SOUTH WALTON · FLORIDA · OCTOBER
Average highs along the Walton County coast run 80.9°F in October, lows sit at 63.2°F, and the Gulf still averages 78.9°F. That pairing is why the month sells: beach weather without the August heat index, and water nobody has to talk themselves into. Rain eases too, to 2.82 inches for the month against September’s 5.18.
The trade is on the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and NOAA’s National Hurricane Center puts most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so the first two weeks fall inside the active stretch. Daylight is shorter as well: 11 hours 28 minutes on October 15, with the sun down by 6:14 p.m. Central. Beach in the early afternoon, dinner after dark.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH WALTON · OCTOBER
October hands you a swimmable Gulf at 78.9°F with air down to 80.9°F, half of September’s rain, and a storm window that thins after mid-month.
AVG HIGH 80.9°F · SEA 78.9°F · 3.5 WET DAYS · 11H 28M OF DAYLIGHT ON OCT 15
Go for: swimming without September’s 88.5°F afternoons, driving and cycling the Scenic Highway 30A corridor at midday, and the 15 coastal dune lakes the county is known for.
Think twice before: paying a non-refundable deposit for the first half of the month, since NOAA places most Atlantic activity between mid-August and mid-October.

Every air figure here comes from a real instrument rather than a model grid cell: NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00053853, the airport at Destin-Fort Walton Beach, the closest official station to the 30A beaches. The water number is the exception, an API average, and we say so each time we use it.

NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 normals for the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport station give October an average high of 80.9°F, an average low of 63.2°F and 2.82 inches of rain. Those are station normals, read off one coastal thermometer over thirty years, not a reanalysis average for a grid cell, and the two methods do not always agree on overnight lows. When another site quotes you a cooler South Walton night, that is usually the reason.
Measurable rain shows up on 3.5 days in an average October, roughly one day in nine, and 1.1 of them deliver an inch or more. For a week on the coast that means expecting one genuinely wet day and one damp hour somewhere else. September runs 5.3 wet days on 5.18 inches, so the same vacation in the same houses loses close to two soaked afternoons by waiting four weeks.
The gap between day and night is the packing decision: 17.7 degrees between that 80.9°F high and the 63.2°F low. A 6:30 a.m. walk on the sand wants a sweatshirt, the 1 p.m. swim wants nothing, and the same sweatshirt comes back out on a screened porch at nine. One layer per person covers it, which is not true of a November trip.
Light is the other thing October takes. On the 15th the sun rises at 6:46 a.m. and sets at 6:14 p.m. Central Daylight Time (11:46 and 23:14 UTC, per sunrise-sunset.org), for 11 hours 28 minutes. Golden hour on the dunes lands before six, and any drive along the coast road after dinner happens in the dark.
Can you swim in South Walton in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off South Walton averages 78.9°F in October, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024. Read that number for what it is: a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a full 24-hour average would. An early-morning swim sits below it, a 3 p.m. swim sits right at it.
In practice this is the last effortless swimming month of the year on this coast. Nobody needs a wetsuit, nobody stands at the edge negotiating, and the water is only two degrees off the air. By November the same series reads 72.4°F, a 6.5-degree drop that turns long swims into short ones for most adults and most children.
We could not verify a wave-height or wind series for these beaches, so we give no surf numbers and you should read the posted beach warnings on the day. What is dated is the storm calendar: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs the Atlantic season June 1 to November 30, with a September 10 peak and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Swell from a distant system is the likelier October disruption, not the rain.
How busy is South Walton in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
October follows the summer school peak and Labor Day, which is a calendar fact rather than a price one. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Walton County, so we crown no month cheapest and no month expensive. What we can say is that the Southeastern school year is in session, and the beach-house market here is built for families, so the demand that fills these 16 neighborhoods in July is at school in October.
On booking, we could not verify any lead-time data, so no number of weeks here is ours to promise. The supply side is countable: 16 marketed beach neighborhoods from Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach, 26 miles of sand, 63 public access points. Gulf-front inventory in the small neighborhoods is thin at any date, so if one specific house or one specific street matters, treat it like a summer reservation rather than a shoulder-season one. Our Florida lodging guide covers the regional trade-offs.
The tax line is verified and it is two taxes, not one. Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid alongside the 6% state sales tax, per Florida Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT. That is 11% on the nightly rate before any cleaning or booking charge: on a $2,000 week, $220. Cross-check it against the quote, since some platforms show it only at the final screen. More cost context sits in our Florida trip-cost guide.
One upgrade genuinely changes an October trip: walking distance to the water. With 11 hours 28 minutes of daylight and the swim window concentrated between noon and four, a ten-minute drive and a parking hunt eat the warmest part of the day. Paying for the shorter walk buys back beach hours in October in a way it does not in June, when the light lasts until dinner.
Things to do in South Walton in October

