PONTA DA PIEDADE · SEPTEMBER · THE ALGARVE
September hands the headland back to people who like walking. The ochre stacks and sea arches south of Lagos get the full Atlantic light, the afternoon settles at an average high of 76.8°F, and the rain mostly stays offshore: 0.73 inches for the whole month at the national weather service station that covers this coast.
What the date buys is a gap between two seasons. The sea has warmed to 64.2°F after a summer of slow heating, the air has come off its August peak by under two degrees, and October’s 2.42 inches of rain is still four weeks away. What the date costs you is the guarantee: 2.5 wet days now appear on the calendar where August had almost none.

SEPTEMBER AT A GLANCE · PONTA DA PIEDADE
Come in September for 76.8°F afternoons, a sea finally up to 64.2°F and under an inch of rain, and keep one morning spare in case the sea state cancels the boats.
HIGH 76.8°F · SEA 64.2°F · 2.5 RAIN DAYS · 12H 27M OF DAYLIGHT ON THE 15TH
Go for: clifftop walking that works at noon, a sea that has caught up to 64.2°F, 0.73 inches of rain across the month, and light that holds until 19:44 mid-month.
Think twice before: building the trip around boats. Out here the sea state decides, and we found no wave-height series to put odds on it.

Beds, boat operators, the drive in from Faro and the town’s restaurants belong to our Lagos guide. The regional picture sits in the Algarve guide, and the twelve-month call for the country lives in when to visit Portugal. Everything below is dated: what the fifteenth of September does to the water, the light and the plan.
Ponta da Piedade weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | September value | Source period |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 76.8°F | 1991-2020 normals |
| Average low | 62.1°F | 1991-2020 normals |

Every figure here comes from one instrument: IPMA station 533 at Sagres, 22.9 meters above the sea, reading the 1991-2020 normals. September there averages a high of 76.8°F, a low of 62.1°F and 0.73 inches of rain. That is a real thermometer on a real headland rather than a model grid cell, and it carries its own warning. Sagres is the windiest point on this coast, and higher ground inland runs colder and a good deal wetter than these numbers promise.
Rain reaches the gauge on 2.5 days in an average September, counting any day with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch). Call it one wet day in twelve. Heavier weather is rarer: 0.6 days reach 10 mm (0.39 inch), so a genuine soaking lands in roughly three Septembers out of five. Before you set this against a US forecast table, note that IPMA counts from 1 mm while American tables usually start at 0.10 inch. The two totals are not interchangeable.
Between the 62.1°F night and the 76.8°F afternoon sits 14.7°F of swing, and on an exposed headland the wind adds its own vote. Daytime kit is shorts and sun cover. A terrace dinner above the water wants a long sleeve, and so does anyone out on the cliff path at first light. Pack a windbreaker as well: the stacks funnel the breeze even on a bright, still-looking day. Our packing guide covers the rest of the suitcase.
On September 15 the sun clears the horizon at 07:17 and sets at 19:44 local time (06:17 and 18:44 UTC), for 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight. That fits a boat morning, a long lunch out of the heat, a swim and a walk back, with the west-facing stacks taking their best color in the hour before that sunset.
Can you swim in Ponta da Piedade in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off the headland averages 64.2°F in September in the Open-Meteo marine record, over the years 2015 to 2024. Read the number carefully, because it is the mean of daily maxima, not a round-the-clock average. It therefore sits a shade above the true 24-hour figure, and a 07:30 swim will meet water slightly cooler than 64.2°F.
In practice that is bracing Atlantic water. Expect a sharp intake of breath at the waist and a body that settles after a minute or two. Strong swimmers will happily cross between the stacks; children and anyone who feels the cold will be out fast and grateful for a towel in the 76.8°F air. A shorty wetsuit turns a quick dip into an hour, and the kayak and paddleboard crews wear one for exactly that reason.
Wind and swell are the part we cannot quantify. We found no wave-height series for this stretch of coast, so we give no swell figures. What IPMA does tell us is that Sagres, the station behind these normals, is the windiest point on the coast, and that out here the state of the sea rather than the air temperature decides whether a boat leaves the marina. Ask the operator the evening before, then again at breakfast.
How busy is Ponta da Piedade in September? Crowds, prices and the end of the high season
September sits at the tail of the Algarve high season rather than outside it. European school terms restart through the first half of the month, and the Lagos waterfront thins out noticeably once they do. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the town, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. The shift described here is a shift in the school calendar, and it shows up on the clifftop paths before it shows up anywhere else.
How far ahead to book is the one question our sources cannot answer: no booking-window data reached us. The weather answers it sideways instead. With 2.5 wet days on the month and a sea state that cancels grotto trips without notice, a refundable room and a spare afternoon are worth more in September than a bargain locked in last winter. Put the boat on your first morning so a cancellation still leaves two mornings in hand.
We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for Lagos, so we quote no per-night amount. Ask at check-in what the town levies, per person and per night, and whether your booking already includes it. Our trip-cost guide handles the rest of the budget.
One upgrade genuinely changes the month: sleeping within walking distance of the cliff path. A room on the Ponta da Piedade side of Lagos puts both the 07:17 sunrise and the 19:44 light inside a walk, instead of a drive and a parking search at each end of a 12-hour-27-minute day. Those two hours are the reason to come in September at all.
Things to do in Ponta da Piedade in September: Praia do Camilo, the lighthouse and the grottoes

