Carvoeiro in March: Weather, Sea Temperature and How It Compares With February and April

Carvoeiro in March is a walking month that photographs like a swimming one. The village sits in its cove, the cliffs turn gold by late afternoon, the terraces face the sun again, and the official thermometer at Faro reports an average high of 66.0°F. Then you put a foot in the water and the picture corrects itself: 60.9°F, the coldest of the three months around it.

So the question is not whether Carvoeiro is lovely in March, it is what the date costs you. The normals below cover the air, the rain days and the water, with a straight comparison against February and April, so you can decide whether to shift your week four weeks in either direction.

March buys you twelve hours of daylight and 66.0°F afternoons on the cliff path, and it charges you the swimming: the sea reads 60.9°F, cooler than it was in February.

AVERAGE HIGH 66.0°F · 5.6 RAIN DAYS · SEA 60.9°F · 12 HOURS OF DAYLIGHT

Go for: the clifftop boardwalk and the coast path at a temperature you can actually walk in, long light, and coves you can photograph without queueing for the staircase.

Think twice before: booking March as a beach week. At 60.9°F the sea is a wetsuit proposition, and the wet days come in ones and twos rather than in a monsoon.

March is the hinge month on this coast: the air has turned and the water has not caught up. The month before is covered in Carvoeiro in February, and the whole-country calendar sits in our best time to visit Portugal guide.

IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, publishes 1991–2020 normals for station 554 at Faro: average high 66.0°F, average low 51.4°F, 1.84 inches of rain across the month. Every figure here comes from that instrument, a real thermometer 5.0 m above sea level rather than a model grid cell. It also sits east of Carvoeiro, and the western half of the Algarve runs cooler and windier, while the hills inland are colder and considerably wetter. Treat these as a coastal reading, not a mountain one.

An average March records rain on 5.6 days, a little under one day in five. Of those, 1.6 go past 0.39 inch, the kind of downpour that keeps you under an awning for an hour. IPMA counts at 1 mm and 10 mm, not at the 0.10-inch mark American tables use, so these counts do not swap with a Florida figure. In practice: most March days here are dry, and the wet ones rarely take the whole day with them.

Between the 66.0°F afternoon and the 51.4°F small hours sits a 14.6-degree swing, and it lands hardest on the clifftop, where nothing blocks the wind coming off the water. Pack for two temperatures in one day: short sleeves for the walk out to Algar Seco, a fleece and a windproof shell for the terrace after dark. Our Portugal packing guide has the full list.

On March 15 the village gets about 12 hours 00 minutes of daylight, with the sun up at 6:40 a.m. and down at 6:40 p.m. local time. That is enough for a morning on the coast path and a boat slot after lunch without either being rushed, and it puts the last good light on the cliffs at the end of the working afternoon rather than in the middle of dinner.

Can you swim in Carvoeiro in March? The sea at 60.9°F

The sea surface off Carvoeiro averages 60.9°F in March, from the Open-Meteo marine model over 2015–2024. Read it with its definition attached, because it matters: that is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a full 24-hour average would. The honest version is that a sea peaking near 61 in the afternoon is cooler than that when you arrive at the steps at eight in the morning.

What 60.9°F does to a person: the first thirty seconds take your breath, the next five minutes are fine, and most visitors get to the waist, reconsider, and go back to the towel. Children last about a third as long as they claim they will. A shorty wetsuit changes the answer completely, and neoprene is standard winter kit up and down this coast, so a bodyboard morning at Carvoeiro or over at Lagos is perfectly reasonable in March.

We found no wind or wave series for March off Carvoeiro, so no figure for either appears above. The water record does say one useful thing though: March is the low point of the three months, below February’s 61.3°F on the same marine model, with April climbing to 63.5°F. The Atlantic lags the air by weeks, which is why those 66.0°F afternoons have not warmed the cove yet.

How busy is Carvoeiro in March? Crowds, booking and the tourist tax

March falls outside the Algarve’s summer, which is built on school holidays and charter flights in July and August. That much is calendar, not opinion. Beyond it we are cautious: we found no monthly occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Carvoeiro, so we crown no month the cheapest and quote no percentage. Expect a resort village keeping winter hours, and check that the restaurant you have your eye on is open on the night you want it.

We have no booking-window data for March here either, so we will not invent a number of weeks. One date does deserve a look before you assume the month is quiet: Easter moves between late March and April depending on the year, and we did not verify the date for yours. Look it up, then book flights. Our guide to flights from the US covers the routing into Faro.

On the tourist tax, the same discipline. Carvoeiro belongs to the municipality of Lagoa, and we could not verify whether a per-night tourist tax applies there or at what rate, so we give no amount. Ask the property at the time of booking, and do not assume the figure charged in Lisbon or Porto travels south with you.

