Carvoeiro in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How It Compares to March and May

April is when the Algarve air warms and the sea barely follows. Carvoeiro’s afternoons average 69.3°F, the water off the cliffs averages 63.5°F, and the distance between those two numbers sets the shape of the trip: shirtsleeve walking above the sea, short swims in it, and a boat slot booked for the morning rather than the afternoon.

You have already picked the town. What April decides is how many days rain takes, how much evening light you get on the cliff path, and whether anyone in the group swims more than once. Every figure here is attributed where it is used: air from the national weather service’s 1991-2020 normals, water from a ten-year marine average. For the town itself, our Carvoeiro guide handles beaches and bases, and the Algarve guide covers the coast either side.

April gives Carvoeiro 69.3°F afternoons and just over 13 hours of daylight, and keeps the sea at 63.5°F: come for the cliff paths, the boats and the empty mornings, not for long swims.

The short version: 69.3°F afternoons, 5.3 days with measurable rain, 13 hours of daylight and a sea at 63.5°F that most visitors enter once and talk about all evening. Packing for the 54.3°F nights matters more than packing for the swim, and our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the kit.

These figures come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, which publishes 1991-2020 normals for station 554 at Faro: an average high of 69.3°F, an average low of 54.3°F and 1.54 inches of rain across the month. That is a real thermometer about 16 feet above sea level, not a reanalysis grid cell, and the distinction is worth a sentence. Faro sits east of Carvoeiro, and the western half of this coast runs cooler and windier. Read the normals below as a coastal reading for the eastern Algarve, and add layers for inland hills, which are colder and considerably wetter.

Rain falls on 5.3 days in an average April, roughly one day in six. Those counts use IPMA’s own threshold of 1 mm, 0.04 inch, not the 0.10-inch threshold most American tables use, so the two sets of numbers are not interchangeable. Spread 1.54 inches across 5.3 days and the average wet day carries about 0.29 inch, which is a grey morning and a usable afternoon far more often than a lost day. Pack for damp, not for a monsoon.

Fifteen degrees separate the 69.3°F afternoon peak from the 54.3°F dawn low, and that spread is where April packing usually goes wrong. Midday on the clifftop wants a T-shirt and a hat. Dinner on a terrace at nine o’clock, with wind coming off the Atlantic, wants long pants and a fleece. The luggage answer is three layers plus a light shell, and shoes with grip: limestone paths above the coves stay slick for an hour after rain.

Daylight on April 15 runs 13 hours 13 minutes, with the sun up at 06:55 and down at 20:08 local time. That buys a genuine second half of the day: a walk started at six in the evening finishes in light, and a table booked for eight starts in it. Anyone photographing the cliffs should note that the good hour lands around seven, well after the boats have come back in.

Can you swim in Carvoeiro in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 63.5°F in April in the Open-Meteo marine series for 2015-2024. One qualification changes how that number should be read: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. The water at eight in the morning is cooler than 63.5°F, and the water at four in the afternoon is the number you are looking at.

In practice, 63.5°F is a sharp intake of breath at the waist, five to ten minutes of real pleasure once you are in, and cold hands after twenty. Children give up faster than adults and should have a towel and a hooded top waiting on the sand. A shorty wetsuit changes the whole equation and turns a plunge into a session, which is why bodyboarders are in the water all month while sunbathers are watching them from dry rock.

On wind and swell we have nothing measured: our sources carry no April wave-height or wind series for this stretch, so we publish no figures for either. What IPMA does flag is that the western half of the Algarve coast runs windier than the Faro station, the direction of Lagos and Sagres. Sea state, not rain, is what moves a boat trip, and we could not verify individual operators’ cancellation terms for 2026, so ask at the counter when you book.

How busy is Carvoeiro in April? Crowds, prices and the run-up to the summer peak

April sits in the Algarve’s shoulder, after the winter quiet and before the July and August peak. That placement is a calendar fact. It is not a price fact: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Carvoeiro, so we crown no month cheapest and none most expensive. What you can count on is space, in the literal sense, on the cliff paths and at the beach bars that have already reopened for the season.

Booking behaves differently here than in a hotel town. Carvoeiro is villas and apartments more than towers, so the specific thing you want, ground floor with a pool, parking on site, two bedrooms within walking distance of the beach, disappears long before generic rooms do. Decide your one non-negotiable and book that first. Do the same with the car: our rental guide covers the traps, and the trip-cost page prices the rest of the week.

On lodging tax, we could not verify whether a municipal tourist tax applies to Carvoeiro stays in 2026, or at what rate, so we give no percentage. Check the fees line on your booking confirmation before you pay, and read know before you go for the paperwork that does apply to everyone.

