PONTA DA PIEDADE · OCTOBER · THE ALGARVE
October at Ponta da Piedade runs 72.3°F by day and 59.0°F at night, with the water off the headland averaging 66.3°F. The ochre stacks, the arches and the sea caves are the ones every July visitor photographs, but the clifftop path in mid-October is walkable at noon, and the wooden stairway down to the boat landing is no longer an oven with a handrail. Flights from the US land at Lisbon or Faro, and the last leg west is a drive either way.
Rain is what the month takes back. September logs 0.73 inch at the Sagres station, October 2.42, and the count of wet days climbs from 2.5 to 6.7. Daylight is down to 11 hours 18 minutes on October 15, so the light is gone by seven in the evening. Nothing along this coast shuts for the season, yet a two-night visit built entirely around boats and swimming now needs a spare afternoon in reserve.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · PONTA DA PIEDADE · OCTOBER
October holds the warmest sea of the three fall months and loses the summer heat, at the price of rain on roughly one day in five and a sunset at seven.
AVG HIGH 72.3°F · SEA 66.3°F · 6.7 WET DAYS · 11H18 OF DAYLIGHT ON OCT 15
Go for: cliff walking at midday, the warmest water of September, October and November, and a headland that charges nothing to walk on.
Think twice before: booking two nights and one boat morning, since swell and showers can take that morning away.

Every figure here comes from one of three places: the IPMA normals measured at Sagres, a marine model for the water, and a sunrise table for the light. We found no occupancy or room-rate series for Lagos, and we could not verify boat fares or the municipal lodging tax, so we quote none of them.
Ponta Da Piedade weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | October figure |
|---|---|
| Average high | 72.3°F (22.4°C) |
| Average low | 59.0°F (15.0°C) |
| Rainfall | 2.42 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 6.7 |
| Sea surface, mean of daily maxima | 66.3°F |
| Daylight on October 15 | 11 h 18 min |
| Sunrise / sunset, October 15 | 7:42 a.m. / 7:00 p.m. local |
Those normals are the 1991-2020 set published by IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, read off station 533 at Sagres: a real thermometer 22.9 m (75 feet) above the sea, not a model grid cell. Where it stands matters. Sagres lies west along the same coast and is the windiest point of it, so the numbers describe a low, exposed, ocean-facing spot. Go inland or uphill and the air turns colder and considerably wetter than 72.3°F and 2.42 inches would suggest.
Measurable rain falls on 6.7 days in an average October, roughly one day in five. IPMA counts a day as wet at 1 mm, or 0.04 inch, a lower bar than the 0.10-inch threshold most American tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable. What that looks like on the ground is a gray hour, wet limestone underfoot on the stairway, then an afternoon that clears. All-day rain happens in October, but it is not the shape the month usually takes.
Thirteen degrees separate the 72.3°F high from the 59.0°F low, and most of that drop lands after sunset on a headland where wind is a constant. A T-shirt carries you from late morning until five. For the sunset hour, add a windbreaker and long pants, and for the stairway add grippy soles: those steps are worn limestone and they hold water for hours after a shower. Our packing guide covers the rest of the bag.
October 15 gives 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight. Sunrise is 06:42 UTC and sunset 18:00 UTC, and local clocks run an hour ahead in mid-October, so that is 7:42 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the ground. Golden light hits the west-facing stacks between six and seven. Choose a morning slot for calm water or a late one for the light, and do not plan both in a day that also involves driving the coast.
Can you swim in Ponta Da Piedade in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off the headland averages 66.3°F in October, from the Open-Meteo Marine API across 2015 to 2024. Read the label before you pack: that average is built from daily maximum readings, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Tables that publish a 24-hour figure for the western Algarve will show a slightly cooler number for the same month, and neither version is wrong.
Sixty-six degrees is Atlantic, not Mediterranean. Entry is a shock, then it settles, and most adults swim comfortably for ten or fifteen minutes before the cold starts asking questions. Children last less. Anyone planning an hour of snorkeling around the grottoes wants a shorty wetsuit. Air at 72.3°F does not dry you off quickly either, so bring a second towel and something with sleeves for the walk back up the steps.
We found no wave-height or wind series for October at this headland, so we give no figures for either. The station record does tell you that Sagres, where the thermometer sits, is the windiest point of this coast, and at Ponta da Piedade it is the sea state rather than the air temperature that decides whether the small boats leave. Ask your operator the evening before, and keep a second morning free in case the swell wins.
How busy is Ponta Da Piedade in October? Crowds, booking and the shoulder season
October sits in the Algarve’s shoulder, after the European school-holiday block closes at the end of September and before the winter quiet. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Lagos, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the peak. The calendar says the summer season here is built around July and August. The normals say October still delivers 72.3°F afternoons, which is why the fall keeps its visitors.
On lead times we have nothing to measure, so we name no number of weeks. The weather gives a planning rule anyway. With rain on about one day in five, a two-night trip that must contain a boat morning is a coin toss, and three nights turns the same trip into a comfortable one. Book refundable rooms where the rate allows, hold the boat until you have seen a two-day forecast, and pick your base with our Algarve guide.
