South Walton in September: Weather, Gulf Temperature, Crowds and Storm Season

In September the Gulf off South Walton still averages 85.9°F, and the average high on the beach road comes in at 88.5°F. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center also puts the Atlantic season’s statistical peak on September 10, squarely inside the month you are booking. A week here is built on that pair: water warm enough to stay in for an hour, and a cancellation policy worth reading before you pay.

Walton County sells itself as sixteen beach neighborhoods, from Miramar Beach at the west end to Inlet Beach at the east, strung along 26 miles of sand with 63 public beach access points. Which of the sixteen suits your trip belongs to our South Walton guide. Everything below is dated to the month: what September gives, what it charges for, and whether August or October would serve you better.

Every air figure here comes from one thermometer: the NOAA station at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (USW00053853), on the 1991 to 2020 normals. The water figure comes from a marine model rather than a buoy at your walkover, and that difference is worth knowing when two tables disagree. Each number below carries its source.

The NOAA NCEI normals for 1991 to 2020 give South Walton an average September high of 88.5°F, an average low of 72.4°F and 5.18 inches of rain. Those readings come off the station at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, an instrument on the ground rather than a modeled grid cell, and the two methods do not always agree on overnight lows. When another table shows you a cooler September night, that is usually why.

Five inches of rain sounds like a washout until you divide it. Only 5.3 days in an average September record at least 0.10 inch, and 1.5 of those bring an inch or more, which works out to close to a full inch on every wet day. Rain here arrives in heavy loads on a handful of dates and leaves the other twenty-five alone.

Between 88.5°F at the top of the day and 72.4°F before dawn there are 16.1 degrees, enough to make a 7 a.m. beach walk pleasant and a 2 p.m. one an endurance event. Pack for the hot half: hat, rash guard for the kids, more water than you think you need, and one light layer for restaurants that run the air conditioning hard. Nothing warmer goes in the bag.

On September 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:28 a.m. and drops at 6:50 p.m. Central time, about 12 hours 23 minutes of daylight once the seconds are counted. The beach turns golden and bearable around five and goes dark before eight, so dinner starts after the light has gone. Mornings are the long, cool end of a September day.

Can you swim in South Walton in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The Gulf off South Walton averages 85.9°F in September, from the Open-Meteo marine model averaged over 2015 to 2024. Read it as an afternoon number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water. An early swim before breakfast comes in under that figure.

At 85.9°F there is no gasp at the waterline and no timer on the children. Water that warm gives back very little cooling when the air is sitting at 88.5°F, so a long float reads as pleasant rather than refreshing. Snorkeling and paddleboarding need no wetsuit and no patience. Sunscreen reapplication and a shade tent are the two things to plan for.

We found no wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we quote no swell heights. The calendar is documented: NOAA runs the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, peaking on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A distant system can raise the surf here days before any local rain appears, so read the day’s beach conditions before anyone goes in.

How busy is South Walton in September? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no occupancy series and no nightly-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month expensive and none cheapest. The calendar does say two things at once: September falls after the summer school break and inside the hurricane season, and both pull demand in the same direction. It also holds September 10, which makes cancellation terms the first line to read on any booking.

Book a rate you can cancel, and check when the money becomes non-refundable, since many Gulf-front rentals take full payment weeks before arrival. Four to six weeks of lead time (est.) is usually enough for a September week, and it keeps you close enough to the forecast to make a real decision about the dates. Weather coverage on a travel policy is the other half of that call, priced against the nights you stand to lose.

Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per the Department of Revenue’s form DR-15TDT. That is 11% on the accommodation line before any cleaning fee or resort charge the property adds. Those extras are set property by property, so ask for the all-in nightly total in writing before you book.

One upgrade changes September more than any other: a bed on the beach side of 30A. With 63 public access points spread over 26 miles, the length of the walk to the water decides whether you go back in at five, when the air has come off 88.5°F and the Gulf is still 85.9. Parking charges at individual accesses vary and we could not verify a county-wide figure, so budget for them in the busier neighborhoods.

Things to do in South Walton in September

September is the month the water stays summer while the air starts to let go. The average high has fallen 2.1 degrees from August and wet days have dropped from 8.1 to 5.3, so a morning kayak or a bike ride along 30A has better odds than it did four weeks earlier. With 12 hours 23 minutes of daylight in mid-month, you still get a usable outdoor hour at both ends of the day.

