Benagil in October: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Crowds

The sea off Benagil is warmer in October than it was in September. That looks like a misprint and it holds up: the marine record puts the surface at 67.3°F this month against 65.4°F in September, while the air has already stepped down from a 79.5°F average high to 73.9°F. The cliff path stops being a furnace, the cave still catches its column of morning light, and the water has spent all summer storing heat it gives back now.

What October takes back is dryness and daylight. Rainfall climbs from 0.85 inches in September to 2.20 inches, measurable rain falls on 6.0 days instead of 1.9, and the 15th gives you 11 hours 18 minutes of light. The boat to the cave answers to the swell rather than the calendar, so the month rewards anyone who keeps a spare morning in the plan.

October gives Benagil the warmest water of the three shoulder months and air you can actually walk in, in exchange for six wet days and a boat trip that answers to the sea state.

Go for: swimming at 67.3°F, cliff walking at 73.9°F instead of August heat, and long lunches on a coast whose school holidays are over.

Think twice before: pinning the cave to one fixed morning. Two days in an average October deliver 0.39 inch of rain or more, and nothing on this stretch measures the swell for you.

Every figure here comes from two very different instruments, and the difference matters. The air normals are read off a real thermometer, IPMA station 554 at Faro, 5 m above sea level and roughly 37 miles (60 km) east along the coast. The sea figure comes from a marine model, not a buoy. Neither one measures the swell at the cave mouth, and no station on this stretch does. For the coast either side of the date, our Algarve guide holds the wider picture.

Portugal’s national weather service publishes an October average high of 73.9°F and an average low of 60.4°F for this coast, on the 1991-2020 normals measured at its Faro station. That is a genuine thermometer sitting 5 m above the sea, not a reanalysis grid cell, which is worth knowing when a table elsewhere disagrees with this one by a couple of degrees. The same station records 2.20 inches of rain for the month. Inland and uphill, the Algarve’s own numbers diverge quickly: the serra is colder and considerably wetter than anything read at Faro.

Rain falls on 6.0 days in an average October, using the service’s 1 mm threshold (0.04 inch), and 2.0 of those days bring 10 mm or more (0.39 inch). In practice that is wet weather roughly one day in five, most of it arriving as a front that clears within hours, plus two days per month that genuinely cancel a boat. American tables usually count from 0.10 inch, so the numbers are not interchangeable with what you may have seen on a US site.

The gap between day and night runs 13.5°F, and on a coast that is all cliff and open water it shows up as a sharp evening. Pack for two climates in one day: swimwear and a sun shirt for a 73.9°F afternoon, a real layer and long trousers for dinner outside at 60.4°F. Shoes with grip matter more this month than in July, because the limestone paths above the coves hold water long after a shower has passed. Our packing guide covers the rest of the suitcase.

On October 15 the sun comes up at 7:38 a.m. and sets at 6:56 p.m. local time, giving 11 hours 18 minutes of usable light. The consequence for a day trip is blunt: an afternoon that starts at two has about five hours in it, and the cliff path is no place to be feeling your way in the dusk. Early starts stop being virtuous this month and start being arithmetic.

Can you swim in Benagil in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Yes, and the number behind that yes is 67.3°F, from the Open-Meteo marine record averaged over 2015-2024. One caveat travels with it: that average is built from daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above what a true 24-hour mean would give. Swim at eight in the morning and you are under it. Swim at four, after a clear afternoon, and you are at it or a touch above.

Mid-sixties water on the Atlantic is a proper intake of breath for the first thirty seconds, then perfectly swimmable for twenty or thirty minutes without anything on. Snorkelers who want an hour around the cove entrances will want a shorty. Children last less long than adults and should be handed a towel before they ask. It is still the warmest water of the three shoulder months, 1.9°F above September and 2.0°F above November.

Wind and swell are where our sources stop. No station on this stretch of coast measures the sea state, and that, rather than the rain gauge, is what decides whether a boat gets into the cave on any given morning. We can tell you the month brings two days of 0.39 inch or more, which usually travel with a front and its wind, and we can tell you that operators cancel on a lumpy sea under a blue sky. Call the boat the evening before, not the week before.

How busy is Benagil in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

School holidays across Portugal, Spain, the UK and Germany all finish before the month opens, and the Algarve’s summer machinery winds down behind them. October therefore sits in the shoulder, after the summer peak and before the winter quiet, which is a fact of the calendar rather than a claim about money. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Benagil or its municipality, so we crown no month the cheapest and none the busiest. The hamlet itself is tiny, one steep road down to one small beach, and it fills at midday whatever the season.

Two things still go early on a fine shoulder weekend: morning boat slots and the handful of beds in the village. We could not verify how far ahead operators fill, so we give no lead time in weeks. The workable shape is a base elsewhere on the coast, Carvoeiro or Lagos or Albufeira, flights into Faro, and a rental car, since the beach road is not a bus route you want to depend on. Flights from the US and the car guide handle both ends.

On the tourist tax, our cards are on the table: we could not verify a current lodging-tax rate for this municipality, so we quote no percentage and no nightly amount. Several Algarve councils levy one and several do not, and the figure changes by council decision rather than by season. Ask the property at booking, and budget the rest of the trip with our Portugal cost guide.

