SOUTH WALTON · AUGUST · FLORIDA PANHANDLE
August is the month the Gulf off South Walton stops being refreshing and starts being comfortable the way a bath is: 87.8°F in the water, against afternoons that average 90.6°F on land. Sixteen beach neighborhoods run along this stretch of the Panhandle, from Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach, and August hands all of them the same schedule: an early morning, an indoor middle, and light that holds until 7:27 p.m.
The trade sits in the same set of normals. Rain totals 6.08 inches across 8.1 days with measurable rain, and NOAA dates the Atlantic hurricane season June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. None of that ruins a beach week. It changes how you book one, and whether you pay for a rate you can cancel.

Every figure here comes from a thermometer rather than a model grid cell: NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00053853 at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, the official long-record station for this coast, a short drive west of the 30A beaches. August averages a high of 90.6°F and a low of 75.8°F, with 6.08 inches of rain. A reanalysis product would give you a different pair of numbers for the same month, and you would have no idea where it was measured.
An average August records 8.1 days with at least 0.10 inch of rain, and 1.8 of those drop an inch or more. Divide the 6.08 inches across those wet days and the typical one carries about three quarters of an inch. Gulf Coast summers run on convection rather than passing fronts, so the useful planning unit is the hour: a sky that builds at two and a beach that is usable again by five.
The gap between day and night is 14.8°F, and all of it sits above 75°F. Nothing in the suitcase is for warmth. Pack for water instead: a second shirt for the afternoon, a rain shell that folds into a pocket, sandals that dry, and one dry set of clothes left in the car for the drive to dinner.
On August 15 the sun rises at 6:10 a.m. Central and sets at 7:27 p.m., 13 hours 16 minutes apart, per sunrise-sunset.org. That gives two usable ends to the day, roughly 6:30 to nine in the morning and five until dark, with the middle better spent inland, indoors, or under a roof with a fan.
Can you swim in South Walton in August? Gulf sea temperature
The Gulf off South Walton averages 87.8°F in August in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. Read the fine print on that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, not a 24-hour mean, so it runs a shade warm. The water at seven in the morning is cooler than 87.8°F, and the water at four in the afternoon is the number you are reading.
At that temperature there is no entry ritual, no gasp, no ten minutes of standing knee-deep. It also means the sea does almost nothing to cool you, so what ends a swim in August is sun exposure rather than chill. Children will stay in until someone calls them out. Sunscreen, a rash guard and the 6:10 sunrise do more for a beach day here than any shade rental.
We could not verify a monthly wave-height or wind series for the Walton County shore, so we give no surf figures. What we can date is the calendar: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs the Atlantic season from June 1 to November 30, with the statistical peak on September 10 and most activity falling between mid-August and mid-October. The back half of this month sits inside that window. Treat it as a booking question and check the tropics before you drive.
How busy is South Walton in August? Crowds, taxes and booking
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month the year’s most expensive and we quote no nightly figure. August belongs to the summer season regardless, and the demand it carries is family demand, running on school calendars we did not verify state by state for the drive markets that feed this coast.
That pushes the useful advice away from lead time and toward terms. With no booking-window data for the area, take any number of weeks as editorial: we would hold a refundable rate booked six to eight weeks out (est.) rather than a cheaper locked one, precisely because NOAA’s busy window opens in the middle of the month. Read the cancellation clause before the photos of the pool.
One charge does come with a number. Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per the Florida Department of Revenue’s form DR-15TDT. Add 11% to the advertised nightly rate before you compare two listings, and see what a Florida trip costs for the rest of the budget lines.
If one line of the budget deserves the upgrade in August, it is walking distance to sand. Walton County counts 63 public beach access points along 26 miles of shore, per the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. In a 90.6°F afternoon, a rental three minutes from one of them buys two swims a day; a rental that needs the car and a parking hunt buys one.
Things to do in South Walton in August: dune lakes, 30A and five state parks

August is the one of these three months with the Gulf at 87.8°F: July and September both average 85.9°F in the same marine record. Add 13 hours 16 minutes of daylight on the 15th and the swimming hours run from the 6:10 sunrise to the 7:27 sunset, with the water warm at both ends. Nobody needs a wetsuit, a heated pool or a plan B for the temperature.
