Funchal is a city stacked on a slope, and the ride up it is what most visitors book first. The Teleférico do Funchal lifts you from the seafront to the village of Monte for €22 return or €16 one way, running 08:45 to 17:45 every day of the year except Christmas Day. At the top station, Caminho das Babosas, two of the city’s set pieces sit within a few steps of the cabin doors: the Monte Palace Tropical Garden on one side, the wicker sledges of the carreiros on the other.
Funchal’s cruise season is winter, not summer, and that single fact reorders a stay. The port authority counted 113,839 passengers in February against 4,071 in July, roughly twenty-five arrivals in February for every one in July, with 44 ship calls against 3. The cable car queue and the market aisles follow that curve. The city tax does not: €2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, in any month. You need no car for the center, where Avenida Arriaga and the covered market sit inside the old grid, and the climbing is done by cable.

Think twice before: planning the wicker sledges on a Sunday or a wet day. They run Monday to Saturday only, cannot be booked, and no three-person ride goes out in rain or on wet ground.

Two municipal markets split the week between them. The Mercado dos Lavradores, the covered market in the old town, opens 07:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 07:00 to 14:00 on Saturday, and it is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Saturday morning is its busiest and best hour, Saturday afternoon a locked door. For a Sunday, head instead to the Mercado da Penteada, open 07:00 to 13:00 on Sundays and public holidays, and later in the week to 20:00 Monday to Thursday and 21:00 on Friday.
What is there to do in Funchal?
The carros de cesto, the wicker sledges pushed down from Monte by two carreiros in white, cost €30 for one person, €40 for two and €60 for three. They run Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, which means no rides at all on a Sunday. They also cannot be booked: tickets are sold on site, for the same day only, the office can close early when the queue is long or the weather turns, and no three-person ride goes out in rain or on wet ground. Treat it as a plan for a dry weekday morning, not a reservation.
At the top station on Caminho das Babosas, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden asks €18 for adults, with children up to 14 free alongside an adult and school groups free, for 70,000 square meters (roughly 17 acres) of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum. Across town on Caminho do Meio at Bom Sucesso, the Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira holds more than 2,000 exotic species. April’s 88,918 passengers fall to 19,434 in May, a drop of about 78 percent in a single month, and the calls fall with them: 44 in April against 3 in July and 3 in August. A winter morning can put four ships alongside at once in Funchal. A July morning often puts none, and the old town belongs to the people who live in it.
Those figures come off the port authority’s published charts, which plot 2025 and 2026 side by side, and we quote the higher, more recent series. The bars carry no individual labels, so the May to August call counts and the August passenger total could not be read with confidence and are given as unreadable rather than guessed. The seasonal shape, winter many times summer, is identical in both years and is the part to rely on.
Use the first departure on a call day: the cable car’s first car leaves at 08:45, ahead of most ship groups heading up to Monte. A Sunday call works differently, because the sledges do not run on Sundays, so the morning ends at a garden gate rather than on wicker runners. On any other day the sledge office can shut early once the queue is long, and the queue is longest on the winter mornings with four ships in.
What does a hotel night cost in Funchal?
Whatever your room costs, the city adds a Taxa Municipal Turística of €2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so €14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and it starts again after an interrupted stay. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira on proof of tax address. Only 19,434 cruise passengers came ashore in May and 4,071 in July, against 113,210 in January: summer is Funchal’s quiet season at street level. In winter the trade flips, with more ships alongside, fuller streets and the gardens on their shorter hours. Rain and temperature are the other half of the decision, month by month, and those figures live in our Madeira calendar rather than here.
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden keeps two timetables, and they matter more than the weather forecast. From April to September it runs 09:00 to 19:00; from October to March it shuts an hour earlier, at 18:00. The museum inside closes at 17:00 all year, with last entry at the same hour, so an afternoon cable car ride can reach the garden and miss the collection. December 25 closes the garden, and it is the one day the cable car stands still too.
A wet day takes the sledges off the table before you reach Monte: no three-person ride runs in rain or on wet ground, the office can close early when the weather turns, and Sunday is closed outright. For that morning, Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga has English departures Monday to Friday at 10:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00, with extra Sunday slots, and the tasting of three Madeira wines at the end. The lodge advises booking ahead and cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Buy the cable car e-ticket before you fly: it stays valid for 60 days after purchase, children up to 6 ride free, and ages 7 to 14 pay half. Then work around the two doors that shut on a Sunday, the covered market at Lavradores and the sledge run at Monte, and let the Penteada market cover the gap.
