CASCAIS · OCTOBER · 38.7° N
October in Cascais averages a 72.7°F afternoon and a 58.8°F night, with 11 hours 14 minutes of daylight on the 15th. That is shirt-sleeve weather with a wind layer in the bag, on a coast that runs cooler and breezier than the inland thermometer these figures come from.
What the month takes away is dry ground. Rain totals 4.05 inches against September’s 1.41, and 8.3 days record measurable rain instead of 3.7. Nothing in those counts ruins a week, but a two-day plan built on two clear days is a plan with no spare afternoon in it.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · CASCAIS · OCTOBER
October hands Cascais 72.7°F afternoons, 11 hours 14 minutes of daylight on the 15th and 8.3 wet days: a month for the natural park and the coast road, with a jacket in the bag.

Go for: the 14,583-hectare Sintra-Cascais Natural Park at a walkable 72.7°F, the Guincho and Oitavos dunes, and the coastal lapies north of Cabo Raso.
Think twice before: booking October as a beach week: 8.3 days record measurable rain, and we could not verify a sea-temperature series for Cascais.

The normals below are thirty-year averages, not a forecast for your week, and they are read at an inland airport station. Cascais sits on the open Atlantic and runs cooler and windier than that, while the serra behind the town is colder and far wetter again. For the place rather than the date, our Cascais guide is the starting point, and the twelve-month view is in when to visit Portugal.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer. IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, publishes 1991-2020 normals for station 579, Lisboa Gago Coutinho, and its October column reads 72.7°F for the average high, 58.8°F for the average low and 4.05 inches of rain. That is a real instrument at 103.9 m of altitude, not a model grid cell over the water, and it stands inland at the airport rather than on the Cascais seafront.
Measurable rain falls on 8.3 October days, roughly one day in four, counted at IPMA’s 0.04-inch threshold rather than the 0.10 inch American tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable. Only 2.8 days reach 0.39 inch or more, the difference between a shower that passes over lunch and an afternoon that stays indoors. Over a seven-night stay, expect about two wet days, and plan the museums and the market for them.
Afternoon and night are 13.9 degrees apart, small enough to pack one bag and wide enough to feel at dinner. A wind shell does more than a heavy coat on this coast, because the Atlantic breeze, not the thermometer, is what sharpens a 58.8°F evening. Our packing guide has the rest of the autumn list.
On October 15 the sun rises at 7:45 a.m. and sets at 6:59 p.m. local time, 11 hours 14 minutes of daylight (06:45 and 17:59 UTC at the source, with Portugal an hour ahead of UTC in mid-October). That leaves room for a slow beach morning and a clifftop late afternoon before dinner starts in the dark.
How warm is Cascais in October?
The two headline numbers are 72.7°F by day and 58.8°F by night. A monthly mean hides a slide, though: September averages 80.2°F in the afternoon and November 63.7°F, so the last week of October behaves more like November than like the figure at the top of the month. Book the first half if a warm afternoon matters to the trip.
In practice one mid-layer covers the whole day. Mornings at 58.8°F want long sleeves and something windproof on the seafront, afternoons in shelter are short-sleeve weather, and the exposed dunes west of town stay several notches breezier than the town squares. Sunglasses earn more use than an umbrella on 23 days out of 31.
Frost is not part of this month: the average low sits nearly 27 degrees above freezing, and we could not verify a count of frost nights for station 579. As for the water, we found no sea-temperature series we can stand behind for Cascais, so we publish no number. Where such figures are published elsewhere, they are usually averages of daily maxima, warmer than a 24-hour mean, and they should not be set beside air normals as if both were measured the same way.
How busy is Cascais in October? Crowds, booking and the tourist tax
October falls on the far side of the European school holidays that fill this coast in summer, which puts it in the shoulder by the calendar. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Cascais, so we crown no month cheapest and no month dearest. For the shape of a Portuguese budget across the year, our cost guide does that work with the data it has.
Lead times we could not verify either, so take the next line as our practice rather than a measurement: ticket the flight first, then the room, then the car, and treat the last ten days of October as a different month from the first ten. Flights into Lisbon airport put you 30 minutes of highway from the seafront, and the US routes are worth checking before the room is locked.
We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for Cascais, so no per-night figure comes from us. The town hall publishes an events agenda rather than the numbers we went looking for, which is also why no October festival appears above: we have no dated event we can vouch for. Ask the property what it adds at checkout and hold a few euros a night aside for it.
One line of the budget genuinely changes what October gives you, and it is the car. The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park runs to 14,583 hectares across two municipalities, and the month’s best hours are scattered over it: the lapies north of Cabo Raso, the Guincho and Oitavos dunes, the serra road climbing behind the coast. Tolls, deposits and the fuel policy are covered in our rental guide.
Things to do in Cascais in October: the natural park, Guincho and Cabo Raso

