SOUTH WALTON · DECEMBER · FLORIDA PANHANDLE
An average December afternoon in South Walton tops out at 65.6°F, and the sun is gone by 4:47 pm. The Gulf still reads 65.9°F, warmer than the air you walk out into at breakfast. That puts the month in a specific slot on the Panhandle calendar: 26 miles of sand you can walk end to end, five state parks without summer heat, and water most people will put their feet in rather than their shoulders.
Hurricane season closed on November 30, so the tropical question is off the table until June. Two other numbers take its place: 4.72 inches of rain, the largest total of the three winter months on either side of December, and 47.5°F as the average night. Which of the sixteen beach neighborhoods suits you is a separate question, and our South Walton guide takes that one.

SOUTH WALTON · DECEMBER
December gives you 65.6°F afternoons, a Gulf averaging 65.9°F and a closed hurricane season, in exchange for 4:47 pm sunsets and the wettest total of the three winter months.
AVG HIGH 65.6°F · AVG LOW 47.5°F · SEA 65.9°F · 6.5 RAIN DAYS · SUNSET 4:47 PM CST
Go for: the 30A corridor on a bike at 65.6°F, five state parks with no summer heat, and Florida’s 15 coastal dune lakes at their most walkable.
Think twice before: planning a swimming week. The 65.9°F sea figure is an average of daily maxima, and 1.2 December nights fall to 32°F or below.

Sixteen beach neighborhoods share one shoreline here, from Miramar Beach in the west to Inlet Beach at the county line, and December gives every one of them the same weather. Every figure here carries a named source: the air and rain come from a NOAA station, the water from a marine record, both identified below. What the date changes is the water you can stand, the daylight left after 4:47 pm, and the 11% that goes on top of a nightly rate.

The thermometer behind these numbers sits at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, station USW00053853, and NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals give December an average high of 65.6°F there and an average low of 47.5°F. NOAA measures that with an instrument on a runway rather than with a modeled grid cell. Forecast apps often serve the gridded version instead, and the two do not always agree on the overnight low, which is the figure that decides what you wear at dinner.
Rain totals 4.72 inches across the month, the biggest of the three winter months here, and it arrives in few sittings. In an average December, 6.5 days record 0.10 inch or more, roughly one day in five, and 1.7 of those record a full inch or more. Over a week on the coast, plan on five or six days you can spend outside and one that needs a fallback, with about two days in the whole month heavy enough to keep you off the sand.
18.1°F separates that average afternoon from the average night, and 1.2 nights in a normal December fall to 32°F or below. Pack across the whole range: a swimsuit you may not open, a fleece for the walk back at dusk, something windproof for the dunes. Anyone who wants to sit outside after dinner needs long sleeves every night of the month, warm ones included.
On December 15 the sun rises at 6:32 am and sets at 4:47 pm Central time, for 10 hours 15 minutes of daylight. South Walton keeps Central time while Orlando and Miami run on Eastern, so a drive across the state costs you an hour on arrival. The working effect is a short warm block: the air needs until late morning to climb into the mid-60s, and the light is already going at four.
Can you swim in South Walton in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The Gulf off South Walton averages 65.9°F in December in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read that figure with its caveat attached: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average, and well above what the water offers at 7 am. Tables built on 24-hour means will run a little cooler for the same month, and neither is wrong.
At 65.9°F, most adults last a few minutes and children stay in regardless of what the adults do. Surfers and paddlers pull on a shorty and stop thinking about it. For wading, shelling and walking a dog along the waterline, the number stops mattering entirely. Compare it against 72.4°F in November and the gap is plain: six and a half degrees is what turns an afternoon swim into a dare.
We have no wind or wave series for the Walton County shore, so we give no figures for swell or onshore breeze in December. The calendar settles the bigger question: the Atlantic season ran June 1 to November 30 and peaked on September 10, so December sits outside it. Rip currents keep their own schedule, so read the beach flag before you go in.
How busy is South Walton in December? Crowds, the lodging tax and when to book
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. The calendar still splits the month cleanly in two. The first two weeks fall inside the school term across most of the country, and the last ten days do not. Whatever rates do, that split is where December changes shape on the ground.
Booking windows are something else we could not verify, so treat the next line as editorial judgment rather than data. Dates that cross Christmas or New Year deserve to be locked by Thanksgiving, because they compete with every family whose calendar matches yours. Dates in the first ten days compete with far fewer people, and a week’s notice carries a different weight then.
Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid with the 6% state sales tax, per Florida Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT. That is 11% on the nightly rate, identical in December and in July, and it lands before any cleaning or amenity charge a property adds on its own. We could not verify those property-level fees, so we quote none.
One upgrade changes this month rather than any other: a heated pool, or failing that, a bed within walking distance of the sand. With the light ending at 4:47 pm and the Gulf at 65.9°F, the usable warm stretch runs from roughly 11 am to 4 pm. A rental that puts you on the beach in two minutes hands you all of it. A cheaper one ten minutes inland charges you that drive twice a day, out of five hours.
Things to do in South Walton in December: Grayton Beach, Topsail Hill and the coastal dune lakes

