Ponta da Piedade in December: Weather, Sea Temperature, Daylight and Crowds

The stacks and arches are still there in December. There is simply less light on them: 9 hours and 41 minutes on the 15th, with the sun up at 7:40 am and gone by 5:21 pm. Air tops out at an average 62.6°F, the water off the headland runs 63.2°F, and the clifftop path that broils in high summer walks easily at noon in a fleece.

What changes the trip is rain and sea state. Eight December days in an average year record at least 0.04 inch, and 2.6 of them bring 0.39 inch or more. Those numbers come from a thermometer at Sagres, the windiest point of this coast, and that address matters as much as the values.

December gives you an empty cliff path, 62.6°F afternoons and water at 63.2°F, and takes away three hours of daylight plus roughly one wet day in four.

Go for: clifftop walking at 62.6°F, coves you can photograph without a crowd in the frame, and a sunset over the Atlantic that lands before dinner.

Think twice before: planning a swimming trip around 63.2°F water, or paying in advance for a grotto boat on the coast IPMA calls its windiest point.

Portugal’s national weather service, the IPMA, puts December at an average high of 62.6°F and an average low of 49.8°F, with 2.96 inches of rain, over the 1991-2020 normals period. The reading comes from station 533 at Sagres, a real thermometer 22.9 meters above the sea, not a model grid cell. Every figure here carries that address, and it is the windiest point of this coast. Inland high ground is colder and far wetter, and the far end of the Algarve keeps weather of its own, so do not pack for a mountain trail on a coastal reading.

Eight days in an average December record at least 1 mm, which converts to 0.04 inch, and 2.6 days record 10 mm or more, 0.39 inch. Watch the threshold: IPMA counts a wet day at 0.04 inch, while American tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so the two counts are not interchangeable. Translated into a trip, that is something falling on roughly one December day in four, and two or three days heavy enough to end a cliff walk early and send you to Lagos for lunch.

Between the 49.8°F before dawn and the 62.6°F at midday sits 12.8°F, a gentle spread by continental standards and still enough to change your morning on an exposed headland where wind adds its own bite. The working kit is a wind shell, a fleece, long pants and shoes with grip, because wet limestone on the descent to a cove is the real hazard of the month. Our packing guide covers the rest of the suitcase.

Daylight on December 15 runs 9 hours and 41 minutes, sunrise at 7:40 am and sunset at 5:21 pm, Portugal keeping UTC through the winter. The low sun works in your favor on the stacks: warm side light arrives around mid-afternoon rather than at some unreachable hour, and the best of it is finished before 5:30. Dinner in Lagos happens after dark, every night of the month.

Can you swim in Ponta da Piedade in December? Sea temperature and how cold it feels

The sea surface off the headland averages 63.2°F in December, from the Open-Meteo Marine API across 2015-2024. Read that value for exactly what it is: a mean of daily maxima, so a shade warmer than a full 24-hour average. The water you step into at 8 am sits under the published number, and the figure is a ten-year satellite-era average rather than a forecast for your week.

Yes, you can swim, and you will not stay in long. At 63.2°F the first thirty seconds take your breath, and stepping out brings no relief because the average air high of 62.6°F is actually below the water. Praia do Camilo and Praia de Dona Ana are both perfectly usable for a dip with a towel and a plan to get dressed fast. Anyone in for longer than a plunge, surfers included, wears a wetsuit here in winter.

We found no December wave-height or wind series for the headland, so we quote no figure for either. What IPMA does flag is the setting of its own station: Sagres is the windiest point of this coast, and on a cliff shore it is the sea state, not the air temperature, that decides whether the grotto boats leave the water at all.

How busy is Ponta da Piedade in December? Crowds, prices and booking

December sits outside the Algarve’s summer season, which is a calendar fact rather than a measurement. We found no monthly occupancy or room-rate series for Lagos or the headland, so we crown no month the cheapest and publish no nightly figure. What you can expect from the date alone is a clifftop path shared with a handful of walkers instead of a queue at the viewpoint.

Two date bands behave differently inside the same month. Christmas through New Year is a fixed holiday period along this whole coast, and the first three weeks are ordinary winter. Without a rate series we will not tell you to book a set number of weeks ahead. We would book a refundable room, for a different reason: with 2.6 heavy-rain days in an average December, the flexibility is weather insurance, not price strategy.

We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate applying to overnight stays in Lagos in December, so no per-night amount comes from us. Ask the property to confirm what it adds at checkout, and take the rest of the budget from our Portugal trip-cost guide.

