SOUTH WALTON · JANUARY · THE MONTH GUIDE
A January noon on the 30A sand reads 63.1°F, and the Gulf lapping at it reads 60.4°F. That pairing settles the swimming question before you ask it, and leaves the rest of the month wide open: 26 miles of beach, five state parks and 15 coastal dune lakes, all in air cool enough to walk for hours.
So a January trip here is built around a coastline rather than a swim. The question worth answering before you book is whether four nights of beach walking, park trails and a drive along Scenic Highway 30A is the vacation you had in mind, or whether shifting four weeks in either direction buys you a better one. The numbers for all three months are below.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH WALTON · JANUARY
Come in January for 26 miles of walkable beach at 63.1°F and five state parks in cool, bright air, and come knowing the Gulf has fallen to 60.4°F.
AVERAGE HIGH 63.1°F · SEA 60.4°F · 5.6 RAIN DAYS · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: long beach walks in mid-60s air, the five state parks, the 15 coastal dune lakes, and a 30A drive that links 16 beach neighborhoods.
Think twice before: building the trip around swimming: the Gulf averages 60.4°F, and 3.2 nights in an average January fall to 32°F or below.

Every figure here carries a named source, and two of them deserve a label up front. The air normals are NOAA station data, measured by a real instrument at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, west of the 30A neighborhoods. The sea figure comes from a marine model, not from a buoy off your own beach. For the wider calendar, our best time to visit Florida guide takes the twelve-month view, and the Florida orientation places the Panhandle against the state’s other regions.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publishes the 1991-2020 normals for station USW00053853, the thermometer at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. It gives January an average high of 63.1°F, an average low of 45.3°F and 4.52 inches of rain. That is an instrument on an airfield rather than a reanalysis grid cell, and it is the closest official record to the 30A beaches, which matters when a difference of two or three degrees decides whether you pack a fleece.
Those 4.52 inches arrive across 5.6 days that record at least a tenth of an inch, so measurable rain lands roughly one day in five. One day in an average January delivers an inch or more. That is the day that rewrites a plan rather than dampening it, and on a five-night stay you should expect to spend one afternoon doing something with a roof over it.
The gap between the 63.1°F afternoon and the 45.3°F dawn is 17.8°F, and 3.2 nights in an average January drop to 32°F or below. Pack for two climates in one day: a fleece and a windproof shell for the early beach and the walk to dinner, shirtsleeves for the middle hours, and dry shoes for feet that have been on wet sand. A swimsuit is optional this month. A hat that stays put in a sea breeze is not.
On January 15 the sun rises at 6:40 a.m. and sets at 5:07 p.m. Central time, for 10 hours 27 minutes of daylight. South Walton runs on Central while Miami and Orlando run on Eastern, so the afternoon ends earlier than visitors from the peninsula expect. Put the long walk between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and treat five o’clock as the hour the coast goes dark and dinner begins.
Can you swim in South Walton in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The Gulf off South Walton averages 60.4°F in January, from the Open-Meteo Marine model over 2015-2024. Read that number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. The water you wade into at 8 a.m., before the sun has worked on the shallows, is under 60.4°F rather than at it.
At that temperature the Gulf is a cold-water swim, not a beach swim: a sharp intake of breath on entry, a short stay, and wetsuits doing the work for surfers and paddlers. The quirk of a South Walton January is how close the two readings sit. An afternoon high of 63.1°F stands only 2.7°F above the sea, so barefoot wading at the tide line costs less courage than the calendar suggests. Families traveling with small children will use the rental’s heated pool far more than the shoreline.
We found no January wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we give no figures for either. What we can date is the risk that is absent: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, per the National Hurricane Center, and January falls outside it entirely. Rip currents and beach flags still apply in any month, and our Florida safety guide is the place for water and road risk.
How busy is South Walton in January? Crowds, rental prices and the 11% tax
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Walton County, so we crown no month cheapest or busiest. What the calendar carries can be dated: January opens after the New Year week, closes before the spring school breaks, and sits outside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season that shadows so many fall bookings on this coast. That last point is the one solid argument for a winter trip here.
No booking-window data reached us either, so we will not invent a number of weeks. The decision that genuinely shapes a January trip is which of the 16 beach neighborhoods you sleep in, because 26 miles of coastline separates a base you can walk to dinner from one you have to drive from. Four nights is our own call for a first visit: two for the beach and the parks, one for the 30A corridor, one held back for weather. Our Florida lodging guide takes the wider view.
One rate is published and does not move with the season. Walton County levies a 5.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax, per form DR-15TDT from the Florida Department of Revenue. That is 11% on top of the nightly rate in January exactly as in July, so compare two quotes after tax, not before.
If you spend more on one thing this month, spend it on a heated pool or a proper indoor room to sit in. Gulf-front frontage buys a view worth having for a 5:07 p.m. sunset, and it buys very little swimming at 60.4°F. A rental car is the other outlay worth making: five state parks and 63 public beach access points are spread along the coast, and our getting around Florida guide sets out the driving case.
