FUNCHAL · APRIL · 32.6° N
April hands Funchal a long, mild day and takes back most of what winter dropped on it. The city’s own station measures 1.78 inches of rain for the whole month against 2.45 inches in March, the average high sits at 69.8°F (21.0°C), and on April 15 the sun is up for 13 hours and 3 minutes. Gardens are at full throttle, the terraces stay usable after dark, and nothing about the month asks you to plan around heat.
What April does not give you is an empty waterfront. Funchal’s cruise calendar runs backward from what most visitors assume: the port authority counted 88,918 cruise passengers in April and 44 ship calls, then 19,434 passengers in May. April is the last full month of the big-ship winter, and the sea, at 68.0°F, is still cooler than the air above it.

FUNCHAL IN APRIL · 32.6° N
April gives Funchal 69.8°F days, a third less rain than March and 13 hours of light, with a 68.0°F sea and the winter cruise season still tied up alongside.
HIGH 69.8°F · SEA 68.0°F · 4.7 WET DAYS · TOURIST TAX EUR 2 PER PERSON PER NIGHT
Go for: garden weather at 69.8°F, the Monte Palace garden on its longer April-to-September hours, market mornings at Lavradores from 07:00, and dinner that still starts in daylight.
Think twice before: counting on the Monte wicker sledges. They take no reservations at all, stay shut on Sundays, and no three-person ride runs in rain or on wet ground.

Every figure here is read at Funchal’s own coastal station, 58 meters above sea level, or off the sea directly in front of the city. The island above town keeps its own weather, colder and far wetter as the ground rises, so a coastal reading is the wrong thing to pack for a mountain trail. For everything beyond the city limits, our Madeira guide is the place to start.
Funchal weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | April | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 69.8°F (21.0°C) | IPMA, station 522, 1991–2020 |
| Average low | 58.8°F (14.9°C) | IPMA, station 522, 1991–2020 |
| Monthly rain | 1.78 in | IPMA, station 522, 1991–2020 |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 4.7 | IPMA thresholds (1 mm) |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 1.2 | IPMA thresholds (10 mm) |
| Daylight on April 15 | 13 h 03 min | Sunrise and sunset calculation |
| Sea surface | 68.0°F (20.0°C) | Open-Meteo Marine, 2015–2024 daily maxima |
The air numbers come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and specifically its 1991–2020 normals for station 522, a working thermometer inside the city at 58 meters. That matters because a station reading and a model grid cell are not the same animal. April averages a high of 69.8°F, a low of 58.8°F and 1.78 inches of rain, and the rain total is already down a quarter from the 2.45 inches March delivers.
In an average April, 4.7 days record at least 0.04 inch, which works out to roughly one day in six carrying something measurable. Only 1.2 of them reach 0.39 inch or more, so the typical wet April day in Funchal is a gray morning with drizzle on the cobbles rather than a washout. One caution: those are IPMA’s thresholds, not the 0.10-inch cut used in American tables, and the two counts cannot be swapped.
Eleven degrees separate the 69.8°F afternoon from the 58.8°F night, and that gap does the packing. Shirtsleeves hold from late morning until the light goes, then a sweater earns its place on a terrace by the water. Anyone heading uphill needs more than the city reading suggests, since the interior runs colder and wetter with altitude. Our packing guide works through the layers in detail.
Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On April 15 the sun clears the horizon around 07:36 and sets at about 20:38 in Madeira’s own clock, giving 13 hours and 3 minutes between them. The cable car stops running at 17:45, so close to three hours of usable daylight remain after the last cabin. That is enough for a slow walk along the seafront and dinner before dark.
Can you swim in Funchal in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Funchal averages 68.0°F (20.0°C) in April, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine API as the mean of daily maxima across 2015 to 2024. That construction is worth knowing: a mean of daily peaks sits a shade above a true 24-hour average, so an early swim will read a touch cooler than 68.0°F and a late-afternoon one a touch warmer. Other tables built on 24-hour means will therefore publish a slightly lower number for the same month.
In practice 68.0°F is a brisk entry that turns pleasant once you swim, and the useful comparison is with the air. The April high of 69.8°F sits only 1.8 degrees above the water, so stepping out is not the shock it is in high summer, and a towel and a sweater cover the recovery. Set against the neighbors, the water is 1.1 degrees warmer than March and 1.9 cooler than May.
On wind and waves we have to stop short. We could not verify an April wind or swell series for Funchal, so we give no wave height and no windiest-month claim, and the 68.0°F figure is a ten-year monthly average rather than a forecast for the week you travel. Check the marine bulletin the day before if you plan to be in the water rather than beside it.
How busy is Funchal in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Funchal fills up in winter, not summer, and April is the tail end of that season. APRAM, the regional port authority, logged 88,918 cruise passengers and 44 ship calls in April, against 113,839 passengers in February, 19,434 in May and 4,071 in July. Those counts are read from the authority’s published charts, which plot two years side by side. We quote the higher, more recent series, and the seasonal shape is identical in both.
So book the fixed things and stay loose about the rest. A cable car e-ticket stays valid for 60 days after purchase. That makes it a sensible buy before you fly. Blandy’s Wine Lodge advises reserving its tours and allows free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. The Monte sledges cannot be reserved at all. On rooms we found no occupancy series and no monthly rate series for Funchal, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive.
The city’s own charge is published and small. Funchal levies a Taxa Municipal Turistica of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and the count restarts after an interrupted stay. Children of 12 and under go free on production of an ID, as do guests with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the Autonomous Region on proof of tax address.
One line on the bill genuinely changes an April day: how you come down from Monte. A one-way cabin at EUR 16 plus a two-person sledge at EUR 40 is a EUR 56 descent for a pair, and it collapses the moment rain wets the track. A EUR 22 return ticket costs six euros more than the one-way and keeps working on all 4.7 of the month’s wet days, which is the cheapest insurance in town.
Things to do in Funchal in April: Monte, Blandy’s and the Mercado dos Lavradores