The one line worth paying up on this month is the car. In August the walkable beach is the point; in March the walkable beach is 60.9°F, and everything that makes the trip is spread along the coast road, from Praia da Marinha to the western headlands. Our car rental guide covers the tolls and the insurance trap, and getting around Portugal handles the alternative if you would rather not drive.

Things to do in Carvoeiro in March: Algar Seco, Praia da Marinha and the Benagil boats

March hands you the walking. Limestone throws heat back at you in an Algarve summer, and the same clifftop at 66.0°F is a pleasure rather than an endurance test. Twelve hours of light means you can do a coast-path morning, eat properly, and still be somewhere with a view at 6:30 p.m. This is the version of Carvoeiro that people who live here prefer.

Start with the wooden boardwalk that runs east from Praia do Carvoeiro along the clifftop to Algar Seco, where staircases drop into carved sandstone, sea pools and a window in the rock. Further east, Praia da Marinha anchors the cliff walk toward Vale Centeanes. West of Lagos, Ponta da Piedade does the same trick with more drama. We could not verify March hours or boat fares for the Benagil cave operators, so no price appears here.

The rock does not change from month to month. The air does. Praia da Marinha in March gives you the same cliffs with none of the August parking scrum, and with the water at 60.9°F the cove is a viewpoint rather than a swim. Boat trips to the cave stay weather-dependent all winter, so if the cave is the reason you came, leave a spare day in the plan instead of booking it for your last morning.

The free column is the long one this month: the boardwalk, the staircases and rock pools at Algar Seco, the beach itself, the clifftop stretch between Vale Centeanes and Marinha, and the square at sunset, which in mid-March lands at 6:40 p.m. We verified no admission pricing for any attraction in Carvoeiro, so nothing above carries a ticket figure.

Carvoeiro in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Coffee in the square at 8:00, when the cove is still in shade and the air is closer to the 51.4°F overnight figure than to the afternoon. Boardwalk east at 9:00, Algar Seco and its staircases by 9:45, back down to the beach by 11:00. Lunch at 1:00, then take the warmest part of the day, roughly 2:00 to 5:00, for Praia da Marinha and the cliff path. Be back on a west-facing terrace by 6:15 for a 6:40 sunset.

Day two goes west: the headlands at Ponta da Piedade in the morning, Lagos old town for lunch, home along the coast. With 1.6 heavy days in an average March, decide the wet-weather swap before you need it: Faro gives you an indoor afternoon with a train or a short drive attached, and the rain here usually clears inside a few hours rather than settling in for the day.

Carvoeiro in March vs February and April

Measure February March April
Average high 62.6°F 66.0°F 69.3°F
Average low 47.8°F 51.4°F 54.3°F
Precipitation 1.65 in 1.84 in 1.54 in
Days at 0.04 in or more 5.4 5.6 5.3
Sea surface (daily maxima) 61.3°F 60.9°F 63.5°F

By day, March runs 3.4°F warmer than February and 3.3°F cooler than April, and the nights move the same way, 51.4°F against 47.8 and 54.3. Rain is where March loses: 1.84 inches is the wettest of the three, on 5.6 days against 5.4 and 5.3, though a fifth of a day is a rounding difference rather than a plan-changer. The water is the real surprise. At 60.9°F March reads below February’s 61.3, on the same marine model, while April adds 2.6°F on top.

Shift four weeks forward and you gain 3.3°F of afternoon, 2.6°F of sea, a third of an inch less rain and longer evenings, at the price of walking into Easter and the start of the season. Shift four weeks back and February hands you slightly warmer water and slightly drier skies, but costs you 3.4°F of daytime warmth and a visible slice of evening light. Our February page makes that case in full.

Is March a good time to visit Carvoeiro?

Yes, if you came for cliffs, coast paths, long lunches and photographs. A 66.0°F afternoon with twelve hours of light is close to ideal walking weather, and the coves are yours at a civilized hour. No, if the trip is built around swimming, snorkeling or a child who will not accept a beach without a sea. At 60.9°F the water rules itself out for most people within a minute.

If that second description fits, April is the move rather than a later February. It brings the sea to 63.5°F, the afternoons to 69.3°F and the rain down to 1.54 inches, which is the biggest single-month improvement in the sequence. Check where Easter falls first, then book. The rest of the coast is laid out in our Algarve guide.

What March alone gives is balance: exactly twelve hours of daylight on the 15th, a clifftop at 66.0°F, and water cold enough that nobody argues about going to the beach instead of walking.

The last word

Book March for the boots, not the towel, and give the wind layer a place in the bag. Close to three in ten of the month’s wet days deliver 0.39 inch or more, which is the difference between a shower you walk through and an afternoon you spend indoors, so keep one afternoon unbooked and hold Faro or Lagos in reserve for it. Then let the sea decide itself at 60.9°F, somewhere around knee height.
