FARO, PORTUGAL · AUGUST · THE ALGARVE COAST
Faro sits on the eastern Algarve coast, and August here runs on two numbers that pull in opposite directions: 84.6°F in the afternoon air and 66.8°F in the sea. The first is what most visitors fly for. The second catches out Americans who assume an Atlantic in August behaves like the Gulf of Mexico.
The rest of the month is light and dryness. The 1991-2020 normals give the city 0.12 inch of rain for all of August, and August 15 carries 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight, with the sun down at 8:24 p.m. local. Outdoor plans hold. What rearranges a day is the afternoon heat and the company that Europe’s school calendar delivers to the whole coast at once.

FARO IN AUGUST · AT A GLANCE
August gives Faro 84.6°F days, almost no rain in the official normals and a sea averaging 66.8°F, so it is a bright, hot, busy month with cooler water than most American swimmers expect.

August is also the month when the calendar does more than the weather: European schools are out, and Faro is the airport the whole coast flies into. For the towns and beaches beyond the city, our Algarve guide covers the region, and the best-time page ranks all twelve months of the country.
Faro weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| August at Faro (IPMA, 1991-2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 84.6°F |
| Average low | 67.8°F |
| Precipitation, month total | 0.12 in |
| Days at 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 0.2 |
| Days at 10 mm (0.39 in) or more | 0.1 |
| Sea surface (2015-2024, daily maxima) | 66.8°F |
| Daylight, August 15 | 13 h 37 min |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute, and specifically from station 554 in Faro: a real thermometer 5 meters above sea level, not a model grid cell. Its 1991-2020 normals put August at an average high of 84.6°F, an average low of 67.8°F and 0.12 inch of precipitation for the whole month. Those readings describe the coast at Faro and nowhere else. High ground inland is colder and far wetter, and the western end of the Algarve keeps its own weather, so do not pack for a hill trail on a sea-level reading.
Rain in August is close to theoretical. IPMA counts 0.2 days in an average August reaching 1 mm, which is 0.04 inch, so roughly four Augusts in five record no such day at all. Watch the threshold: American tables usually count days at 0.10 inch, and the two sets of counts are not interchangeable. In a practical day it means a beach plan made a week ahead survives, and a sunshade earns its place in the car before a rain jacket does.
The day-to-night spread is 16.8°F, from a 67.8°F low before dawn to an 84.6°F afternoon. Those are warm nights by American standards, so the sweater stays home. What does need bag space is a hat, a light long-sleeved layer for the boat, and shoes you can walk cobbles in at noon. Our packing guide has the full list for Portugal.
On August 15 the sun rises at 6:47 a.m. and sets at 8:24 p.m. local time, which works out to 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight. The evening is the part that matters: light is still usable past eight, dinner runs late, and the two hottest hours of the afternoon can be handed over to a nap or a boat deck without costing you the day.
Can you swim in Faro in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Faro averages 66.8°F in August across the 2015-2024 Open-Meteo Marine record. That number is a mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a full 24-hour average would give. Read it as upper-60s water at the warmest stretch of the afternoon, and a little cooler at first light.
For a swimmer used to Florida, 66.8°F is a wade-in-slowly figure, nearer a New England August than the Gulf. Adults acclimate in a minute or two and children usually last less. Nobody needs a wetsuit, and with 84.6°F air waiting on the sand most people swim, dry off and go back in. If warm water is the reason for the trip, this is the honest sticking point of the month.
We could not verify a monthly wind or wave series for Faro, so no figure appears for either. We can say where our number stops: it measures the open sea surface off the city. Shallow water over a lagoon sandbar on an outgoing tide behaves differently from open water, and we have no measurement for it.
How busy is Faro in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
August falls in the middle of Europe’s summer holiday block, and Faro competes for beds with every resort town on the coast it serves by air. On the money question we stop short of a verdict: we found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Faro, so we crown no month the year’s most expensive and quote no nightly rate.
What that leaves is timing. Book the fixed pieces early, the rental car first, because a coastal August empties the depots before it empties the hotels. Our rule of thumb, not a measured figure: eight to twelve weeks out (est.) for the car and the room together if you want a particular neighborhood. The car guide covers tolls and insurance, and the flights guide covers the routings from the US.
On lodging tax, we give no number. We could not verify a current municipal tourist tax for Faro, and a per-night figure invented to fill the line would be worse than the blank. Budget tiers for the country sit in our Portugal trip cost guide.
If one line of the budget deserves more money this month, make it the boat rather than the bed. The lagoon islands are the reason to be in Faro when the shore is at 84.6°F, and the crossings fill in high summer. We quote no fare because we could not verify current operator prices.
Things to do in Faro in August