Ride the 30A corridor in December and you do it at 65.6°F instead of in summer heat, which is the one thing July cannot offer. The road was designated a Florida Scenic Highway on April 9, 2008. Its length is a genuine muddle: the state’s own scenic-highway documents give the corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, we have not seen the two reconciled, and so we quote neither as the figure.
Five state parks sit in the county: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. Along the 26 miles of sand, Florida DEP counts 63 public beach access points. The rarity lies behind the dunes, where Walton County holds Florida’s 15 coastal dune lakes, a landform documented in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon.
A spring holds its temperature through the year while the air above it does not, and that gap is what makes the season. Ponce de Leon Springs sits under air that drops from a 72.1°F November average high to 65.6°F in December, which turns the same swim from refreshing into bracing without the water moving at all. We have no measured water temperature for that spring, so we give none. The dune lakes and their outfalls, meanwhile, walk easily in air that August never provides.
The sand itself costs nothing, across 63 public access points and 26 miles, and the 4:47 pm sunset lands before dinner rather than after it, which is free entertainment on a schedule that suits children. Parking is the variable. We could not verify December parking charges at those access points, so read the signs at the lot and carry change.
South Walton in December: a two-day itinerary
Day one, built around the light. Sunrise at 6:32 am is a civilized hour in December, so open at Grayton Beach State Park while the sand is cold and the tracks are yours. From 10 am, take 30A east as the air climbs toward 65.6°F, stopping in Seaside and Alys Beach. Eat outdoors between noon and 3 pm, when the warm block is real. Be back on the beach by 4:15 pm for the 4:47 pm sunset, with the jacket in the car, because the slide toward 47.5°F starts immediately after.
Day two belongs to Topsail Hill Preserve and the dune lakes on foot, again inside the 11 am to 4 pm window. If yours is one of the 6.5 wet days, move the driving to the middle of the day and use the corridor from Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach as the plan, stopping wherever the sky allows. Only 1.7 days a month bring an inch or more, so a wet December day usually means showers with long dry gaps between them.
South Walton in December vs November and January
| Measure | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 72.1°F | 65.6°F | 63.1°F |
| Average low | 53.0°F | 47.5°F | 45.3°F |
| Precipitation | 4.13 in | 4.72 in | 4.52 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.3 | 6.5 | 5.6 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 72.4°F | 65.9°F | 60.4°F |
| Hurricane season | Runs to Nov 30 | Outside | Outside |
Air temperature falls 6.5°F by day and 5.5°F by night between November and December, then only 2.5°F more between December and January. The water refuses to plateau: 72.4°F, then 65.9°F, then 60.4°F, all three from the same 2015-2024 marine average of daily maxima. Wet days peak in the middle of that run, at 4.3 in November, 6.5 in December and 5.6 in January, while December also takes the biggest rainfall total of the three at 4.72 inches.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy the swimming: 72.4°F water, 72.1°F afternoons, two fewer wet days. In exchange, the Atlantic season stays open through November 30, so you trade a storm-free calendar for six and a half degrees of sea. Move four weeks later and you give up only 2.5°F of daytime warmth, but the Gulf drops to 60.4°F and casual swimming ends. Our November and January pages carry each month in full.
Is December a good time to visit South Walton?
Yes for walkers, cyclists, birders and anyone whose beach day involves shoes: 65.6°F afternoons, five state parks, 26 miles of sand and no tropical-storm watch to refresh. No for a family whose idea of a beach vacation includes swimming every afternoon, because 65.9°F water measured at its daily warmest will not carry that trip through a week.
If the swimming decides it, take late November: 72.4°F water, 72.1°F afternoons, and 4.3 wet days instead of 6.5. The cost is on the calendar, since the Atlantic season stays open until November 30 and the odds you accept are the ones NOAA publishes. Our Florida month-by-month verdict sets that trade against the rest of the state.
No other month on this coast puts a 65.9°F Gulf next to a closed hurricane season. November has the warmer water and an open season, January has the closed season and water five and a half degrees colder.
The last word
Decide on the water first, because everything else about December here holds up: the corridor, the parks, the dune lakes, the 11% you will pay on the rate either way. Book the dates, pack a jacket for the 47.5°F nights and a swimsuit you may never open, and be standing on the sand at Grayton Beach by 4:15 pm on your first day. One more thing the calendar hands you: NOAA puts most Atlantic activity between mid-August and mid-October, which leaves December a full two months clear of the busiest stretch.