This is the month when both halves of the day work. August air runs 78.6°F and turns a midday cliff walk into a chore. October brings 2.42 inches of rain across 6.7 wet days and takes the reliability away. In between, 76.8°F and 0.73 inches let you walk the headland at noon and swim afterward, with the caves and stacks still reachable by small boat, kayak and paddleboard right through the month.
The headland itself is the attraction: a lighthouse on the point, a cluster of ochre stacks and arches below it, and a stone stairway dropping to the landing stage where the small boats load. Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana sit just north, each reached by a wooden staircase from the clifftop, both swimmable at that 64.2°F. The coast path runs back toward Lagos marina. For the cathedral cave up the coast, our Benagil guide has the access rules.
The rock does not change month to month, and the water barely does: 62.1°F in August, 64.2°F in September, 66.3°F in October. It is the air that moves. In August you step out of 78.6°F air into water 16.5°F colder. In September that gap is 12.6°F. By October it narrows to 6.0°F, and the rain arrives alongside it. September is the month with warm air over a sea that has finally caught up.
Walking costs nothing here. The lighthouse approach, the viewpoints strung along the headland and the coast path toward Lagos are open ground, and the beaches below them are public. Parking charges at the point we could not verify, so arrive on foot from town if you would rather not find out.
Ponta da Piedade in September: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 07:17 puts you on the headland with the stacks going pink and the lot still empty, and an hour up there is enough. Breakfast in Lagos, then the first boat or kayak of the morning through the grottoes, while operators are still running to schedule. Eat lunch indoors through the 76.8°F peak. Mid-afternoon, take the staircase down to Praia do Camilo for the 64.2°F swim and dry off in the sun. Walk the coast path back for the 19:44 sunset.
Day two goes wider: Praia Dona Ana early, the old town and the market late morning, then either a second swim or the drive west toward Sagres, where the station behind all these numbers sits. If one of the 2.5 wet days lands on you, swap the boat for the town, because grotto trips are the first thing a rough sea cancels. A rained-off morning costs nothing if the booking was refundable, and at 0.73 inches for the whole month the sky rarely stays shut all day.
Ponta da Piedade in September vs August and October
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain | Days with 0.04 in or more | Sea (daily-max mean) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| August | 78.6°F | 63.3°F | 0.06 in | 0.4 | 62.1°F |
| September | 76.8°F | 62.1°F | 0.73 in | 2.5 | 64.2°F |
| October | 72.3°F | 59.0°F | 2.42 in | 6.7 | 66.3°F |
Across the three months the air falls 6.3°F from August to October while the sea climbs 4.2°F, and the rain does the dramatic part: 0.06 inches in August, 0.73 in September, 2.42 in October. Wet days follow the same curve, from 0.4 to 2.5 to 6.7. September’s afternoon is 1.8°F cooler than August’s and 4.5°F warmer than October’s, and its water is warmer than August’s by 2.1°F. Air temperatures come from IPMA; the sea figures come from the marine record.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain near-certain sun, 0.4 wet days, and lose 2.1°F of sea warmth along with any hope of an uncrowded staircase in school-holiday season. Shift four weeks later and the water reaches its best of the three at 66.3°F, but you pay 2.42 inches of rain, 6.7 wet days, and evenings that start at a 59.0°F low. Our August page makes the earlier case in full.
Is September a good time to visit Ponta da Piedade?
Yes, for walkers, photographers and anyone whose day is built around light rather than a lounger. The 07:17 sunrise is reachable, the 76.8°F afternoon is walkable, and 2.5 wet days is a risk most trips absorb without noticing. No, for swimmers raised on Caribbean water: 64.2°F is genuinely cold, and no amount of sunshine changes it. No, too, for anyone who needs the boat to run on a fixed date, since the sea decides that and we have no swell record to reassure you.
If the cold water is the deal-breaker, wait for October and its 66.3°F sea, then accept 2.42 inches of rain and 6.7 wet days as the price. If reliable sun matters more than anything, go back to August, where the gauge records rain on 0.4 days, and book early enough to survive the school holidays.
September is the only one of the three that pairs a 76.8°F afternoon with a sea already up to 64.2°F and rain still under an inch.
The last word
Book the room you can walk from, keep the boat refundable, and treat the first morning as the one that matters: on the fifteenth you have 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight to spend and the stacks look their best at both ends of it. One number to carry with you before you pack. September’s average night here is 62.1°F, exactly the temperature the sea was holding all through August, so the jumper you need after dinner is warmer than last month’s water.
