FUNCHAL · MADEIRA · OCTOBER
Funchal lets go of summer slowly. October’s official normals put the afternoon at 77.4°F and the night at 66.6°F, the sea off the harbor at 75.6°F, and the rain gauge at 3.59 inches, close to four times what September collects. Seven days in an average October record measurable rain.
What the date buys is a sea you can still swim without thinking about it, gardens at full color, and afternoons that have come off the summer ceiling. What it costs is an afternoon or two rearranged indoors, and a wicker sledge run at Monte that refuses to go out on wet ground. Buy the cable car e-ticket whenever you like, since it stays valid 60 days. The sledges cannot be booked at all, which is the single most useful thing to know before you build the trip.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · FUNCHAL IN OCTOBER
October keeps the sea at 75.6°F and the afternoons at 77.4°F, then charges for it with 3.59 inches of rain across seven wet days, so book one indoor hour and keep the Monte day movable.
AVG HIGH 77.4°F · SEA 75.6°F · 7 WET DAYS · 11H25M OF DAYLIGHT ON THE 15TH
Go for: swimming at 75.6°F without a wetsuit, the Monte garden on a 77.4°F afternoon rather than a high-summer one, and a harbor a long way from its February cruise peak.
Think twice before: pinning the trip on the Monte wicker sledges: they take no bookings, they close on Sundays, and no three-person run goes out on wet ground.

Every figure here is Funchal’s own. The normals come from IPMA station 522, a thermometer at 58.0 meters above the sea in the city itself rather than a model grid cell. They describe the coastal city and nothing above it. Madeira’s high ground is colder and far wetter, and the far end of a coast keeps its own weather, so do not pack for a mountain trail on a seafront reading. Our Madeira guide handles the island beyond the city.

The 1991-2020 normals give October an average high of 77.4°F, an average low of 66.6°F and 3.59 inches of precipitation. They are published by IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, from its Funchal station at 58.0 meters. That provenance is worth a line when you compare tables online: a station reading and a modeled grid cell are not the same measurement, and this one is a real instrument standing in the city.
Seven days in an average October record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and three of those deliver 0.39 inch or more. Turned around, roughly 24 days of the month record nothing measurable at that threshold. One caution before you set these beside a US almanac: IPMA counts from 1 mm, American tables usually start at 0.10 inch, and the two counts are not interchangeable.
Day and night sit 10.8°F apart, narrow enough to pack light, wide enough to feel at dinner. Linen and shorts carry the afternoon, and one long-sleeve layer covers the 66.6°F nights. With rain spread over seven days rather than dumped in one storm, a packable shell beats an umbrella for a walk along the seafront. Our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the list.
On October 15 the sun rises at 08:10 and sets at 19:35 Madeira time, for 11 hours 25 minutes of daylight. That is late enough for a five o’clock swim and a seafront dinner in the last of the light. Note what shuts first: the Monte cable car stops at 17:45, nearly two hours before sunset, so everything on the hill has to be finished while the sky is still bright.
Can you swim in Funchal in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Funchal averages 75.6°F (24.2°C) in October. That comes from the Open-Meteo marine series as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would: the water you step into at nine in the morning is a little cooler than the headline. September’s equivalent reading is 76.1°F, November’s is 73.0°F.
For an American swimmer, 75.6°F is a long, unhurried swim. You will not gasp going in and you will not be counting the minutes to get out. No wetsuit is needed at that temperature for ordinary bathing. Anyone doing distance or sitting still in the water for an hour may still want one, and children chill faster than the number suggests.
We could not verify any wave-height or wind series for October off Funchal, so we give no swell figures and no flag statistics. Ask at the beach desk on the morning itself. The scope note applies to water as much as to air: these readings belong to Funchal, and the other end of the island’s coast keeps its own conditions.
How busy is Funchal in October? Crowds, prices and the tourist tax
Funchal’s ship season is a winter business. The port authority’s monthly counts give 113,839 cruise passengers in February and 108,699 in March against 10,816 in June and 4,071 in July, with 44 ship calls in February and three in July. Those numbers come off published charts that plot 2025 and 2026 side by side, so we read the higher, more recent series and lean on the shape rather than the decimal. October sits outside the published run, which stops at August, and we put no cruise figure on the month itself.
We could not verify an occupancy or room-rate series for the city, so we name no booking lead time in weeks and crown no month cheap or expensive. Ticketing is the part you can settle in advance. The cable car sells e-tickets valid for 60 days, so they can be bought before you fly out from the US. Blandy’s Wine Lodge asks visitors to book ahead and cancels free up to 24 hours before. The Monte sledges sell on site, same day, Monday to Saturday only.
Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights: EUR 14 per guest at most, EUR 28 for a couple on a week’s stay. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and the count restarts after an interrupted stay. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira with proof of tax address. Put it in the trip budget rather than meeting it at checkout.
The one purchase that earns its money in October specifically is a bookable indoor hour. Blandy’s Premium Tour on Avenida Arriaga runs 45 minutes for EUR 23 and finishes with three Madeira wines, with English departures Monday to Friday at 10:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 and extra Sunday slots. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can hold a slot and slide it when the forecast turns. Across seven wet days, that flexibility matters more than the EUR 6 between a one-way cable car ticket and the return.
Things to do in Funchal in October: Monte, the Lavradores market and Blandy’s

