COIMBRA · MAY · BENCANTA 1991-2020
May is when Coimbra’s weather stops hedging. The official 1991-2020 normals for the city put the average high at 73.9°F and the average low at 53.2°F, with 2.55 inches of rain spread over about eight and a half wet days. Four weeks earlier, April runs five degrees cooler by afternoon and pours a third more water on the hill.
The trade is light against certainty. On May 15 the city gets 14 hours 29 minutes of daylight and keeps the sun up until 8:44 p.m., while June, drier at 1.02 inches, pushes afternoons to 79.3°F. Underneath all of it sits the same hill, the same river, and a university that has grown above the town for more than seven centuries.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · COIMBRA · MAY
May gives Coimbra 73.9°F afternoons, fourteen and a half hours of daylight and roughly eight wet days: warm enough for the climb to the Alta, damp enough that the jacket stays in the bag.
AVG HIGH 73.9°F · AVG LOW 53.2°F · 2.55 IN OF RAIN · 8.5 WET DAYS · SUNSET 8:44 PM
Go for: long evenings on a UNESCO hill of 36.2 hectares, afternoons still under 75°F, and a rain pattern that has already shed two of April’s wet days.
Think twice before: planning an all-outdoor week, since 2.1 days in an average May bring 0.39 inch of rain or more.

Every figure here is a 1991-2020 normal from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, measured at its station inside the city. Sunrise and sunset come from sunrise-sunset.org, converted to Lisbon time. Where our sources stop we say so instead of filling the gap, and the country-wide question of when to fly sits in our 12-month verdict for Portugal.

Station 707 at Coimbra Bencanta is a real thermometer at 26.6 meters in the Mondego valley, not a model grid cell, and its May normals read 73.9°F by day, 53.2°F before dawn, 2.55 inches of rain. That is a valley reading and it does not describe the wider region: high ground runs colder and far wetter, and the coast keeps weather of its own. Pack for the ground you plan to walk on, not for the average of a map.
An average May logs 8.5 days with at least 1 mm of rain, the 0.04 inch that IPMA counts as a wet day, and 2.1 days reaching 0.39 inch or more. So: measurable rain roughly one day in three, a real soaking twice in the month, and six wet days that stay under a third of an inch. Watch the threshold, because US tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch and the two totals are not interchangeable.
Between the 53.2°F morning and the 73.9°F afternoon lies a swing of 20.7 degrees, and that single figure decides the bag. A fleece or light sweater for the first hour, a shirt by noon, a shell for the two heavy days, and nothing heavier. Cotton that stays damp from an 8 a.m. shower is still damp on a hill at 11. Our packing guide has the full layer list for a Portuguese spring.
Light is the month’s real dividend. On May 15 the sun clears the valley at 6:15 a.m. and sets at 8:44 p.m. local time, giving 14 hours 29 minutes between them, with usable light after dinner rather than before it. That pushes the whole day back: monuments in the morning, the shaded hour after lunch, and the outdoor walk at seven when the stone has stopped throwing heat.
How warm is Coimbra in May? Daytime highs and morning lows
Call it 74 by day and 53 at dawn. The 73.9°F mean high sits squarely between April’s 68.9°F and June’s 79.3°F, and the 53.2°F mean low does the same between 48.9°F and 57.6°F. Neither number is an extreme reading: they are the 30-year averages of daily maxima and minima, so individual afternoons land above and below them. The 20.7-degree daily spread is wider than the month-to-month step of about five degrees.
In clothes, that means two outfits inside one day. Anyone out at 7 a.m. for the river or the empty Alta wants sleeves and something over them, while by two in the afternoon a 74-degree climb up a hill town is warm work in direct sun. Evening settles back toward the fifties well before the 8:44 p.m. sunset, which is why the layer you resented carrying at noon goes back on at dinner.
Frost does not figure in May here, and we will not pretend to count it: our IPMA extract carries monthly means, not a tally of freezing nights, so no frost-night number appears. What the extract does support is the distance involved, since a mean low of 53.2°F sits 21 degrees above freezing.
How busy is Coimbra in May? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Coimbra, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. May is a spring month in a university city, which is a fact of the calendar rather than a price signal, and any claim that it sits at the floor or the ceiling of the year would be invention. For the national shape of the season, the 12-month verdict does that work properly.
Lead times are the same story: we could not verify a booking window for the city, so no number of weeks appears. What we can fix is geography. The inscribed core covers 36.2 hectares with a buffer zone of 80.8 hectares, and it splits into two components inside the old town, so a bed in or beside that footprint puts both of them on foot. Our Portugal lodging guide handles the choice by region.
On the municipal tourist tax, our sources carry no rate for Coimbra, so no per-night amount is quoted here. Ask at check-in and read the line on the folio rather than trusting a figure copied from another Portuguese city. General arrival admin, from card payments to what the receipt should show, sits in know before you go.
One spend genuinely changes the month, and it is the address. With light holding until 8:44 p.m., a room in the upper town turns the evening into a walk instead of a climb after dinner, and it turns the 6:15 a.m. sunrise into an empty street rather than an alarm plus a hill. Admission prices are a separate matter: we hold no ticket price for the Joanine Library or any other building, so budget those at the door.
Things to do in Coimbra in May