The geography here is genuinely unusual, and it is documented. Walton County holds Florida’s 15 coastal dune lakes, a landform the state’s environmental department says occurs in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Five state parks sit in the county: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs. Scenic Highway 30A has been a designated Florida Scenic Highway since April 9, 2008, and its own official documents give the corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, so we quote no single length.
Those lakes and parks are there in February too. What August moves is the air above them: 90.6°F afternoons against September’s 88.5°F, over nights that hold at 75.8°F. Every park visit therefore shifts into the first three hours of light, and the two inland stops, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs, become the midday option rather than the rainy-day one.
The access itself is public: 63 mapped points along the 26 miles, listed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, plus the walk along 30A between them. We could not verify which of those points charge for parking, nor what the five state parks ask at the gate, so we quote no price for either. Call the park you plan to enter the morning you go.
South Walton in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 6:10 puts you on the sand before seven, while the air is still near its 75.8°F low, and that first swim costs nothing in sun exposure. Breakfast at nine. The middle of the day goes inland or indoors, Eden Gardens or a long lunch, while the afternoon climbs toward 90.6°F. Back out at five, when the Gulf is doing exactly what it did at dawn, and dinner after the 7:27 sunset.
Day two heads along 30A by bike before the heat, stops where one of the 15 dune lakes meets the Gulf, then gives the afternoon to Grayton Beach or Topsail Hill Preserve. If the sky builds, and on 8.1 days in an average August it will, the rain comes in bursts rather than across the day: covered lunch, later swim. A named storm in the forecast is a different call, and the cancellation terms you booked answer it.
South Walton in August vs July and September
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rain | Days 0.10 in+ | Gulf (daily-max avg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| July | 90.9°F | 76.2°F | 5.77 in | 7.2 | 85.9°F |
| August | 90.6°F | 75.8°F | 6.08 in | 8.1 | 87.8°F |
| September | 88.5°F | 72.4°F | 5.18 in | 5.3 | 85.9°F |
On air temperature, July and August are twins: 0.3°F apart by day, 0.4°F at night. The separation is in the rain, where August adds 0.31 inch and nearly a full extra wet day, and in the water, where August runs 1.9°F warmer than either neighbor. September is the month that actually cools, taking 2.1°F off the afternoon and 3.4°F off the night while rain days drop from 8.1 to 5.3.
Shift four weeks later and you gain 2.8 fewer days of measurable rain, 0.9 inch less water from the sky, and nights that finally fall into the low 70s. You give up the warmest Gulf of the summer, back to 85.9°F, and you move your trip toward September 10, the statistical peak of the hurricane season. Four weeks earlier, into July, buys drier normals and the same heat with cooler water.
Is August a good time to visit South Walton?
Yes, if the water is the reason you are coming. An 87.8°F Gulf needs no courage from anyone, nights at 75.8°F mean no jacket for the whole party, and 26 miles of beach with 63 ways onto it absorb a busy month better than a single resort strip would. No, if humidity flattens you, if your plans are hiking rather than floating, or if your booking has to be locked and non-refundable.
When the answer is no, the move is the second half of September. The same NOAA station records 88.5°F afternoons and 72.4°F nights, rain days fall to 5.3 and the total to 5.18 inches. Two costs come with it: the sea slides back to 85.9°F, and September 10 is the season’s statistical peak, so the discipline about refundable rates gets stricter rather than looser.
What August alone gives is that 87.8°F Gulf, 1.9°F above what July and September hold in the same marine record, with more than thirteen hours of daylight wrapped around it.
The last word
Book the bed you can cancel, then build the day around the two usable ends of it, 6:10 to nine in the morning and five until the 7:27 sunset. One quirk worth knowing before you map anything: Grayton Beach is both one of the sixteen beach neighborhoods on this coast and one of the county’s five state parks, so the address you rent and the gate you drive to are not automatically the same place. Check which one your afternoon means.