One spend genuinely changes the month, and it is the car. With 9 hours and 41 minutes of light, the difference between reaching the headland at 9 am and waiting for a bus is an hour of usable winter daylight, and the same car turns a washed-out morning into a drive to Carvoeiro or Sagres. Our rental guide handles the paperwork, and getting around Portugal covers the alternatives.

Things to do in Ponta da Piedade in December: the cliff path, Praia do Camilo and Lagos

Midday walking is the thing December hands you. At an average high of 62.6°F you can take the full clifftop stretch at noon, hood down, without arranging the day around shade or a water bottle. The same hour in a summer month is spent looking for either. Low sun also keeps the arches lit from the side for most of the short afternoon rather than flattening them from directly overhead.

The headland itself, with its lighthouse, its stacks and the stairway to the water, is the anchor. Praia do Camilo and Praia de Dona Ana are the two coves within walking reach, both on water averaging 63.2°F this month, and the old town of Lagos is the base with the restaurants. Further along the coast sit Benagil and the cliffs at Sagres. We could not verify December sailing times or fares for the grotto boats, so we list none: confirm at the quay on the day.

What December moves is the air, not the water. The sea reads 64.4°F in November, 63.2°F now and 61.4°F in January, a band of 3.0°F across three months, while the average air high falls from 66.2°F to 62.6°F to 61.0°F, a swing of 5.2°F. The rock pools and coves stay much as they were in autumn. The wind on the clifftop is the part that tells you the season has turned.

The best of the month is free. The viewpoints over the stacks, the clifftop path, the stairway down to the cove and the 5:21 pm sunset cost nothing, and the beaches in December belong to whoever shows up. We could not verify parking charges at the headland in winter, so we quote no amount there either.

Ponta da Piedade in December: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts with coffee in Lagos while it is still dark, because the sun does not clear the horizon until 7:40 am. Be on the headland by 9:00 for flat morning light on the arches, walk the clifftop while the air climbs toward 62.6°F, and take the stairway down to Praia do Camilo around noon for the plunge in 63.2°F water. Keep 3:30 to 5:21 pm for the lighthouse and the sunset, then eat in town after dark.

Day two goes on the water if the sea allows it, boats being the one plan this coast cancels, and otherwise runs west to Sagres, where the IPMA station stands at 22.9 meters. On the one December day in four that brings 0.04 inch or more, invert it: market and old town in the morning, the drive to Carvoeiro or Benagil when the sky lifts, and the headland late, since 2.6 days aside, most December rain is not all-day rain.

Ponta da Piedade in December vs November and January

Measure November December January
Average high 66.2°F 62.6°F 61.0°F
Average low 53.1°F 49.8°F 47.3°F
Precipitation 3.23 in 2.96 in 2.10 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 8.4 8.0 7.4
Sea surface, daily maxima 64.4°F 63.2°F 61.4°F

Across the three months the air does most of the moving: 66.2°F in November, 62.6°F in December, 61.0°F in January, with the overnight low sliding from 53.1°F to 47.3°F. Rain thins out steadily, 3.23 inches then 2.96 then 2.10, and the wet-day count barely budges, 8.4 to 8.0 to 7.4. The sea lags behind the calendar, as it always does on an Atlantic coast, dropping only 3.0°F from November to January.

Shift four weeks earlier and you buy 3.6°F on the daytime high and 1.2°F in the water, and you pay for it with 0.27 inch more rain. Shift four weeks later and January hands back 0.86 inch of rain and half a wet day, at the cost of the coldest nights of the three and a sea at 61.4°F. Both trade-offs are laid out in full on November and January.

Is December a good time to visit Ponta da Piedade?

For walkers, photographers and anyone who wants the arches without a boat queue in the picture, yes, clearly. A 62.6°F afternoon is walking weather, and the coves are empty on a weekday. For a beach holiday it is a no: 9 hours and 41 minutes of light and water at 63.2°F do not make a lounging trip, and families counting on daily boat trips should read the wind note above twice.

If that verdict lands wrong, November is the better shift for warmth, with a 66.2°F high and a 64.4°F sea, provided you accept 3.23 inches of rain and 8.4 wet days. January is the shift for dry weather rather than comfort: 2.10 inches, the least of the three, on the coldest nights at 47.3°F.

Heading into winter, December is the last month with the sea above 63°F, and the only one of the three where the water sits warmer than the average air high.

The last word

Decide the boat separately from the trip. The walking, the coves and the sunset all hold up in a 62.6°F December, and the grotto tour is the one item the wind at Sagres can delete with no notice, so treat it as a bonus you confirm on the day. One figure worth carrying: those 2.96 inches arrive across eight wet days, which averages about 0.37 inch per rainy day. That is an hour indoors with a coffee, not a lost week.
