South Walton in November: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares to October and December

Arrive on the Panhandle in November and the first surprise is the water. The Gulf off South Walton still averages 72.4°F, while the air only climbs to an average high of 72.1°F. The sand is the same sugar white it was in July, the midday heat has gone, and the sixteen beach neighborhoods strung along Scenic Highway 30A are back to a pace where you can park, ride a bike and eat outside without planning around the sun.

What you hand back is evening. On November 15 the sun sets at 4:49 pm central time and the average low is 53.0°F, so dinner happens in the dark and a jacket stops being optional. Rain totals 4.13 inches for the month, but it lands in a handful of frontal days rather than the daily summer downpour.

November trades October’s 78.9°F water and heat for 72.1°F middays, rain packed into 4.3 days and a 4:49 pm sunset: a walking, biking and quick-swim month rather than a beach-all-day one.

Go for: 26 miles of sand without summer heat, Florida’s 15 coastal dune lakes, riding 30A at midday, and a Gulf still averaging 72.4°F.

Think twice before: booking November for long swims or for small children in the water, and before taking a rental whose pool has no heat when nights average 53.0°F.

Every figure here comes from two named sources and nowhere else. The air normals are NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 series for station USW00053853 at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, a working thermometer on the coast just west of the county, not a grid-cell reanalysis. The water number is a marine model average. Where a source is silent, we say so instead of filling the gap. For the statewide twelve-month view, our Florida calendar does that job.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information puts the 1991-2020 November average high at 72.1°F and the average low at 53.0°F, with 4.13 inches of precipitation for the month. Those come from station USW00053853 at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, along the same stretch of coast as the 30A beaches. A real gauge, a thirty-year record, and the same period used for the neighboring months below.

Four inches of rain reads wet until you split it by day. Only 4.3 days in an average November record 0.10 inch or more, and 1.5 of them deliver an inch or more. That is frontal rain, arriving over a few hours and moving on, not the near-daily afternoon thunderstorm of a Gulf Coast summer. Book outdoor mornings freely and leave one afternoon unplanned.

The 19.1-degree gap between that high and that low is what catches people packing. Middays run shirtsleeves, and by the walk to dinner the thermometer is heading toward the low 50s. Two layers cover the whole month: sleeves for the dawn beach walk, a proper jacket for after dark.

On November 15 the sun rises at 6:09 am and sets at 4:49 pm central time, giving 10 hours 39 minutes of daylight. Clocks have already gone back by then, so the gold light on the dunes happens around four and the day is finished well before a normal dinner hour. Anyone who came for the Gulf horizon should be walking out at 4:15, not 7:30.

Can you swim in South Walton in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The surface off South Walton averages 72.4°F in November in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. One caveat comes with it: that average is built from daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. A swim at seven in the morning will be cooler than the number promises.

In practice, 72°F is swimmable rather than warm. Adults get in, gasp once and are fine for twenty minutes. Children who want an hour in the water come out shivering, and a rash guard or shorty wetsuit changes the whole afternoon for them. Against October’s 78.9°F you are giving up 6.5 degrees, and that is the difference between water you forget about and water you notice on every entry.

We could not verify monthly wind speeds or wave heights for this stretch of the Panhandle, so we give no numbers for either. What is on the record: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center dates the Atlantic season June 1 to November 30, with the peak on September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. November sits inside the window, at its quiet end. Keep an early-month booking refundable if the option exists.

How busy is South Walton in November? Crowds, prices and the lodging tax

We found no occupancy series and no nightly-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. The calendar still says something useful: summer school vacations are over, the water has dropped 6.5 degrees from October, and the county’s 26 miles of sand and 63 public access points are past their busiest stretch of the year.

We also could not verify booking-window data, so no lead time in weeks appears from us. Choose the neighborhood before the dates. Miramar Beach, Seascape and Sandestin anchor the western end, Dune Allen through Seagrove hold the middle of 30A, and Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach close it out east. That choice decides whether your November runs on a bike, a car or a short walk. Our Florida lodging guide handles the wider state.

Two lines land on top of whatever nightly rate you agree to. Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short-term stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per the Department of Revenue’s form DR-15TDT. That is 11% added to a week’s rental before any cleaning or resort charge a host applies, and those charges we could not verify.

One upgrade genuinely changes this month, and it is pool heat. With days averaging 72.1°F and nights at 53.0°F, an unheated pool will read colder than the Gulf by breakfast. Ask the owner whether heating is included, billed per night or unavailable, and get that answer before you pay the deposit. Everything else, the view, the walk to the sand, matters less in November than it does in June.

