Three days is the length Montego Bay handles well. It is long enough to swim in the city, run the coast road east to Rose Hall and Falmouth, and still keep the river side of town for a morning. It is short enough that changing hotels halfway would cost an afternoon of it. The order matters more than the roster: one direction per day, the long outings kept away from the flight, and half a day left with nothing written on it.

Three days in Montego Bay, in order

Day 1 · The city, on foot. Land, drop the bags, and do nothing that requires a driver. Doctor’s Cave Beach Club and Cornwall Beach beside it give a reef-flattened swim inside the city limits, and Gloucester Avenue takes the evening from there: patty windows, duty-free counters, the craft market at the far end. Day 2 · East, to Rose Hall and Falmouth. Spend the whole day in one direction. Rose Hall Great House stands above the highway with its Annie Palmer story and a candlelit night version of the tour, and the fairways of Cinnamon Hill and White Witch sit in the same stretch for anyone who travelled with clubs. Carry on to Falmouth for the Georgian storefronts, then close after dark at the Luminous Lagoon, which only performs at night and so finishes this day instead of claiming one of its own.

Day 3 · West, the Great River, then back to the sand. Rafting on the Great River and the zipline course behind it use a morning without taking you far from the bay, which leaves the afternoon for whichever beach won on day one. Montego Bay in the rain: what to do with a spare half-day

Something in a three-day sequence slips. A boat runs late, a beach afternoon gets rained off, a great-house tour is fuller than expected. Keeping half a day unclaimed, most naturally the second half of day three, means the slipped item has somewhere to land rather than being crushed into an evening. Book it on the morning of, or not at all.

When it rains, the useful moves are indoors and close: the great-house interiors, the duty-free counters along Gloucester Avenue, the craft stalls under their roofs, a lunch that runs long. Montego Bay itinerary mistakes: a packed first day, cruise-day Falmouth, departure-morning excursions

The first mistake is writing day one before knowing the arrival time. Flights reach MBJ across the whole day, immigration and the transfer take what they take, and a plan that assumed a morning start turns into a rushed evening. Landing day earns a swim, a walk and dinner within a few blocks. Nothing more is needed on it.

The second is aiming at Falmouth on a cruise day. When a ship calls at the pier, the Georgian core and the craft stalls carry that traffic all at once. We did not verify a call schedule for this page, so check the port’s own calendar before fixing day 2, and if a ship is in, swap the east day and the west day. The order was never sacred, only the principle of one direction at a time.

The third is scheduling anything long on the morning of the flight. A river trip or a boat leaves your departure hostage to the coast road, whose habits the driving guide describes in detail. Give the last morning to the beach gate and the strip, both of which you can leave in ten steps.

Four days or more in Montego Bay: where the day trips start

Three days in this city is a specific holiday rather than a shortened one: a reef beach a few streets from your room, a great house on its hill east of town, a river to the west, and a bay you cross after dark to watch the water light up behind the boat.

By the third morning the strip reads without a map: the patty window open before the beach gate, umbrellas carried down in pairs, taxi drivers who know the arrivals board by heart. Three days is enough to stop checking street names on Gloucester Avenue, which is more than most travellers ever take from a city they only cross on the way somewhere else.
