PONTA DA PIEDADE · THE MAY GUIDE · ALGARVE COAST
May is the month the Algarve light gets long before the water gets warm. The ochre stacks of Ponta da Piedade sit an easy walk from Lagos, and by mid-month the sun is still up at 8:38 pm local time. The sea reads 62.2°F, cold enough that most swims off this headland are short and loud.
What the date gives is 70.7°F afternoons and 3.9 days of measurable rain, against 5.7 in April. What it withholds is June’s water. Shift four weeks in either direction and the sea barely stirs, while the daytime air moves 4.3 degrees each time.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · PONTA DA PIEDADE · MAY
May buys you 70.7°F afternoons, fewer than four wet days and light until 8:38 pm, with a sea at 62.2°F that stays a swim for the willing rather than the comfortable.
AVG HIGH 70.7°F · 3.9 RAIN DAYS · SEA 62.2°F · SUNSET 8:38 PM
Go for: clifftop walking at noon, grotto boats on calm mornings, and two hours of usable evening light after seven.
Think twice before: planning a lying-still beach week: the water is 8.5 degrees colder than the air, and Sagres is the windiest point of this coast.

Most US travelers fly into Faro and drive west; our flights guide covers the routings and the car guide the tolls. For the town at the foot of the headland, see Lagos, and for how Portugal’s months rank against one another, the 12-month verdict. The May normals that follow come from a station 20 miles down the coast, and that matters more than it sounds.
Ponta Da Piedade weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days
| May at Sagres station (1991-2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 70.7°F |
| Average low | 57.0°F |
| Precipitation | 0.87 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 3.9 |
| Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more | 0.5 |
| Sea surface, mean of daily maxima | 62.2°F |
| Daylight on May 15 | 14 h 13 min |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere: station 533 at Sagres, a real thermometer at 22.9 m rather than a model grid cell, averaged over 1991 to 2020. May runs an average high of 70.7°F, an average low of 57.0°F and 0.87 inches of rain. One caveat travels with those numbers. Sagres is the windiest point of this coast, and the high ground inland is colder and a good deal wetter, so pack for a clifftop and not for a mountain trail.
Rain reaches the gauge on 3.9 days in an average May, counted at IPMA’s own threshold of 1 mm, or 0.04 inch. That works out to measurable rain roughly one day in eight, and it usually arrives as a morning shower rather than a lost day. Something heavier, 10 mm or 0.39 inch inside a day, lands on 0.5 days: one May in two gets a single soaking. US tables count from 0.10 inch, so their day totals and these are not interchangeable.
Between the 70.7°F afternoon and the 57.0°F dawn sits 13.7 degrees of spread, and the headland gives the wind nothing to break against. A fleece and a windproof shell belong in a May bag next to the shorts you will wear from eleven to seven. Our packing guide handles the rest of the suitcase.
On May 15 the sun clears the horizon at 6:25 am local time and sets at 8:38 pm, for 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org publishes 05:25 and 19:38 UTC; Portugal runs an hour ahead in May). Dinner at nine still catches the blue half-hour, and a walk along the rim at seven in the evening is a full-light walk rather than a race.
Can you swim in Ponta Da Piedade in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off the headland averages 62.2°F in May, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024. That number is the mean of daily maxima, which makes it a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water. Whatever your foot reports at eight in the morning, it is reading below 62.2°F.
At 62.2°F the water is swimmable without being comfortable. Expect the sharp intake on entry and a short swim rather than a long float, and expect children to last less time than adults. A shorty wetsuit changes the whole day for anyone planning to snorkel around the stacks. Sunbathers fare better than swimmers this month, with the air running 8.5 degrees warmer than the sea.
Wind is the variable IPMA’s own note flags: Sagres is the windiest point of this coast, and on a marginal morning the sea state, not the air temperature, decides whether the grotto boats leave the dock. We found no wave-height or wind-speed series for the headland, so we give no number for it. Ask at the dock the evening before and keep the boat as the movable piece of the day. For the cave circuit further east, see Benagil.
How busy is Ponta Da Piedade in May? Crowds and prices
May falls between quiet early spring and the school-holiday summer, which is a calendar fact rather than a price one. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Lagos or the headland, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. What we can date is the weather: 3.9 wet days against April’s 5.7, and 70.7°F against April’s 66.4.
Book what you can cancel. We could not verify a booking-window figure for May, so no number of weeks appears, and a refundable rate is the sensible answer to an unverified lead time. Town-by-town options sit in our where-to-stay guide, and the Algarve overview places Lagos next to Carvoeiro, Albufeira and Sagres.