October opens the middle of the day back up. September averages 88.5°F highs here, which pushes hiking and cycling to dawn and dusk. At 80.9°F you can walk a trail at noon, ride the 30A corridor after lunch, and still swim at four, all in one day. That combination of usable air and warm water does not exist in July, and it is gone by Thanksgiving.
Walton County holds five state parks, four of them coastal: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake and Eden Gardens. It also holds all 15 of Florida’s coastal dune lakes, a landform documented in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Scenic Highway 30A became a Florida Scenic Highway on April 9, 2008; state corridor documents give its length as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so we quote neither as the figure.
What the month changes at these places is the air, not the water. The Gulf loses 7.0 degrees between September and October (85.9°F to 78.9°F in the marine series), while the air loses 7.6 (88.5°F to 80.9°F), so the swim stays and the misery goes. A dune-lake boardwalk at Deer Lake or the long dune walk at Topsail is a different errand at 81 degrees than at 89.
We could not verify October entry fees for the state parks or parking charges at the 63 public access points, so we quote no dollar amounts for either. Check the park and the county before you drive out, and see our statewide things-to-do guide for what else the Panhandle holds in the same week.
South Walton in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one belongs to the water. Sunrise is 6:46 a.m., so a first walk on the sand costs only an alarm and the sweatshirt that 63.2°F morning demands. Breakfast at nine, then drive east along 30A and stop where an access point has room. Swim from noon to three, when the air holds its 80.9°F normal and the Gulf reads near 79. Be showered by five, because the light is gone at 6:14 p.m.
Day two goes slower and partly inland: Topsail Hill Preserve in the cool of the morning, a dune-lake stop at Deer Lake, then Grayton Beach for the afternoon swim and an early dinner in one of the 16 neighborhoods. If the forecast shows one of October’s 1.1 inch-plus days, spend it driving the corridor from Dune Allen through Rosemary Beach and hold the swim for the next afternoon, since the Gulf keeps 78.9°F all month.
South Walton in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.5°F | 80.9°F | 72.1°F |
| Average low | 72.4°F | 63.2°F | 53.0°F |
| Rainfall | 5.18 in | 2.82 in | 4.13 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.3 | 3.5 | 4.3 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 85.9°F | 78.9°F | 72.4°F |
Read the three columns as one slide. Air falls 7.6 degrees from September to October and another 8.8 into November. Rain is lowest in the middle month by a wide margin, 2.82 inches against 5.18 and 4.13, with 3.5 wet days rather than 5.3 or 4.3. The marine series drops 85.9°F to 78.9°F to 72.4°F, so the swimming holds in October and leaves in November.
Shifting four weeks later trades away the water and buys the calendar: November brings 53.0°F nights, a real jacket, and a hurricane season that closes on the 30th. Shifting four weeks earlier buys bathwater at 85.9°F and pays in humidity, two extra wet days and the September 10 storm peak. Our South Walton in September page runs those numbers from the other side, and the statewide calendar puts the whole year in order.
Is October a good time to visit South Walton?
Yes for swimmers, cyclists and anyone traveling without a school calendar: 78.9°F water, 80.9°F air, 2.82 inches of rain and one wet day in a typical week is close to the best arrangement this coast offers. No for travelers who need certainty from a non-refundable deposit, because the first half of the month still sits inside NOAA’s mid-August to mid-October activity window.
If that risk rules October out, November is the substitute rather than September: 72.1°F days, 4.13 inches of rain and a season that ends on the 30th. The cost is the Gulf at 72.4°F in the marine series, which means beach walks and a fast dip instead of an hour in the water. Families with young swimmers should stay in October and book flexible.
No other month puts the Gulf within two degrees of the air temperature here, and that single overlap is what makes October the month you can swim at four and eat outside at seven.
The last word
Book the second half of the month if the money has to be non-refundable, pay the extra for the short walk to the sand, and let the 11-hour day set the order of things. Then keep one wet-day card in your pocket: the county’s fifth state park, Ponce de Leon Springs, sits inland and off the beach entirely, which is exactly where you want to be on the one October day the sky opens. Getting there means a car, as our getting-around guide explains.