The named list is short and specific. Walton County holds all 15 of Florida’s coastal dune lakes, a landform found in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Five state parks sit inside the county, at Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. Scenic Highway 30A became a Florida Scenic Highway on April 9, 2008, and state documents give the corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so we quote no single length. Current park entry fees could not be verified, so we quote none.

Air and water move at different speeds on this coast. Between September and October the average high drops 7.6 degrees, from 88.5°F to 80.9, while the Gulf gives up 7.0, from 85.9°F to 78.9. The gap between them barely moves, 2.6 degrees in September and 2.0 in October, so what October changes is the whole scale. In September the shade under the pines at Topsail Hill earns the walk at noon.

Nothing on the shoreline charges admission: 63 public access points along 26 miles of county beach, and a 6:50 p.m. sunset you can watch from any of them. The dune-lake outflows, which open and close with rainfall, cost nothing to stand beside. Seaside and Rosemary Beach are where the paid parking layer bites hardest, so arrive early or walk in from the rental.

South Walton in September: a two-day itinerary

Sunrise at 6:28 a.m. hands you an empty beach and air in the low 70s, so walk or swim before eight. Take the middle of the day indoors, roughly 11 to 4, while the thermometer works toward 88.5°F: lunch, a slow drive along 30A, a nap paid for by the early start. Back in the water at 4:30, when the Gulf is still 85.9°F and the sand has stopped burning. Sunset at 6:50 p.m. beside a dune lake, dinner after dark.

Day two, start at Topsail Hill Preserve or Grayton Beach before the heat, then give the middle of the day to your own access point. If the sky turns, the odds are known: 5.3 days a month bring at least 0.10 inch and 1.5 bring an inch or more, so most wet days still hold a usable morning. When one does not, drive inland to Ponce de Leon Springs. Our getting-around guide has the rental and toll detail.

South Walton in September vs August and October

August September October
Average high 90.6°F 88.5°F 80.9°F
Average low 75.8°F 72.4°F 63.2°F
Precipitation 6.08 in 5.18 in 2.82 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 8.1 5.3 3.5
Gulf surface, daily maxima 87.8°F 85.9°F 78.9°F

August runs hotter and wetter on every line: 90.6°F days, 6.08 inches, 8.1 wet days. October is the dry one, 80.9°F and 2.82 inches over 3.5 wet days, with the Gulf down to 78.9°F. September keeps 98 percent of August’s water temperature while shedding a third of its wet days. The air normals come from the same NOAA station and period. The three sea figures all come from the Open-Meteo marine model over 2015 to 2024.

Shift four weeks later and you trade water for certainty. October’s 78.9°F Gulf is still swimmable for most people, its nights fall to 63.2°F, and 3.5 wet days is the lightest rain load of the three. You also step past the season’s peak date, though the hurricane season itself runs to November 30. Shift four weeks earlier and you gain 87.8°F water and 2.1 hotter degrees by day, with nearly three more wet days to route around.

Is September a good time to visit South Walton?

Yes for anyone whose main object is the water. September delivers 85.9°F swimming, 5.3 wet days instead of August’s 8.1, and light on the sand until 6:50 p.m. No for anyone who needs fixed dates with the money already spent: the month contains September 10, and a non-refundable booking removes your only real option, which is moving the week.

If that describes your trip, take October. The average high drops to 80.9°F, rain falls to 2.82 inches across 3.5 days, and the Gulf still reads 78.9°F, warm enough for most swimmers on this sand. You give up bath-warm water and gain a month you can pay for in advance. Our Florida timing guide sets the same trade against the rest of the state.

No other month pairs an 85.9°F Gulf with only 5.3 wet days: August has the water and three more rain days, October has the calm and a sea seven degrees cooler.

The last word

Settle the cancellation terms before you settle the neighborhood, then take the beach side of 30A and swim twice a day. Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach sit in the western half of the sixteen and put you on the same 26 miles of sand as the famous addresses. Pack for 88.5°F at noon and 72.4°F at dawn, and keep the second swim for 5 p.m.
