Carvoeiro in August: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How It Compares to July

August is the month this coast was built for, and the month it fills. Carvoeiro’s afternoons run to an average high of 84.6°F, the gauge collects 0.12 inches of rain across the entire month, and on August 15 the sun is still up at 8:24 p.m. local time. The catch is in the water: the Atlantic off the village averages 66.8°F, which is not the Mediterranean, and the first thirty seconds will explain that better than any paragraph.

You have already picked the village. What August decides is the shape of the day: beach and boardwalk early, shade in the middle, swimming and dinner late. The wider picture of where to sleep and whether to drive lives in our Carvoeiro guide and the car guide.

August hands Carvoeiro its warmest afternoons and its longest usable evenings, and asks for an earlier booking and a tolerance for 66.8°F water in return.

Go for: dry afternoons, a 13-hour-37-minute day, evening swims when the sand has emptied, and boat weather on the cliffs at Benagil.

Think twice before: counting on warm water. At 66.8°F under 84.6°F air, the Atlantic here reads as a plunge, not a bath.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and from its 1991-2020 normals at station 554, Faro, a real thermometer 5 meters above the sea rather than a model grid cell. August averages a high of 84.6°F and a low of 67.8°F, with 0.12 inches of rain for the whole month. The caveat travels with the numbers: Faro sits east of Carvoeiro, the western half of this coast runs cooler and windier, and high ground inland is colder and far wetter than anything on the table.

An average August logs 0.2 days with at least 1 mm of rain, which works out to about one measurable day across five Augusts. Note the threshold: IPMA counts from 1 mm (0.04 inch), while American tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so the two counts are not interchangeable. In practice, rain in August is an hour you move a plan around, not a day you write off, and most visitors will see none at all.

Between the average low and the average high sits a spread of 16.8°F. Days ask for nothing but swimwear, shade and sunscreen. Evenings are the part people underpack for: at 67.8°F, with a breeze coming off a 66.8°F sea, a terrace at 10 p.m. wants a light layer. One long-sleeve shirt per person covers it, and our packing guide handles the rest of the suitcase.

On August 15 the village gets 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight. Sunrise is 05:47 UTC and sunset 19:24 UTC, which in Portuguese summer time means the sun is up at 6:47 a.m. and gone at 8:24 p.m. That late finish is the month’s real gift: the beach light softens around seven, the sand thins out, and dinner starts after dark without anybody rushing.

Can you swim in Carvoeiro in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 66.8°F in August, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. Read the fine print on that figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Other tables built on 24-hour averages will show a slightly lower number for the same month, and neither is wrong.

What that means at the water’s edge: an air temperature of 84.6°F and a sea of 66.8°F leave a gap of 17.8°F, and a body that has been baking on hot sand feels every degree of it. Children charge in and stay in. Adults tend to stand knee-deep, breathe, and commit. Once you are swimming it is comfortable for a good stretch, and the late-afternoon entry, when you are already warm, is easier than the eleven o’clock one.

We could not verify wind speed or swell height figures for Carvoeiro in August, so we give no numbers for either. What our weather source does state is worth carrying to the beach anyway: the western half of this coast runs cooler and windier than the Faro station where the thermometer sits, so a west-facing cove on a breezy afternoon can read cooler than 84.6°F suggests.

How busy is Carvoeiro in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

August is high summer on a coast that lives on high summer. European school holidays overlap through the whole month, and Carvoeiro is a village wrapped around one small cove, so the same number of visitors reads as busier here than it would in Albufeira. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the village, so we call no month the cheapest or the dearest of the year. The calendar peak is a fact. A price ranking would not be.

That changes the order of operations. Book the bed before the flight, because a village this size runs out of rooms long before Faro runs out of seats, and take a refundable rate if your dates can still move. Two to three months out is our own working rule for August here (est.), not a figure drawn from any booking data. If you want a specific cove or a terrace over the water, treat that as a spring decision rather than a summer one.

We could not verify a nightly tourist tax for Carvoeiro, so we quote no per-person, per-night amount and no cap. Ask the property to state it in writing when you book, and check whether it is already inside the quoted rate. Our trip-cost guide covers the rest of the budget line by line.

One upgrade genuinely changes August rather than just gilding it: a room with working air conditioning and its own shade. With afternoons averaging 84.6°F and the sea sitting at 66.8°F, the middle of the day is spent indoors or under something, and a pool covers the swimmers who find the Atlantic too sharp. Everything else can be economized. That part cannot.