The serra is what this date unlocks. At an average high of 72.7°F, 7.5 degrees under September, the climb to Pedra Amarela at 406 m (1,332 ft) is a morning’s walk rather than an ordeal, and the same air makes a midday hour on the dune tracks pleasant instead of punishing. Summer gives you the swim, October gives you the altitude.
The park itself covers 14,583 hectares across the Sintra and Cascais municipalities, protected as a landscape by Decree-Law 292/81 of 15 October 1981 and reclassified a natural park by Regulatory Decree 8/94 on 11 March 1994. Inside it sit the coastal lapies, a karst relief running north of Cabo Raso, the Guincho-Oitavos dune system, and remnant oak forest clinging to the least accessible corners with threatened species such as holly. Two raptors nest here, the peregrine falcon and Bonelli’s eagle.
Rock and sand hold still from month to month. The air does not: 72.7°F over those dunes in October, 80.2°F in September, 63.7°F in November. Rain shifts the footing as well, with 8.3 wet days against September’s 3.7, so the karst north of Cabo Raso is slick more often, and the serra collects more water than the coastal station ever records.
Since no ticket price and no opening hour for a Cascais site could be read at our sources, assume the coast is the dependable free half of the month: the dunes at Guincho and Oitavos, the lapies above Cabo Raso, and open ground across the park with no gate we could confirm. Bring binoculars. Watching for the two nesting raptors the park service names costs nothing at all.
Cascais in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Be out by 8:30, when the 58.8°F night is still hanging on the seafront and the marina is at its quietest, and keep the morning in town. Give the middle of the day to the Guincho and Oitavos dunes, when the 72.7°F sits highest. Around 4 p.m. drive north to the coastal lapies at Cabo Raso with enough sun left to read the karst, and let the 6:59 p.m. sunset set the dinner hour.
Day two climbs. The serra road, the walk up Pedra Amarela at 406 m and a swing through the Colares vineyards on the way down fill 11 hours of daylight with room to spare. If the sky turns, and one October day in four brings measurable rain, move indoors instead: the train to Lisbon turns a wet morning into museums, and Sintra puts its palaces under a roof 30 minutes up the hill.
Cascais in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.2°F | 72.7°F | 63.7°F |
| Average low | 63.3°F | 58.8°F | 52.2°F |
| Precipitation | 1.41 in | 4.05 in | 4.51 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 3.7 | 8.3 | 9.3 |
| Sea temperature | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified |
September runs 80.2°F by day on 1.41 inches of rain across 3.7 wet days. October drops the afternoon 7.5 degrees to 72.7°F and more than doubles the wet days to 8.3, with 4.05 inches in the gauge. November takes another 9 degrees off the high, at 63.7°F, and adds only 0.46 inch more rain over 9.3 days. The nights step down the same way: 63.3°F, then 58.8°F, then 52.2°F. No sea-temperature series could be verified for any of the three.
Shifting four weeks earlier buys warmth and dryness and costs you the quiet, as September in Cascais lays out. Shifting four weeks later costs 9 degrees of afternoon and one more wet day per ten, for a coast at its emptiest and its wildest, which is the case November makes. October sits between them at almost exactly the midpoint of both curves.
Is October a good time to visit Cascais?
Yes for walkers, drivers, birdwatchers and anyone who wants the Atlantic coast without August company. No for a sunbathing week: 8.3 wet days, a 72.7°F high and a sea temperature we cannot quote add up to a poor brief for seven days on a towel. Families tied to school dates will also find the light short by the last week.
If the answer came out no, move to September rather than November. Of the three months, September is the warmest by day at 80.2°F and the driest by a distance, 1.41 inches over 3.7 wet days, and it keeps nights at 63.3°F for late dinners outside. The trade is company on the sand and rooms booked further ahead.
What October alone offers is a serra you can climb in comfort, 406 m of it at Pedra Amarela, above a coast that has not yet reached November’s 9.3 wet days.
The last word
One decision carries this month: rent the car, because the 14,583 hectares October makes walkable do not come with a bus stop at the good end. Leave one afternoon unassigned for the day the rain lands, and spend part of it in Colares, which keeps an international name for its wine and grows fruit varieties of its own, the Colares reinette apple, the rose peach, the thick-skinned lemon and the pearl pear. Ask for them by name.
