Benagil in February: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

Benagil in February is the same coast with the volume turned down. The cliffs above the Algar de Benagil are the ochre wall they are in August, the water still turns turquoise where the limestone drops away, and the village has room to park. IPMA’s Faro station puts the month at an average high of 62.6°F (17.0°C) and an average low of 47.8°F (8.8°C): jacket weather, with a real chance of shirt sleeves at noon.

What the date takes away is the water and the certainty. The sea off Benagil averages 61.3°F (16.3°C), and no station along this stretch measures the sea state, the one thing that decides whether a boat gets inside the cave on a given morning. What it hands back is space, a cliff path you can walk at midday, and the coast at its quietest before Easter. Where to sleep and how this fits a longer trip belong to our Algarve guide. February’s own numbers start below.

February gives you the Algarve’s best-known cliffs at 62.6°F with 5.4 wet days and almost nobody on the clifftop, and it gives you a 61.3°F sea that belongs to wetsuits.

Go for: the clifftop path between Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha in comfortable air, empty beaches, and a cave you may have largely to yourself.

Think twice before: booking a beach week for swimmers or children. The water sits at 61.3°F and nights average 47.8°F.

The sea runs backward against the air this quarter: 62.0°F in January, 61.3°F in February, 60.9°F in March, while the daytime air climbs from 61.3°F to 66.0°F.

One caveat before the figures: the nearest official thermometer is not in Benagil. It stands about 37 miles (60 km) east, and that distance is the reason we name it in every section rather than burying it in the sources.

Every air figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, and from one instrument: station 554 at Faro, 16 feet (5.0 m) above sea level, about 37 miles (60 km) east of the village. These are measured 1991-2020 normals, not a model grid cell. Terrain matters more than the distance does: the inland hills run colder and considerably wetter than this coastal reading, so nobody should pack for a mountain trail on Faro’s numbers. For the coast itself, plan around 62.6°F by day, 47.8°F at night and 1.65 inches of rain across the month.

Rain reaches the gauge on 5.4 days in an average February, counted at IPMA’s threshold of 1 mm (0.04 inch). American tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so the two sets are not interchangeable and a February that looks wetter on paper than a Florida month may not be. In practice that is measurable rain about one day in five. Most of those days are not washouts: a grey band comes through, the limestone turns slick, and the rest of the afternoon can be dry.

Between the average high and the average low sits 14.8°F, and the month spends it quickly after sunset. Midday on the clifftop can be shirt sleeves. The same clifftop at 7 p.m. is 47.8°F with a sea breeze added. Pack in layers, keep a waterproof shell at the top of the bag, and bring shoes with grip for wet rock. Our packing guide has the full winter list.

February 15 brings 10 hours 53 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 7:19 a.m. and sunset at 6:12 p.m. local time, Portugal staying on UTC through the winter. That means a late start and an early finish. No dawn alarm is required, the best light on the cliffs arrives before six, and dinner belongs after dark. Put boat time in the middle of the day and keep the last hour of light for the clifftop.

Can you swim in Benagil in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Benagil averages 61.3°F (16.3°C) in February, from the Open-Meteo marine series averaged over 2015 to 2024. The figure carries a detail worth knowing: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would give. Treat 61.3°F as the warmest the water gets in the afternoon, with the early morning cooler than that.

Most Americans will find that cold enough to cut a swim to a few defiant minutes, and a wetsuit changes the calculation entirely. Sea kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, the usual way into the cave from Praia de Benagil, are a different proposition again, since you sit above the water rather than in it. Anyone counting on real swim time should know the winter sea barely moves between months: 62.0°F in January and 60.9°F in March on the same marine series.

On wind and swell we have nothing to offer. No station on this stretch measures the sea state, and the sea state is exactly what decides whether a boat reaches the cave mouth on a given morning. We could not verify wave heights or cancellation rates, so we give no figures. Build in a spare morning, ask the operator the evening before, and treat the cave as a maybe. The clifftop opening above the Algar needs no boat at all.

How busy is Benagil in February? Low season crowds and booking ahead

February falls in the Algarve’s low season, which is a calendar fact rather than a price claim: it lands after the New Year and before Easter, in the stretch when the coast belongs mostly to residents, walkers and a thin file of winter visitors. The demand peak on this coast is high summer, and February is nowhere near it. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel rates we could verify, so we crown no month cheapest.

Low season changes what you book and in what order. A room in Carvoeiro or Lagos rarely needs months of lead time for a February long weekend. The two items worth locking first are the transatlantic flight and the rental car, because the car is what makes this stretch of coast usable at all. Our flights guide covers routes into Lisbon and Faro airport, and the car guide covers the tolls that catch Americans out.

On the tourist tax we have a gap and would rather name it: we could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Benagil, so we quote no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask at check-in, or read the fine print on the booking before you pay. Where Portuguese lodging taxes do apply, they are charged per person per night and collected by the property itself.