May buys the full outdoor day that April keeps taking back. Two fewer wet days than April, three quarters of an inch less rain, and fourteen and a half hours of light mean the walking half of Coimbra works without a contingency plan for most of the month. June is drier still, at 1.02 inches, but it adds 5.4 degrees to the afternoon, and a hill town is not improved by that.
The property that draws people here is a serial one, inscribed in 2013 and covering 36.2 hectares. The Alta holds the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, St Michael’s Chapel, the Joanine Library with its baroque decor, and the Colleges of Jesus, Holy Trinity, St Jerome, St Benedict, St Anthony of the Quarry and St Rita. Sofia Street is the other half, lined with its own colleges, among them the old Royal College of the Arts used by the Inquisition. We hold no opening hours and no admission fees for any of them, so check each before you walk up.
Indoors, the month is irrelevant: a baroque library reads the same in February. Outdoors it decides everything, and the walking is what links the two components, the 18th-century Botanical Garden, the chemistry laboratories, the University Press, the 1940s University City that belongs to the inscription too, and the 12th-century Cathedral of Santa Cruz standing among the university buildings. At 73.9°F those connections are a pleasure. At June’s 79.3°F they become the part you shorten.
Free in May is the same as free in any month, and we could not verify which buildings waive admission, so no free list appears. The street-level half costs nothing regardless: Sofia Street end to end, and the hilltop view that UNESCO calls the visibility of a citadel of learning. That setting is also the property’s named weak point, since large-scale building in the surrounding landscape has already altered its authenticity.
Coimbra in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs early and late, with the middle hollowed out. Be on the Alta by 7:30 a.m., an hour after the 6:15 sunrise, while the stone is still near the 53.2°F low and the hill is empty. Do the university buildings and the Joanine Library from opening, break between 1 and 4 p.m. when the day reaches for 74, then take Sofia Street and its colleges from five. Dinner at eight still has light on it until 8:44.
Day two goes to the Botanical Garden and the river in the morning, the 1940s University City after lunch, and Santa Cruz late. If the sky turns, and 2.1 days a month bring 0.39 inch or more, invert it: interiors from opening, the garden in the gap, and the outdoor stretch after the shower. With 8.5 wet days spread across 31, the odds favor rearranging a day rather than losing one. Getting here without a car is covered in our transport guide.
Coimbra in May vs April and June
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainfall | Days with 0.04 in or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| April | 68.9°F | 48.9°F | 3.33 in | 10.6 |
| May | 73.9°F | 53.2°F | 2.55 in | 8.5 |
| June | 79.3°F | 57.6°F | 1.02 in | 3.7 |
| Shifting four weeks | What changes |
|---|---|
| May instead of April | 5.0°F warmer by day, 4.3°F warmer at dawn, 0.78 in less rain, 2.1 fewer wet days |
| June instead of May | 5.4°F warmer by day, 1.53 in less rain, 4.8 fewer wet days |
Three months, one thermometer, a clean gradient. April gives 68.9°F and 10.6 wet days, May 73.9°F and 8.5, June 79.3°F and 3.7, with rainfall falling from 3.33 inches to 2.55 to 1.02 across the same stretch. Nights climb in step, from 48.9°F to 53.2°F to 57.6°F.
Moving from May to June trades weather risk for heat: you lose nearly five wet days and gain afternoons above 79°F on a town built vertically. Moving back to April does the reverse, handing you cooler stone and a wetter diary, with one wet day in three becoming one in two and a half. May is the version where both columns stay tolerable at once, and it is the only one of the three where that is true.
Is May a good time to visit Coimbra?
For most people, yes. Anyone whose trip is built on walking a hilltop of colleges, a botanical garden and a riverside gets 73.9°F afternoons, mornings that need one layer, and light until quarter to nine. The traveler who should hesitate is the one on a tight three-day visit with a fixed outdoor program, since 8.5 wet days means a two-in-five chance that any given day records rain.
If that risk is unacceptable, take June and accept the heat: 3.7 wet days and 1.02 inches make it the driest of the three months by a wide margin, and the extra 5.4 degrees is manageable if you move the walking to the ends of the day. April is the wrong answer to the same question, being both cooler and wetter than May on every line of the table.
What no other month pairs is fourteen and a half hours of daylight with afternoons still under 75°F, which is the exact combination a vertical old town rewards.
The last word
Book the bed in the upper town and let May do the rest: the month hands you a 6:15 a.m. start and an 8:44 p.m. finish, and the walk between the two UNESCO components is the part the weather actually touches. One thing to know before you climb, since it shapes what you are looking at: the inscription was written in 2013 under criteria two, four and six, then amended by a minor boundary change in 2019, and Coimbra’s institutional and architectural model went on to shape universities across the Lusophone world.