Things to do in South Walton in November: the dune lakes, 30A and five state parks

November gives back the middle of the day. In July the hours from eleven to three are a heat-management exercise on this coast; at 72.1°F they become the best part of it. Ride 30A at noon, walk a dune lake outflow, and eat lunch outdoors on the same afternoon, all of which July makes you ration.

Walton County holds Florida’s 15 coastal dune lakes, a landform found in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Five state parks sit inside the county, at Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. The shoreline runs 26 miles with 63 public access points. Scenic Highway 30A has carried Florida Scenic Highway status since April 9, 2008, and official state documents give the corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so we state no single length.

The lakes and the parks are there in every month. The air is what moves. October pairs an 80.9°F high with 78.9°F water, so the Gulf reads cool against the day. November brings the two within half a degree of each other, 72.1°F air against 72.4°F water. At eight in the morning, with the overnight low at 53.0°F, the sea is the warmer of the two.

Free in November as in any month: all 63 public beach access points, the shoreline itself, and the 4:49 pm sunset from any of them. We could not verify current entry fees for the five state parks, so we quote none. Florida’s state parks do charge at the gate, so put a line in the budget before you drive to one.

South Walton in November: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts at 6:09 am with sunrise and a beach walk while the thermometer is still near 53.0°F, followed by breakfast indoors. Give the warm block, roughly eleven to three, to the water or to a ride along 30A. Grayton Beach State Park puts a dune lake and the Gulf in one stop. Sunset is at 4:49 pm, so be back on the sand by 4:15 and book dinner for six.

Day two flips the order: Eden Gardens or Topsail Hill Preserve in the morning while the air climbs toward its 72.1°F high, swimming or paddling in the early afternoon when the surface is closest to its 72.4°F average, then the eastern end of 30A through Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach for the last hour of light. If a front comes in, and 4.3 days an average November do bring 0.10 inch or more, move the park to the dry morning gap and spend the wet afternoon driving west toward Miramar Beach. The rain here comes in blocks, not all day.

South Walton in November vs October and December

Measure October November December
Average high 80.9°F 72.1°F 65.6°F
Average low 63.2°F 53.0°F 47.5°F
Precipitation 2.82 in 4.13 in 4.72 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.5 4.3 6.5
Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) 78.9°F 72.4°F 65.9°F

Across the three months the trend runs one way. Average highs fall from 80.9°F in October to 72.1°F in November and 65.6°F in December, 15.3 degrees in total. Rain moves the other way: 2.82 inches, then 4.13, then 4.72, with wet days climbing from 3.5 to 4.3 to 6.5. The Gulf cools fastest of all in the marine record, 78.9°F to 72.4°F to 65.9°F, 13 degrees gone between October and December.

Shift four weeks earlier and you buy warm water at 78.9°F and the driest of the three months at 2.82 inches, paying for it with 80.9°F afternoons and the tail of the busy season. Our October guide carries those numbers in full. Shift four weeks later and December hands over 65.6°F days, 6.5 wet days and a Gulf at 65.9°F, wetsuit water for most people, in exchange for the quietest sand of the three.

Is November a good time to visit South Walton?

Yes, if the beach is somewhere you walk, ride and sit rather than somewhere you spend six hours submerged. Days at 72.1°F with 4.3 wet days is comfortable outdoor weather by any American standard, and the sand is emptier than it has been since spring. No, if you are traveling with small children who want bath-warm water, or if the plan involves a swimsuit at ten in the morning while the air is still leaving the 50s.

If the answer is no, correct backward rather than forward. October delivers 80.9°F days, water at 78.9°F and the lowest rainfall of the three months at 2.82 inches, and the price is heat and more company. December goes the wrong direction on all three counts: colder air, 6.5 wet days, and a Gulf down to 65.9°F.

The one thing November alone does: it puts air and sea within half a degree of each other, 72.1°F against 72.4°F, so getting in stops being the cold part of the day.

The last word

Decide on the water first, then on the pool. Swimmers should be reading the October numbers instead. Anyone who came for 26 miles of near-empty sand, mild middays and a jacket at night will find November the better buy, and the upgrade worth paying for is pool heat, because an unheated rectangle in a county where nights average 53.0°F is landscaping. One date to keep in mind while you book: the Atlantic hurricane season does not close until November 30, so the first week deserves a refundable rate.