If one line of the budget deserves the upgrade in April, it is the car rather than the room. With 5.3 wet days in the month and afternoons at 69.3°F, this is the month that rewards driving: a grey morning becomes a market in Lagos or the old town in Faro, and a clear one becomes a beach that no bus serves. A bigger trunk also swallows the wetsuits, the boards and the picnic that April weather makes necessary.

Things to do in Carvoeiro in April: Algar Seco, the boardwalk and the Benagil boats

The clifftop walking is what April gives and midsummer takes away. There is no shade on the Lagoa coast path, so 69.3°F with a sea breeze is close to the ideal temperature for the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, and the same walk in August is an endurance exercise. Spring also puts color on the scrub above the coves, which is the one visual difference a photographer notices between April and October.

The named targets, in walking order from town: Praia do Carvoeiro itself, the wooden boardwalk that climbs from the eastern end of the cove, and Algar Seco, the eroded rock terrace at the top of it, with its arches and its collapsed roof windows. Further along the coast sit Praia da Marinha and the sea cave at Benagil, both reachable by boat from the beach, and Ponta da Piedade by car. We could not verify 2026 boat fares or the current access rules for the cave, so we quote neither.

What April changes at those places is the air, not the water. The sea moves from 60.9°F in March to 63.5°F in April and 63.4°F in May, effectively flat, while the afternoon high climbs from 66.0°F to 69.3°F to 74.3°F. The gap between comfortable air and cold water is 5.8 degrees in April and nearly eleven by May, which is a polite way of saying that later in spring you will want to swim more and enjoy it about the same.

Plenty of the best of it costs nothing in April: the boardwalk, the rock terrace at Algar Seco, the coast path and the beaches themselves, which are public here as everywhere in Portugal. We found no April-only free-admission scheme for the area, so budget the paid parts, boats and sunbeds and parking lots, on their usual terms.

Carvoeiro in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one, on foot. Coffee at 08:00, when the air is still near the 54.3°F end of the range and the cove is empty. Walk the boardwalk to Algar Seco by 09:00 and carry on along the cliff path while the temperature is in the low sixties. Lunch in town around 13:00, out of the wind. Take the beach from 15:00 to 17:30, which is when the water is at the daily maximum that the 63.5°F average is built from. Sunset at 20:08 puts dinner in daylight.

Day two, on the water. Book the morning boat toward Benagil and keep the afternoon free as the fallback, because sea state decides these trips. If the day turns wet instead, and roughly one April day in six does, drive: the old town in Faro, the marina and streets of Lagos, or the long indoor lunch that April prices make tempting. Come back for the light at 19:00, since a wet morning here frequently ends in a clear evening.

Carvoeiro in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 66.0°F 69.3°F 74.3°F
Average low 51.4°F 54.3°F 59.0°F
Rainfall 1.84 in 1.54 in 1.03 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.6 5.3 3.8
Sea surface 60.9°F 63.5°F 63.4°F

Across the three months the air does all the moving. April runs 3.3 degrees warmer than March by day and 5.0 degrees cooler than May, while rainfall drops steadily from 1.84 to 1.54 to 1.03 inches and wet days go 5.6, 5.3, 3.8. The sea is the flat line: up 2.6 degrees from March into April, then 63.4°F in May, a tenth of a degree below April in the marine series. That difference is well inside the noise of a ten-year average, so treat April and May water as the same water.

Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 3.3 degrees of afternoon warmth for slightly more rain and a notably colder sea, with the compensation of the quietest cliff paths of the spring, as our March page sets out. Shift four weeks later and May hands you 74.3°F afternoons and only 3.8 wet days, at the cost of a coast visibly filling up on its way to summer, with no gain at all in water temperature.

Is April a good time to visit Carvoeiro?

Yes, if your trip is built on land. Walkers, photographers, boat-trip takers and anyone who wants a table without a reservation get the best version of this coast in April: 69.3°F, thirteen hours of light and paths you can walk at midday. No, if the trip is built on swimming. A family that pictured afternoons in the sea will meet 63.5°F water and spend the money on a wetsuit or on a pool instead.

If that is the deal-breaker, moving to May does not fix it: the marine average holds at 63.4°F, and only the air improves. Warm water on this coast arrives later in the year than May, beyond the months our figures cover, so anyone planning around swim temperature should start with our month-by-month verdict for Portugal rather than with these three months.

Of the three, April is the one that pairs thirteen hours of daylight with afternoons still under 70°F, which is exactly the combination the cliff paths were built for.

The last word

Book the boat for a morning, keep one day loose, and let the weather spend it. The normals put 1.3 days at 0.39 inch of rain or more in an average April, so one properly wet day is the reasonable expectation rather than a run of bad luck, and it is the day to drive east to Faro or west to Lagos instead of sitting it out in a rental with the shutters closed. Everything else in Carvoeiro this month happens outdoors, in good light, until eight in the evening.