Things to do in South Walton in January: the state parks, 30A and the dune lakes

January is the month for covering ground on foot. A 63.1°F afternoon spread over 10 hours 27 minutes of daylight makes the whole length of a beach walkable without the heat that cuts summer plans short, and it turns a park trail at two in the afternoon into a pleasure rather than an endurance test. It is also a stretch of calendar with no tropical system to track, the season having closed on November 30.
Walton County holds five state parks: Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach, Deer Lake, Eden Gardens and Ponce de Leon Springs, per the Florida DEP Coastal Access Guide, which also counts 26 miles of sandy beach and 63 public access points. The county’s real oddity is its 15 coastal dune lakes, a landform found in only four other places on earth: Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar and Oregon. Scenic Highway 30A, designated a Florida Scenic Highway on April 9, 2008, strings the whole thing together.
What the date changes is the air, not the ground. A dune lake looks in January much as it looks in June, but the 17.8°F spread between dawn and afternoon rearranges the day around it: a 9 a.m. trailhead starts close to 45°F, while the same trail at noon is shirtsleeve walking. Go out mid-morning rather than at first light. We could not verify January hours or entry fees for the five parks, so check each one before you drive out.
The sand itself costs nothing: 26 miles of it, reached through 63 public access points, plus a sunset at 5:07 p.m. that needs no ticket. We could not verify which of those access points charge for parking, so keep a few dollars aside for a lot fee at the busier ones. Driving 30A end to end is free in any weather, and in January it doubles as the rain-day plan.
South Walton in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts indoors, because eight in the morning sits near the 45.3°F low. Coffee first, then Grayton Beach State Park from 10 a.m., as the air climbs toward 63.1°F. Lunch around one, Eden Gardens State Park for the early afternoon, and back onto the sand by 4:15 at one of the 63 access points, since the sun is gone at 5:07 and the temperature follows it down. Dinner after dark in whichever of the 16 beach neighborhoods you chose as a base.
Day two gives the morning to Topsail Hill Preserve and the afternoon to 30A, with Deer Lake on the way for a dune-lake stop. If the weather turns, and one January day in an average year drops an inch of rain or more, reverse the order: drive the corridor while it pours and save the walking for the clearing. Ponce de Leon Springs is the fifth park on the county’s list if two days somehow leave room.
South Walton in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 65.6°F | 63.1°F | 65.8°F |
| Average low | 47.5°F | 45.3°F | 47.9°F |
| Precipitation | 4.72 in | 4.52 in | 4.96 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.5 | 5.6 | 5.3 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 65.9°F | 60.4°F | 62.1°F |
January is the coldest of the three and, by a slim margin, the driest. Its 63.1°F high runs 2.5°F under December and 2.7°F under February, and its 45.3°F low is the lowest of the trio. Rainfall totals 4.52 inches against December’s 4.72 and February’s 4.96, though February logs the fewest wet days at 5.3, with January at 5.6 and December at 6.5. The Gulf is where the gap opens: 60.4°F in January, 65.9°F in December, 62.1°F in February, all from the same marine model.
Shift four weeks back and you gain 5.5°F of sea temperature and a warmer afternoon, and you take on the holiday weeks and nearly one extra wet day. Shift four weeks forward and February returns 2.7°F on the high, 1.7°F on the water and the fewest rain days of the three, at the cost of half an inch more total rain. Neither move buys a swim: 62.1°F is still cold water, and December’s 65.9°F is a brisk one.
Is January a good time to visit South Walton?
Yes, if the beach you want is one you walk. Couples, off-season drivers, trail walkers and anyone happy to cover 26 miles of sand in a fleece will get exactly the month they booked, with five state parks and a scenic corridor thrown in. No, if the center of the trip is swimming, or if you are traveling with small children and the rental has no heated pool, or if you need warm evenings, because the dawn reading averages 45.3°F and hits freezing on 3.2 nights.
If that lands as a no, February is the modest upgrade and the months beyond it are the real one. February gives 65.8°F afternoons, the fewest wet days of the winter three at 5.3, and a Gulf at 62.1°F, all on the same coastline and under the same 11% tax. For water you would actually swim in, look well past this window, and our twelve-month Florida verdict says where the warm sea is in the meantime.
Of the three winter months, January alone pairs the lowest rainfall total, 4.52 inches, with the coolest afternoons at 63.1°F, which is the exact combination that makes a 26-mile beach walkable from one end to the other.
The last word
Book January if the plan is a coast to walk, and book a place with a heated pool if anyone small is coming along. One loose end we could not tie up: Florida’s own scenic-highway documents give the 30A corridor as 24 miles in one place and 28 in another, and nothing we read reconciles the two. Drive it anyway, in either direction, stopping at as many of the county’s 15 dune lakes as a 5:07 p.m. sunset allows.