One upgrade changes February rather than decorating it: heating. Nights average 47.8°F, and plenty of Algarve rentals were built for July, with tile floors, thin walls and a wall unit doing double duty. Pay for a place with real heating, or a hotel with an indoor pool, and the whole month reads differently at eight in the morning. The sea view and the bigger terrace buy you much less at this time of year.

Things to do in Benagil in February: the cave, the cliff path and Praia da Marinha

Clifftop footpath above limestone arches and a small cove beach on a clear winter day

Start with the walking, because this is the season built for it. The clifftop route linking Praia de Vale Centeanes, the Algar de Benagil and Praia da Marinha runs without a scrap of shade, and 62.6°F is close to ideal for it, where the same path in July is an endurance event. February also thins out the fenced viewing spot above the cave roof, and puts the beaches back in the hands of people with dogs and cameras.

Praia de Benagil itself is the working beach, the slipway where kayaks and small boats set off for the cave just along the cliff. Praia da Marinha, the arch beach on every Algarve poster, sits a short walk east on the same path. West, Carvoeiro threads boardwalks along the cliffs above Algar Seco, and further on Ponta da Piedade stacks the same limestone into towers above Lagos.

The date changes the air at these places far more than the water. The sea moves by 1.1°F across the three months, from 62.0°F down to 60.9°F, while the daytime air climbs from 61.3°F in January to 66.0°F in March. A February visit is therefore a walking and looking trip at these beaches, with the swim gear left in the bag, and the clifftop tracks hold mud for a day or two after rain.

Almost everything named above is free. The cliff path, the viewpoint over the cave, the beaches and the Carvoeiro boardwalks cost nothing in February or any other month, and the 6:12 p.m. sunset needs no ticket. We could not verify off-season parking charges in the village, so budget for parking as you would in summer and treat a free space as a bonus.

Benagil in February: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on late light. Sunrise is at 7:19 a.m., so breakfast can be slow; aim to be on the clifftop path by 9:30 with a shell in the daypack. Walk east to Praia da Marinha and back while the air climbs toward its 62.6°F high, then take the cave by kayak or boat between noon and 2 p.m., the warmest window of the day. Lunch late in Carvoeiro, then drive out to the Alfanzina lighthouse for the 6:12 p.m. sunset. Dinner runs after dark all month.

Day two follows the sky. Clear, and it is the Algar Seco boardwalks, the cove at Praia do Carvalho, and an afternoon on the coast road toward Albufeira. Wet, and one February day in five is, so drive east to Faro for the walled old town, the cathedral and the covered market, all of them indoor hours. Keep the cave for whichever of the two mornings looks better rather than fixing it on arrival, since a canceled boat in February usually comes down to the swell.

Benagil in February vs January and March

January February March
Average high 61.3°F 62.6°F 66.0°F
Average low 46.9°F 47.8°F 51.4°F
Precipitation 1.94 in 1.65 in 1.84 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 6.0 5.4 5.6
Sea surface, mean of daily maxima 62.0°F 61.3°F 60.9°F

Across the quarter the air climbs and the water does the opposite. January averages 61.3°F by day and 46.9°F at night, with 1.94 inches of rain over 6.0 wet days. February lifts the high to 62.6°F, the low to 47.8°F, and drops the rain to 1.65 inches over 5.4 days. March jumps to 66.0°F and 51.4°F but puts 1.84 inches back across 5.6 days. The sea runs the other way on the marine series, 62.0°F, then 61.3°F, then 60.9°F.

Shifting four weeks later buys 3.4°F on the daytime high and 3.6°F on the night low, which is roughly the difference between a jacket at dinner and a sweater. It costs 0.19 inch of extra rain, two-tenths of a wet day, and 0.4°F of sea, so nobody swims in March either. Shifting four weeks earlier hands back the warmest water of the three at 62.0°F, along with 0.29 inch more rain, 0.6 of an extra wet day and the shortest days. February is the driest of the three and mid-pack on temperature.

Is February a good time to visit Benagil?

Yes, if the trip is built on walking, cliffs, photographs and long lunches, and if a car is part of the plan. February serves the Algarve’s most photographed coastline at 62.6°F, with 5.4 wet days and no summer queue at the viewpoint. No, if the point is swimming or a beach holiday with children: 61.3°F water and 47.8°F nights will not carry that trip, whatever the brochure photograph promises.

If the answer came out no, the month to wait for is not March, which adds air and subtracts water. Warm sea on this coast arrives much later in the year, and our month-by-month verdict for Portugal sets out where the swimming months begin. Booking a later trip also changes the shape of the holiday, since the same nights cost more and the cliff path gets busy.

What February gives that neither neighbor does is the driest reading of the three, 1.65 inches over 5.4 days, arriving just as the thermometer starts to climb.

The last word

Decide the cave first and build the rest around it: book the flight, book the car, book a room with real heating, and give Benagil two mornings rather than one so the sky can pick which of them goes on the water. One figure we have kept back for the end: 1.4 days in an average February record 0.39 inch of rain or more, about one day in twenty. Keep one flexible afternoon, and keep Faro’s covered market in reserve for it.