What August hands you that September does not is a dry run of days. The normals give 0.12 inch of rain across the month against 0.85 inch in September, and 0.2 rain days against 1.9. A ferry booked three days ahead is very unlikely to be rained out, and the evening stays usable right up to that 8:24 p.m. sunset on the 15th.
The named stops are close together. Faro sits behind the Ria Formosa lagoon and its natural park, with boat crossings from the waterfront out to Ilha Deserta and Ilha do Farol. Praia de Faro lies on the sand spit, reached by road from the airport side. Inside the walls, the Cidade Velha is entered under the Arco da Vila and holds the Sé, the Museu Municipal in a former convent, and the bone chapel at Igreja do Carmo. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of them, so we quote none. Check each before you walk over.
Between August and September the sea gives up only 1.4°F, from 66.8 to 65.4, while the afternoon air drops 5.1°F, from 84.6 to 79.5. The month moves the air far more than the water. That is exactly why the lagoon crossings and the shaded lanes inside the walls carry more weight in August than they do four weeks later, when the shore itself is comfortable.
Free in August, as in any month: the old town inside the walls, the marina front, and the sand at Praia de Faro. Assume you will pay museum admission at the desk.
Faro in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one opens with a 6:47 a.m. sunrise. Be in the Cidade Velha by eight, while the lanes between the Arco da Vila and the Sé still hold shade. Take a late-morning boat into the Ria Formosa and give the hottest hours to the water and an island beach, where 66.8°F is an asset. Come back into town in the six o’clock light, then let the 8:24 p.m. sunset set the dinner hour.
Day two runs east by regional train to Tavira and back for the evening, or out to Praia de Faro if the beach won the vote. The weather rarely turns wet in this month, so the day that goes wrong goes hot instead: when three o’clock is sitting near the 84.6°F normal, move indoors to the Museu Municipal or onto a deck, and push the walking back past six.
Faro in August vs July and September
| Measure (IPMA 1991-2020, sea 2015-2024) | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.9°F | 84.6°F | 79.5°F |
| Average low | 67.3°F | 67.8°F | 64.9°F |
| Precipitation | 0.04 in | 0.12 in | 0.85 in |
| Days at 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 0.2 | 0.2 | 1.9 |
| Sea surface | 66.8°F | 66.8°F | 65.4°F |
July and August are near twins at this station. July averages 0.3°F warmer by day, 84.9 against 84.6, and August runs 0.5°F warmer at night, 67.8 against 67.3. The sea reads 66.8°F in both. September is where the figures move: 79.5°F afternoons, a 65.4°F sea, 0.85 inch of rain and 1.9 days at 1 mm or more against August’s 0.2. The July page carries that month in full.
Shift four weeks later and you trade 5.1°F of afternoon heat for 0.73 inch more rain and 1.7 extra rain days, while losing just 1.4°F of sea warmth. Shift four weeks earlier into July and the water gains you nothing at all, since both months read the same, and the holiday crowds are already in place.
Is August a good time to visit Faro?
Yes for anyone tied to school holidays, and yes for a traveler who wants dry weather they can plan around weeks in advance. No for the swimmer expecting bathwater: 66.8°F is a real measurement and nothing in our sources shows it climbing later in the month. No, too, for anyone who pictured the old town to themselves at noon.
If that second reader is you, September is the swap, and in weather terms it costs little. Afternoons at 79.5°F are still warm, the sea slips only to 65.4°F, and the bill comes as 0.85 inch of rain spread over 1.9 days. For the full year at country scale, our month-by-month verdict runs all twelve.
What August offers that neither neighbor matches is a long day with almost nothing working against it: 13 hours 37 minutes of light on the 15th, and 0.12 inch of rain for the entire month.
The last word
Judge this month by the water before the air. If a 66.8°F Atlantic suits you, August at Faro is bright, dry and crowded, and the car should be booked before the room. One figure we held back: a genuine soaking, 0.39 inch inside a single day, appears in the normals at 0.1 day per August, roughly one August in ten. Pack for heat and light, and leave the rain gear at home.
