Albufeira in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and How April and June Compare

May hands Albufeira the last warm month you can walk through at noon: a 74.3°F average high, a 59.0°F average low, 1.03 inches of rain spread over 3.8 wet days, and daylight running past eight in the evening. The cliffs, the coast path and the long sandy stretches are all in play from breakfast to dinner.

What May withholds is the water. The sea off the town averages 63.4°F, roughly where it sat in April, and it does not move until June’s 66.9°F. So the month splits travelers cleanly: brilliant for a walking-and-sand week with a car, frustrating for anyone whose vacation is measured in hours spent swimming.

May gives Albufeira 74.3°F afternoons, 3.8 wet days and more than 14 hours of light, while holding the sea at 63.4°F: a walking-and-sand month more than a swimming one.

The air figures come from a real thermometer, not a model grid cell: IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, runs station 554 at Faro, 5.0 meters above sea level, and its 1991-2020 normals give May a 74.3°F average high, a 59.0°F average low and 1.03 inches of rain. Faro sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, so treat these as coastal numbers for a coastal town. Carry them inland or uphill and they stop working, because high ground in the Algarve runs colder and considerably wetter.

Measurable rain falls on 3.8 days in an average May, about one day in eight, and IPMA counts a day as wet from 0.04 inch up. US tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain-day figures are not interchangeable. How those days are distributed through the month, and through the hours, we could not verify: no hourly series was available to us. Book four outdoor days out of five and keep one indoor swap in reserve.

Between afternoon and dawn the thermometer travels 15.3°F, from 74.3 down to 59.0. That is a T-shirt at three o’clock and a sweater at ten, and it catches out people who packed for a beach month and nothing else. A light fleece, long pants for dinner and one rain layer cover it. The rest of the suitcase is handled in our Portugal packing guide.

On May 15 the sun rises at 6:21 AM and sets at 8:34 PM local time, Portugal running an hour ahead of UTC through the spring, for 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight. A nine o’clock start on the cliffs still feels cool, and dinner begins in full light. It also means you can sit down to eat at eight and walk the seafront back before dark.

Can you swim in Albufeira in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Albufeira averages 63.4°F in May. That comes from the Open-Meteo Marine API, averaged over 2015-2024, and it is a mean of daily maxima, so it reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. It is also a different source and a different period from the IPMA air normals, and the two are not one dataset.

For an American used to Gulf or Caribbean water, 63.4°F is a shock rather than a swim. Most adults go in quickly, do a short set and come back out to the 74.3°F air. Children last longer, as ever. For a surf lesson or anything that keeps you floating rather than moving, the wetsuit the school hands over is doing real work, not selling an image.

We could not verify a wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we give no swell figures and no afternoon-breeze average, and boat operators will cancel on conditions we have not measured. What we can date is the water itself: the same marine series puts April at 63.5°F and May at 63.4°F, so moving a trip four weeks earlier inside spring buys nothing at all in the sea. June is where it finally moves, at 66.9°F.

How busy is Albufeira in May? Crowds and how far ahead to book

We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. The calendar can be dated, though: May falls before the July and August peak the Algarve is built around, before most European school holidays, and clear of Western Easter, which never lands later than April 25. Country-level spending figures sit in our Portugal trip cost guide.

Booking behavior we could not measure either, so take the next number as our own rule of thumb rather than a series: for a beachfront apartment or a family-size place with a pool, six to eight weeks (est.) is where the choice starts thinning in a shoulder month. The rental car matters more than the room in this part of Portugal and should be locked first, toll transponder included, as the car rental guide explains. Routing from the US through Lisbon or Faro is a flights question.

Portuguese municipalities are allowed to charge a per-night tourist tax. Whether Albufeira levies one for 2026, at what rate and in which months, we could not verify, so no percentage appears anywhere here. Ask the property to state the amount in writing before you pay, and ask whether it sits inside the booking total or is collected on arrival. The rest of the administrative side is in what to know before you go.

One upgrade the May figures argue for is a heated pool. With the sea at 63.4°F and the air at 74.3°F, a heated pool is what keeps swimming in the day at all, and it changes the shape of a family week far more than a sea view does. Which part of town that pool sits in is a separate decision, taken in our where-to-stay guide.