October is the first month of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden’s winter clock: from October through March it closes at 18:00 instead of 19:00, while the museum inside keeps its 17:00 close all year, last entry included. The month pays that back elsewhere. Afternoons at 77.4°F make the climb through the terraces far kinder than a high-summer visit, and the sea is still 2.6°F warmer than it will be in November, so a garden morning and a swim at five both fit into the same daylight.
Monte is the day most people build. The cable car climbs from the old town at EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way, running 08:45 to 17:45 every day but Christmas, free for children up to 6 and half price from 7 to 14. At the top station on Caminho das Babosas, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden spreads 70,000 square meters, about 17 acres, of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, at EUR 18 for adults and free for children up to 14 with an adult. Aggregator sites list EUR 12.50; the garden’s own page says 18.
Rain is what October does to that plan. The wicker sledges, EUR 30 for one rider, EUR 40 for two and EUR 60 for three, with two carreiros in white doing the steering, run Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00 and never on Sunday. No three-person run goes out in rain or on wet ground, and the ticket office can shut early when the queue is long or the weather turns. At seven wet days out of 31, roughly one day in four, treat the sledge as the movable item in the week.
Free in October as in any month: the Mercado dos Lavradores, open 07:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 07:00 to 14:00 on Saturday, closed Sundays and public holidays. Saturday morning is its best hour and Saturday afternoon is a locked door. The Mercado da Penteada answers the Sunday, 07:00 to 13:00. As for the Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira on Caminho do Meio at Bom Sucesso, with its 2,000-plus exotic species, we could not verify the current admission, so we quote no price.
Funchal in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one, with the sun up at 08:10: the Mercado dos Lavradores by 08:30 for the fruit stalls, then the cable car station for a cabin soon after 08:45. Monte Palace from 09:00, the museum before its 17:00 close, the sledge run down whenever the queue looks sane. Anyone riding the cable car back needs to be at the top station before 17:45. Dinner on the seafront catches the last light at 19:35, and by dessert, at 66.6°F, you will be glad of the layer.
Day two opens indoors by design: Blandy’s 10:30 English tour on Avenida Arriaga, 45 minutes and three wines, then lunch, then the water in the afternoon when it is closest to that 75.6°F daily maximum. If the sky turns, flip the order. Move the tour to the 16:00 departure, spend the morning under the market roof and in the old town, and hold the sledge for the next dry window. On a Sunday, Lavradores is shut and the Penteada market is the one open, 07:00 to 13:00.
Funchal in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 79.9°F (26.6°C) | 77.4°F (25.2°C) | 73.0°F (22.8°C) |
| Average low | 68.7°F (20.4°C) | 66.6°F (19.2°C) | 62.6°F (17.0°C) |
| Precipitation | 0.91 in | 3.59 in | 3.16 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 3.1 | 7.0 | 7.3 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 76.1°F | 75.6°F | 73.0°F |
Set side by side, September reads as the better weather month on paper: 79.9°F days, 68.7°F nights, 0.91 inch of rain across 3.1 wet days, against October’s 77.4, 66.6, 3.59 inches and 7.0 wet days. November pulls the air down to 73.0°F by day and 62.6°F at night, with 3.16 inches over 7.3 days. The water barely shifts between September and October, 76.1°F to 75.6°F, then drops to 73.0°F in November. Air normals are IPMA’s; the sea figures all come from the marine series.
Move four weeks earlier and you gain 2.5°F on the afternoon and a nearly dry month, while paying for it in heat on the Monte terraces for a sea only 0.5°F warmer. Move four weeks later and the rain total hardly changes, 3.16 inches against 3.59, but the sea surrenders 2.6°F and the afternoons surrender 4.4°F. Of the three, October is the last with a sea above 75°F. If swimming is the reason you are going, that settles the calendar.
Is October a good time to visit Funchal?
Yes for swimmers, garden walkers and anyone who wants the city warm without high-summer heat: 77.4°F afternoons, a 75.6°F sea, and around 24 days in the month with no measurable rain at the 0.04-inch threshold. It works less well for a traveler with one fixed outdoor afternoon and no room to shuffle it, because three October days deliver 0.39 inch or more and the sledges stop dead on wet ground.
If that rules October out, shift to September rather than November: 0.91 inch of rain over 3.1 days and a sea at 76.1°F, for the loss of nothing that matters to a swimmer. November keeps almost all of October’s rain, 3.16 inches over 7.3 days, and takes 4.4°F off the afternoon, which makes it the weaker of the two trades. Our month-by-month verdict for Portugal sets the mainland beside the islands.
October alone in this trio pairs a sea above 75°F with afternoons that have come off the summer ceiling, months ahead of the February harbor and its 44 ship calls.
The last word
Book the dates you can shuffle rather than the perfect forecast, because October hands out seven wet days in 31 and no calendar says which. Buy the cable car e-ticket early, since it holds for 60 days, keep the sledge and the swim as floating items, and let Blandy’s 24-hour cancellation absorb the afternoon that turns. One late option worth filing away: the Mercado da Penteada runs to 21:00 on Friday, the one food errand in town that survives a day that slipped. Flights and routings are in our guide to flying from the US.
