Acklins on Saturdays and Crooked Island on Wednesdays.

Grand Bahama and Freeport

Grand Bahama International Airport serves Freeport and Lucaya. It is relatively close to all the major cities of the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, which suits travelers coming from that side of the country. Its runway is 11,020 feet long and can take the largest aircraft in service.

The airport was privately owned until the government of the Bahamas bought it on April 29, 2021, for one Bahamian dollar. Its grounds adjoin the Freeport Harbour Company, and together they operate as the Sea Air Business Centre.

Abaco: Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay

Great Abaco has two airports with flights from the U.S.: Marsh Harbour, the gateway for Hope Town and Elbow Cay, and Treasure Cay, on the northern end. Flights come from Florida, Texas, North Carolina and New York, from a small group of airlines described in the airline section.

Bahamasair lists a fare from Marsh Harbour to West Palm Beach starting at $226.99. Between the two Abaco airports, Bahamasair runs domestic flights on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and LeAir links Treasure Cay with Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands and Mangrove Cay in Andros on the same days.

Private planes and island hopping

Visitors can also arrive on private planes, and the Bahamas has near perfect flying conditions and plenty of airports and island landing strips for private pilots. Once you are in the islands, you can hop between them on scheduled and chartered flights, by private boat, or with Bahamas Ferries.

Which airlines fly to the Bahamas?

A mix of major U.S. carriers, international airlines, the national carrier and small regional operators fly to the Bahamas, depending on the island. Into Nassau, the airlines listed for Lynden Pindling International Airport are Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Bahamasair, British Airways, Caribbean Airlines, Copa Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Airlines serving Nassau

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are the two U.S. majors on that list, joined by Alaska Airlines. Air Canada, British Airways, Caribbean Airlines and Copa Airlines bring travelers from Canada, Britain, the Caribbean region and Latin America. Bahamasair, the national airline, is based in Nassau.

Reservation numbers are published for each: Air Canada at +1 888 247 2262, American Airlines at +1 800 433 7300, British Airways at +1 800 247 9297, Caribbean Airlines at +1 800 523 5585, Copa Airlines at +1 800 359 2672 and Delta Air Lines at +1 800 221 1212. Alaska Airlines has a customer service number for the Nassau airport at +1 242 702 7172.

Bahamasair

Bahamasair lists fares starting at $172.99 from Nassau to Fort Lauderdale, $80.50 from Nassau to North Eleuthera, $148.00 from Nassau to Providenciales and $187.00 from Nassau to Havana. From the U.S., its toll-free reservations number is 1-800-222-4262, and a Frequent Flyer Programme rewards each flight taken.

You can feel how many departure cities feed one island, from the big hubs of Miami and Charlotte to Dallas and the New York suburbs of White Plains. That range of starting points makes Abaco unusually easy to reach from several parts of the country.

What do you do at the airport when you leave the Bahamas for the U.S.?

In Nassau, you clear U.S. customs and immigration before you board, because Lynden Pindling International Airport has a CBP Preclearance facility. CBP stations officers at designated foreign airports to inspect travelers before they board U.S.-bound flights, so the Bahamas is one of the places where the border check happens on the Bahamian side.

How Preclearance works

With Preclearance, travelers bypass CBP and TSA inspections upon U.S. arrival and proceed directly to their connecting flight or destination. You land at home like a domestic passenger, which is a real convenience when you have a connection to make.

CBP has more than 600 officers and agriculture specialists stationed at 16 Preclearance locations in 6 countries. In 2025, CBP personnel stationed abroad precleared more than 22 million travelers, nearly 14.6 percent of all commercial air travelers to the United States.

The Nassau facility

Facility Address Open Phone
Nassau Preclearance Lynden Pindling International Airport, 1 Windsor Field Road, Nassau Daily, 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (242) 377-7125

Passengers departing on U.S.-bound flights should arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before their flight, which leaves room for the extra inspection step. Pre-approved Global Entry members can use self-service kiosks to complete U.S. entry processing before departure.

What you can bring home

U.S. citizens returning from abroad, including from the Bahamas, are allowed up to $800 worth of duty-free goods if they have been out of the country for at least 48 hours. As part of that exemption, they can bring back up to 40 ounces of liquor or wine duty-free.

For the security line, carry-ons follow the 3-1-1 rule: liquids, gels, creams or pastes in containers of 3.4 ounces or less, all fitting in one quart-sized clear plastic zip-top bag, one bag per passenger. Flights to other countries call for at least 2 hours at the airport. The Aerocloud app, on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, carries the latest flight information for the Nassau airport.

What do you need before you board?

You need a passport, a return or onward ticket, and possibly proof that you can support yourself during your stay. Passports are required by all persons entering the Bahamas.

Passport

The Bahamas Department of Immigration says all travellers must present a passport valid for at least six months, and passport cards will not be accepted. U.S. citizens entering as bona fide visitors for a stay not exceeding eight months do not require a Bahamian visa.

Ticket, funds and length of stay

All visitors must have a return or onward ticket, and a valid travel document that allows entry into another country as applicable. Visitors may be asked to produce evidence of sufficient funds to be self-sustaining while in the Bahamas.

Visitors may remain for a maximum of 8 months, provided they can support themselves or indicate other means of support for that period. The period stamped in the passport may vary at the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry.

Arriving by private plane or boat

Not everyone comes on a scheduled flight. Visitors can arrive on private planes and on pleasure craft, whether a schooner, a powerboat or a mega-yacht, and others come by ferry or cruise line.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

Bahamasair’s automated Exchange & Refund facility through Manage Booking is for Web Ticket customers only, which is worth remembering if you booked through an agent. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so flights in those months can be affected by weather. Visitors for work or short studies under 14 days can use the Trusted Traveller Programme in place of a work permit.