Some Portuguese municipalities charge a tourist tax per person per night on top of the room rate. We could not verify a current rate for Lagos, so we give no amount and no percentage. Budget a small nightly line on the bill and let our trip-cost guide handle the wider arithmetic.
The one place where spending more genuinely changes May is the water. A small-group or private boat booked with free cancellation buys the right to move a blown-out morning to the next calm window, and on a coast where the sea state calls the shots, that flexibility is the actual product. We found no published fares for the grotto operators, so compare quotes at the dock rather than trusting a figure from us.
Things to do in Ponta Da Piedade in May

May hands over the clifftop. At 70.7°F the rim path walks comfortably at noon, while June’s 75.0°F turns the same stretch into a morning-only proposition and April’s 5.7 wet days make it a gamble. Add light until 8:38 pm and the month delivers two golden hours that neither neighbor offers in the same package.
The headland itself is the attraction: the lighthouse on the point, the stair cut down the cliff to the boat landing, and the rim path running north toward Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana. Lagos, with its walls and its marina, is the base nearly everyone walks or drives from. We quote no admission prices for any of it, having verified none.
What the month changes is the air, not the water. The sea gained 0.4 degrees on April’s 61.8°F, while the daytime air climbed 4.3. Stone steps and exposed paths that felt raw four weeks ago are pleasant now, and the turquoise you look down on is essentially April’s turquoise. Walk in the middle of the day and swim in the warmest hour, early afternoon.
Free in May: the rim path, the stair and the viewpoints over the stacks. We found no gate and no ticket desk for them. The month also adds daylight at no charge, 14 hours 13 minutes on the 15th, and the late end of it is the best part, when the stacks go copper after eight.
Ponta Da Piedade in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs off a 6:25 am sunrise. Walk the rim path out of Lagos between 8 and 10, while the low sun is still inside the arches and the air sits nearer 57°F than 70. Take the stair down to the landing mid-morning. Lunch in town out of the wind, then Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana from 1 to 4, the warmest stretch of the day and the best hour for 62.2°F water. Be back on the point by 7:45 for the 8:38 sunset.
Day two is the boat morning, with the afternoon left loose. If the one-day-in-eight shower arrives, it tends to arrive as a shower: move into Lagos, its market and its churches, then try the headland again at five with more than three hours of light in hand. If wind rather than rain is the problem, the rim path still walks, since the sea state stops boats long before it stops feet.
Ponta Da Piedade in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 66.4°F | 70.7°F | 75.0°F |
| Average low | 53.6°F | 57.0°F | 61.2°F |
| Precipitation | 1.37 in | 0.87 in | 0.15 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 5.7 | 3.9 | 0.7 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 61.8°F | 62.2°F | 65.3°F |
April to June is an 8.6-degree climb in daytime air, taken in two even steps: 66.4°F, 70.7°F, 75.0°F. Rain drops faster than the air rises, from 1.37 inches over 5.7 wet days to 0.87 over 3.9, then to 0.15 over 0.7. The sea lags all of it at 61.8°F, 62.2°F and 65.3°F, each read as a mean of daily maxima from the Open-Meteo marine series rather than from the IPMA station.
Move four weeks earlier and April costs you 4.3 degrees of afternoon air and hands you 1.8 extra wet days, with water within half a degree of May’s. Move four weeks later and June adds 3.1 degrees of sea, cuts the wet days to 0.7 and brings the first summer arrivals. We verified nothing on price for any of the three, so treat this as a weather choice and nothing else.
Is May a good time to visit Ponta Da Piedade?
Yes for walkers, photographers and anyone whose day runs on daylight rather than water temperature. Afternoons at 70.7°F, fewer than four wet days and light until 8:38 pm make a strong hand. No for swimmers who want warm water, and no for a beach week measured in hours lying still: 62.2°F and a headland breeze will have you off the towel by four.
For that second reader, June settles it: 75.0°F air, 65.3°F sea and 0.7 days of measurable rain against May’s 3.9. The price is company, since June runs into the summer build-up along this coast, and the grotto boats get correspondingly busier.
What May alone puts on the table is the combination: 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight at only 70.7°F, with April’s rain already mostly gone.
The last word
Book the boat for a morning you can move, walk the rim before ten, and let the stair decide how brave you feel about the water. One last figure to carry down it: at dawn the sea, at 62.2°F, sits 5.2 degrees warmer than the air at 57.0°F, so the first swimmer of the day is often warmer than the walker watching from the top.