Several Algarve municipalities charge a per-night tourist tax on top of the room rate. We could not verify the Lagos rate or which months it applies to, so no percentage and no euro figure appear anywhere above. Ask the property directly when you book, and add whatever they quote to the nightly line in our cost breakdown.
The upgrade that changes this month specifically is the rental car. October showers arrive in bands rather than as a lid over the whole coast, and wheels let you move: Lagos, Carvoeiro and Sagres all sit on the same road. Our car guide handles tolls and the insurance trap. Without a car, a two-day visit is staked on one patch of sky.
Things to do in Ponta Da Piedade in October: the cliff stairway, Praia do Camilo and the grotto boats

October is the month you can walk the clifftop at midday without negotiating with the heat. November drops the high to 66.2°F and spreads rain across 8.4 days, which takes the noon walk and the swim off the table in the same week. At 72.3°F on land with 66.3°F water below, the day has room for both: cliff path in the late morning, water in the afternoon, dry and warm on the rocks by six.
The headland itself is the attraction: stacks, arches and grottoes under a squat lighthouse, with a long wooden stairway dropping to the landing where the small boats wait. Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana sit a short cliff walk back toward town, both reached by steps, both sheltered. Lagos is the base. East along the coast lies Benagil, west the cliffs of Sagres. We carry no fare for the grotto boats, since operators set their own and revise them by season.
Across September, October and November the water barely shifts: 64.2°F, 66.3°F, 64.4°F. The air moves a great deal, from 76.8°F down to 72.3 and then to 66.2. That gap is the season in one line. In October the sea is the warmer of the two, so the swim becomes the point of the afternoon rather than the sunbathing, and the beaches below the steps empty earlier in the evening as the light goes.
The headland carries no gate. The clifftop path, the stairway, the lighthouse viewpoints and the beaches at the bottom are open and free in October as in any month, which makes a gray hour cheap to waste. We could not verify whether the parking area at the top charges in the fall, so allow for it. Sunset at 7:00 p.m. is early enough to watch from the rocks and still reach a Lagos table by eight.
Ponta Da Piedade in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 7:42 a.m. in mid-October, so leave Lagos around eight and take the clifftop path while the low sun comes in from the east. Down the stairway by nine-thirty, boat slot booked for mid-morning if the sea allows. Lunch in town, then Praia do Camilo from two to four, when the air is at its 72.3°F best and 66.3°F water feels generous by comparison. Back at the lighthouse for the 7:00 p.m. sunset.
Day two goes east or west on the same coast road: Benagil and the cave coast one way, Sagres and the end of the country the other. If the forecast turns, trade the drive for Lagos itself, the walled lanes, the market and a long lunch, then the stairway again in the late afternoon once the band has passed. With 6.7 wet days in the month, most days still hand you a workable window somewhere between breakfast and dark.
Ponta Da Piedade in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 76.8°F | 72.3°F | 66.2°F |
| Average low | 62.1°F | 59.0°F | 53.1°F |
| Rainfall | 0.73 in | 2.42 in | 3.23 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 2.5 | 6.7 | 8.4 |
| Sea, mean of daily maxima | 64.2°F | 66.3°F | 64.4°F |
September is the warm month and the dry one: 76.8°F by day, 0.73 inch of rain, 2.5 wet days. October costs 4.5 degrees off the high and more than triples the rainfall, to 2.42 inches over 6.7 days. November takes another 6.1 degrees off the afternoon and 5.9 off the night, down to 53.1°F, with rain on 8.4 days. The sea does not track the air at all: 64.2°F, then 66.3, then 64.4, all from the marine model rather than the IPMA station.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy 4.5 degrees of daytime air, four fewer wet days and a near-dry month, while giving up 2.1 degrees of water and meeting the tail of the summer season. Move four weeks later and the water is almost unchanged at 64.4°F, but the afternoon loses 6.1 degrees and the wet days climb by nearly two. Our September page runs the same figures from the other side.
Is October a good time to visit Ponta Da Piedade?
Yes for walkers, photographers and swimmers who want the Algarve’s landmark coastline at 72.3°F with water at 66.3. No for a trip whose whole point is seven consecutive beach days, because rain on roughly one day in five will claim at least one of them, and no for anyone who needs bathwater: the Atlantic here never provides it. Families with small children will find the sea colder than the brochure photographs imply.
If the answer is no, choose September over November. September holds 76.8°F, cuts the rain to 0.73 inch across 2.5 days, and the sea at 64.2°F is only two degrees behind October’s. The trade is company at the tail of the high season and whatever that does to rates, neither of which we can put a number on. The twelve-month view sets the rest of the country against the same calendar.
Of these three months, only October pairs a 66.3°F sea with a 72.3°F afternoon, and that combination is what lets the same day hold a cliff walk and a swim.
The last word
Book three nights instead of two and let the forecast choose which morning goes to the boats. One figure worth holding: a genuine soaking, 0.39 inch or more in a single day, turns up on only 1.8 days in an average October, so most of that 2.42-inch total arrives as passing bands. Walk down the stairway early, eat late in Lagos, and keep the second morning uncommitted.