April is the month the hillside switches to summer hours. Monte Palace Tropical Garden runs 09:00 to 19:00 from April through September and closes an hour earlier, at 18:00, from October to March, so a spring visit buys a full extra hour among the tree ferns. The sculpture museum inside shuts at 17:00 all year with last entry at 17:00, and the cable car’s final run at 17:45 is the real ceiling on a late afternoon up there.
The named stops, with what each costs. Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Caminho das Babosas at the upper cable car station, covers 70,000 square meters of exotic planting, tile panels and that sculpture collection, at EUR 18 for adults and free for children up to 14 with an adult. Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs its 45-minute Premium Tour at EUR 23, ending in three Madeira wines. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira, on Caminho do Meio at Bom Sucesso, holds more than 2,000 species.
April changes the air around those places, not the places themselves. Two of the three are open-air, so the 11-degree day-night spread and the month’s 4.7 wet days decide how long you linger, while Blandy’s tasting room and the covered Mercado dos Lavradores (07:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 14:00 Saturday) carry a gray morning without complaint. Note the trap in that market schedule: Saturday morning is its best hour of the week and Saturday afternoon is a locked door.
Free in April, for the right traveler: entry to Monte Palace for every child up to 14 accompanied by an adult, and for school groups. The cable car carries children up to 6 free and charges half fare from 7 to 14, and the tourist tax skips under-13s entirely. A Sunday morning costs nothing either, because Mercado da Penteada opens 07:00 to 13:00 on Sundays and public holidays. We verified no April festival or event dates for the city, so we name none.
Funchal in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at Lavradores when the doors open at 07:00, cool and unhurried, then walks to the cable car for the 08:45 first cabin. Monte Palace opens at 09:00, and two hours in 70,000 square meters is the honest minimum, with the museum wing done before its 17:00 cutoff. Come down by sledge between 09:00 and 18:00 Monday to Saturday if the ground is dry, and keep the seafront for the long evening that lasts until about 20:38.
Day two takes Blandy’s on Avenida Arriaga at the 10:30 English departure, 45 minutes and three wines, then the Botanical Garden at Bom Sucesso for the afternoon. If the weather turns, the sledge office can close early and no three-person ride runs on a wet track, so swap the descent for the EUR 22 return ticket and add the covered market. On a Sunday, Lavradores is shut and Penteada from 07:00 to 13:00 answers instead.
Funchal in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 69.1°F | 69.8°F | 71.6°F |
| Average low | 57.7°F | 58.8°F | 61.2°F |
| Monthly rain | 2.45 in | 1.78 in | 1.07 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 5.8 | 4.7 | 3.3 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 66.9°F | 68.0°F | 69.9°F |
| Cruise passengers | 108,699 | 88,918 | 19,434 |
Across those three months the air barely moves and the water does. Daytime highs climb 2.5 degrees from March to May, nights 3.5, while rainfall more than halves from 2.45 inches to 1.07 and the wet-day count drops from 5.8 to 3.3. The sea gains 3.0 degrees over the same span, from 66.9°F to 69.9°F, and April sits almost exactly in the middle of every one of those lines.
Shift four weeks later and you gain the driest of the three months, the warmest water and a waterfront that has emptied of ships, since cruise arrivals fall from 88,918 in April to 19,434 in May. Shift four weeks earlier and you pay for it in water: 66.9°F, an extra inch of rain and 5.8 wet days, as our March page sets out. April keeps most of May’s comfort while the winter season is still running.
Is April a good time to visit Funchal?
For garden walking, market mornings and long evenings outdoors, yes, without hedging. A 69.8°F afternoon and 13 hours of light is about as easy as a European April gets, and 1.78 inches of rain spread over 4.7 days rarely rewrites a plan. Swimmers who want warm water and quiet streets will find both in shorter supply, and anyone whose trip hangs on the sledges is betting on dry ground six days a week.
If that is you, May is the month to book. It brings the driest rainfall total of the three at 1.07 inches, the warmest sea at 69.9°F, the mildest nights at 61.2°F, and a port that has gone from 44 ship calls to a fraction of them. The cost is a slightly hotter walk uphill and gardens no longer enjoying their first flush of spring growth.
What April alone offers is the overlap: the gardens already on their 09:00 to 19:00 summer timetable while the big ships are still calling 44 times a month, which is a city at full volume under spring light rather than August heat.
The last word
Book the Monte morning first and let the rest of April arrange itself around the weather, because the one thing you cannot reserve is the ride down. Two more small mercies for a month of mixed skies: the cable car runs every single day of the year except Christmas Day, and Mercado da Penteada stays open until 21:00 on Fridays. The market is a fine place to end a damp afternoon with a bag of custard apples and no plan at all.