Things to do in Carvoeiro in August: Algar Seco, the village beach and Benagil

A clifftop wooden walkway above eroded ochre rock formations and blue sea

August is the one month where the long day and the warmest water of the year land together. Daylight runs 13 hours 37 minutes on the 15th, the sea holds 66.8°F, and the sun does not set until 8:24 p.m. That combination buys a seven o’clock swim on a half-empty beach, which September cannot offer at the same temperature and April cannot offer at all.

The village beach sits at the bottom of the main street, small and sheltered, with the clifftop formations of Algar Seco a short walk east. West along the cliffs, Praia de Vale Centeanes gives more sand per person. The sea cave at Benagil and the stacks at Ponta da Piedade are the two boat targets, covered in our Benagil guide and the Ponta da Piedade guide. We could not verify 2026 boat fares or departure times, so we quote none here.

What August changes at those places is the air, not the water. The sea reads 66.8°F in July and August alike and slips only to 65.4°F in September, while the afternoon air drops from 84.6°F to 79.5°F over the same four weeks. So the cliff walks, which are unshaded, are an August morning job and a September all-day one, and the swim that feels bracing in September feels like relief in August.

The free half of the month is the good half: the beaches, the clifftop path between them, the rock terraces at Algar Seco, and the long low light from seven onward. We could not verify parking charges at the village lots, so we name no price for them. Arriving on foot from your bed solves the question entirely, which is the strongest argument for sleeping in the village itself.

Carvoeiro in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Out by 7:30, an hour after the 6:47 sunrise, for the clifftop walk east to Algar Seco while the rock is still cool. Down to the village beach by nine, first swim around ten, out before noon. Lunch and a flat two hours indoors through the 84.6°F peak. Back in the water at five, when the sand is emptying and your skin is warm enough to make 66.8°F easy. Sunset at 8:24, dinner after it.

Day two goes on the water: an early boat toward the Benagil coast, when the light is low on the cliffs, then a long afternoon at Vale Centeanes and an evening in Lagos if you have wheels. If the weather turns, and 0.2 rain days per August says it rarely does, invert the day: a late breakfast, the drive inland, and the swim pushed to six o’clock once the sky clears.

Carvoeiro in August vs July and September

Measure July August September
Average high 84.9°F 84.6°F 79.5°F
Average low 67.3°F 67.8°F 64.9°F
Precipitation 0.04 in 0.12 in 0.85 in
Days with 1 mm or more 0.2 0.2 1.9
Sea surface 66.8°F 66.8°F 65.4°F

July and August are near twins by day, 84.9°F against 84.6°F, with August the warmer of the two at night by half a degree. The sea is identical in both at 66.8°F. September is the month that moves: 5.1°F off the afternoon, 1.4°F off the water, and a rain column that jumps from 0.12 to 0.85 inches, with rain days going from 0.2 to 1.9, roughly nine times as many. Air normals come from IPMA, sea figures from the marine API.

Shift four weeks later and you gain a cliff walk you can do at two in the afternoon, plus a sea that has lost almost nothing at 65.4°F. You lose the guarantee of dry days and the very long evening, since the sun sets progressively earlier through September. Shift four weeks earlier and July gives you the same beach at the same water temperature with even less rain, and no relief at all on the crowd side.

Is August a good time to visit Carvoeiro?

Yes, for anyone whose dates are fixed by school holidays and whose priority is dry weather and long days. Against 0.12 inches of rain and 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight, August delivers exactly what it promises. It is the wrong month for travelers who want an empty cove, a quiet main street or an easy last-minute booking, and for anyone whose idea of a swim starts at 75°F.

If that second description fits, September is the shift to make. The afternoon drops to 79.5°F, which turns midday from a shade problem into a walking window, and the sea only slides to 65.4°F. The price is rain: 0.85 inches and 1.9 days at 1 mm or more, against 0.2 in August. That is still a coast you can plan a beach week around, with one rearranged afternoon built into it.

What no other month matches is the pairing: warmest water of the year at 66.8°F and light that holds until 8:24 p.m., so a full swim fits after the beach has emptied and before dinner has started.

The last word

Book the room with air conditioning, then plan the days around the sun rather than the clock: cliffs before nine, shade from one, water at five. One number worth carrying: IPMA logs 0.1 days per August with 10 mm (0.39 inch) of rain or more, which is about one August in ten getting a genuine downpour. Even then it costs you a lunch, not a holiday, and the sea will still be 66.8°F when it passes.