The single place where spending more genuinely changes the month is flexibility on the water. A small-boat or kayak slot on the first departure of the day, booked with free cancellation, buys you the two things October can take away: a calm sea and an empty cave. We could not verify operator fares for this stretch, so no figure goes next to that advice. Keep a second morning free in the itinerary and the two-days-per-month soaking costs you nothing.

Things to do in Benagil in October

October lets you do both halves of this coast in one day, which July does not. At 73.9°F you can walk a cliff path at noon without planning your own rescue, and at 67.3°F you can still get in the water afterward. August offers the swim and punishes the walk. November offers the walk and takes 2.0°F off the sea. The overlap is what makes this month worth booking for.

The cave, Algar de Benagil, is reached from the beach by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard, and its floor of sand under the roof opening is the image everyone comes for. Fifteen minutes west on foot, Praia da Marinha gives you the arch-and-stack view and a staircase down to the sand. East, the boardwalk and cliff path run toward Carvoeiro. Further along the coast, Ponta da Piedade repeats the trick in more dramatic form. We could not verify current fares or departure times for any of the cave operators, so none appear above.

What the date changes is the relationship between air and water, not the water itself. In September, 79.5°F air over 65.4°F sea leaves a 14.1°F gap and the Atlantic feels like a slap. In October the gap narrows to 6.6°F. By November the air has fallen to 67.3°F and sits just 2.0°F above the sea, at which point the water stops feeling cold and the beach stops feeling warm. October is the one month of the three where both sides of that equation are comfortable.

The free half of the month is the best half. Clifftop walking costs nothing, the viewpoint over the cave’s roof opening costs nothing, and the beaches themselves are public. We could not verify whether the parking above Benagil beach charges in October, so arrive early and assume it might. Beyond the shoreline, Faro and the market towns inland make the wet-day list without a ticket in sight.

Benagil in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Leave your base in the dark and be parked above the beach around sunrise, 7:38 a.m. on the 15th. Take the first boat or kayak out while the sea is at its flattest and the cave is not yet a queue. Swim from the beach before ten, when the 67.3°F water is at its most bracing and least crowded. Lunch late, walk the cliff path toward Praia da Marinha through the warmest part of the afternoon at 73.9°F, and be on the clifftop for a 6:56 p.m. sunset with a layer in the bag.

Day two goes west: Carvoeiro’s boardwalk, the stacks at Ponta da Piedade, a long lunch in Lagos. If the front arrives instead, this is the day to spend it, since 2.20 inches over the month mostly falls in bursts rather than all day. Drive inland to Silves or Faro for the covered markets, keep the boat slot for the following morning, and check the forecast at dinner. The two-day shape exists so that the cave has two chances at a calm sea rather than one.

Benagil in October vs September and November

Measure September October November
Average high 79.5°F 73.9°F 67.3°F
Average low 64.9°F 60.4°F 53.4°F
Rainfall 0.85 in 2.20 in 2.97 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 1.9 6.0 6.6
Sea surface (daily maxima) 65.4°F 67.3°F 65.3°F

Air falls 5.6°F from September to October and another 6.6°F into November, a steady slide of about a degree a week. Rain does not slide, it steps: 0.85 inches in September, then 2.20 in October, then 2.97 in November, with wet days jumping from 1.9 to 6.0 and then barely moving to 6.6. The sea refuses to follow either pattern, peaking at 67.3°F in the middle month and returning to 65.3°F by November.

Shifting four weeks earlier buys reliable sun, almost no rain and 5.6°F more warmth on the terrace, at the cost of cooler water, school-summer prices on this coast and midday heat on the cliff paths. Shifting four weeks later buys emptier beaches and the same sea you would have had in September, at the cost of 6.6 wet days, a 53.4°F night and light that is gone before seven. Our September page makes the earlier case in full.

Is October a good time to visit Benagil?

For swimmers, walkers and photographers, yes, without hedging. The warmest sea of the three shoulder months, air at 73.9°F, and the summer crowds gone home make a strong combination. For anyone who needs seven guaranteed beach days in a row, no: 6.0 wet days out of 31 is a one-in-five chance of losing any given afternoon, and two of those days will be heavy enough to stop the boats.

If that gamble is unacceptable, move to September rather than November. September brings 1.9 wet days against October’s 6.0 and 0.85 inches of rain against 2.20, and it keeps the air at 79.5°F. You give up 1.9°F of sea temperature and you accept the tail of the summer crowd, but the odds on a fixed-date cave trip improve sharply. Our country-wide month guide weighs the rest of Portugal at the same time.

No other month of the year puts a 67.3°F sea under 73.9°F air on this coast, and that six-and-a-half-degree gap is the whole argument for coming in October.

The last word

Book two mornings for the cave and you have already made the only decision October asks of you. Here is the figure that explains why it works: spread across those 6.0 wet days, the month’s 2.20 inches average out to roughly a third of an inch per rainy day, which is a front passing through rather than a week under cloud. Give the sea a second chance, keep the cliff path for the afternoons, and pack the layer for 60.4°F dinners outside.