Things to do in Albufeira in May

Walking is what May unlocks. At a 74.3°F average high the cliff path is comfortable at midday, which it stops being once June brings 80.2°F, and 3.8 wet days leave most of the month dry underfoot. April offers similar walking weather 5.0°F cooler, but pays for it with 5.3 wet days and half an inch more rain.

In town, Praia dos Pescadores is the beach directly below the old quarter, and Praia da Falésia runs east under the cliffs toward Olhos de Água. From the marina, boats head west for the sea caves, Benagil first among them, with Ponta da Piedade off Lagos as the other headline stop and Carvoeiro in between. Ask at the marina kiosks the day before you want to sail for current fares and departure times.

The water at those beaches barely notices the month. Our marine reading for Albufeira is 63.4°F in May against 66.9°F in June, a difference of 3.5°F. The air does the moving, and the gap between sea and afternoon air in May is 10.9°F. That gap is the shape of a May beach day: long on the sand, short in the water, and easy on anyone who burns.

The free half of May is the walking and the sand: the beaches, the cliff paths between town and Olhos de Água, the old-town squares, and light until 8:34 PM on the 15th. We could not verify any May festival or market dates for Albufeira, so we name none. For ticketed sights further along the coast and inland, start with the Algarve guide.

Albufeira in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one takes the cool end first. Breakfast at eight, on the coast path by nine while the air is still nearer 59.0°F than 74.3°F, walking east toward Olhos de Água. Down to the sand by eleven, into the 63.4°F water fast and out again, lunch in the old town at half past one when the sun is highest. Keep two to four for something seated. Out again at six for the marina, dinner at eight, and the light holds to 8:34 PM.

Day two goes on the water: a morning boat from the marina toward the caves if the swell allows, then Praia da Falésia for the afternoon. If one of the month’s 3.8 wet days lands on you, trade the boat for the drive east, since Faro‘s old town and Tavira‘s riverfront both hold up under cloud, and keep the boat for the next clear morning rather than sailing into a gray one.

Albufeira in May vs April and June

Average low 54.3°F 59.0°F 64.0°F
Rain in the month 1.54 in 1.03 in 0.20 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.3 3.8 0.8
Sea surface (daily maxima) 63.5°F 63.4°F 66.9°F

Across the three months the Faro normals climb while the rain falls away. May’s 74.3°F average high sits 5.0°F above April and 5.9°F below June. Rain drops from 1.54 inches to 1.03 to 0.20, and wet days from 5.3 to 3.8 to 0.8. The sea is the outlier in that run: 63.5°F in April and 63.4°F in May on the marine series, then a 3.5°F jump to 66.9°F in June.

Move four weeks earlier and you lose 5.0°F of afternoon warmth, add a day and a half of rain, and gain nothing whatsoever in the water, since April reads a tenth of a degree off May. Move four weeks later and you buy the actual swim at 66.9°F plus a near-dry month, at the cost of midday walking comfort and of whatever quiet May holds. All twelve months sit side by side in the best time to visit Portugal.

Is May a good time to visit Albufeira?

Yes for walkers, drivers and anyone whose beach day happens mainly on the sand. A 74.3°F afternoon, 3.8 wet days and 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight make for a long, mild, mobile week with a car. No if swimming is the reason for the trip, because 63.4°F water, even counted as a daily maximum, is not what most people picture when they book the Algarve.

For swimmers the month to move to is June rather than July: 66.9°F in the sea, 0.8 wet days, and an 80.2°F average high that still walks well early and late, at the cost of sharing the coast with the start of high season. Going the other way makes no sense for them, as April reads the same 63.5°F in the water and adds half an inch of rain on top.

What May alone pairs is long light with mild afternoons: 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight by mid-month and a thermometer that stays under 75°F, where June brings the light and 80.2°F with it, and April holds 69.3°F but pays 5.3 wet days for the privilege.

The last word

Decide this one on the water, not the weather. If everyone in the party will get into 63.4°F sea, May is the better version of June: cooler on the cliff path, drier than April, and lit until half past eight. If they will not, move the week to June and accept the company. One figure we held back: IPMA logs 0.7 days in an average May at 0.39 inch or more, so heavy rain here is an occasional single day rather than a pattern, and one reserve plan, Faro’s old town for instance, covers it.
