Day Trips from Madeira: Trail Fees, Cable Car Hours and the Porto Santo Ferry

You are on the island already, the car keys are in your pocket, and the only question left is what a single day buys. Madeira answers in fees and clock times: a ridge crossing with a price per head, a north-coast pool complex that costs less than a round of coffee, a cable car with published opening hours, and a ferry whose visitor fare the operator does not print on its public page. Since January 1, 2026, one of those days also needs a booking made before you leave your room.

One caveat before any planning starts. Every climate figure HERE comes from IPMA’s station 522 at Funchal, 58 m, on the south coast, and it does not describe the peaks: an average January high of 68.0°F says nothing useful about Pico do Areeiro at 1,857 m, which is colder and far wetter. And where a travel time is not published, we say so instead of rounding one up. The walking clock for PR1 is official. The drive to its trailhead is not.

Since January 1, 2026, every classified trail on the island, every PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and requires a booking. It runs EUR 4.50 per person for the general public and for visitors walking with a tourism company that holds no protocol with the IFCN, EUR 3 with a company that does, and residents of the Autonomous Region are exempt. PR1 is priced on its own, higher. Booking exists online and nowhere else, which reshapes more day plans than any road on the island.

Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo: distance, time, fee and the one-way rule

PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, the crossing from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, measures 6.1 km one way for about 3 hours of walking, rated Moderate, between 1,857 m and 1,491 m of altitude. That clock covers the trail and nothing else. Neither the trail sheet nor the tourism board publishes a driving time from Funchal up to the Areeiro parking, and we are not going to invent one: ask your rental desk or your driver the night before, then add it at both ends of the three hours.

Two fares live on the same path. The full crossing costs EUR 10.50 for anyone over 12 and is free for children of 12 and under. The shorter out-and-back to the Pedra Rija viewpoint costs EUR 4.50 on the same terms. PR1 is also carved out of the pass ladder, so the EUR 9.00 day pass that covers two trails or more, the EUR 22.50 three-day and the EUR 52.50 seven-day, buy you every other trail and not this one.

Pedra Rija is the point where the walk stops being reversible. From Pico do Areeiro to that viewpoint you may turn around whenever you please. Beyond it the route runs one direction only, toward Pico Ruivo, with no possibility of coming back along the same path. Someone who changes their mind late does not turn back, they finish, in whatever light and weather the afternoon has become. The emergency number across Madeira, as across Portugal and the European Union, is 112.

Booking is mandatory, online only, through SIMplifica, the Regional Government’s digital portal, and it applies to individuals, to groups and to anyone walking with a tourism company alike. You pick an entry time in 30-minute slots, and the slots run from sunrise to sunset. Funchal gets about 10 hours 17 minutes of daylight on January 15 against 14 hours 08 minutes on July 15, so winter simply holds fewer of them. Take the earliest slot you can face, especially if the crossing is your first walk of the trip.

Porto Moniz and the north in a day

The north is a road day with water at the end of it. Porto Moniz sits at the island’s northwestern corner, and the walks people bolt onto the drive, PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes and PR 6.1 Levada do Risco, were both open on September 8, 2026, while PR 4 Levada do Barreiro was restricted that same day. Status is published trail by trail and shifts with weather and works. Check it the morning you leave, not the week before, and ask locally for the drive time, which nobody prints.

The serviced pool complex charges EUR 3 and comes with changing rooms, a children’s pool, a bar and a first-aid post, open 09:00 to 19:00 in summer and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter. The Cachalote pools next door are free and open at all hours. What we could not read is the municipal side: no council page for the pools opened for us, so that EUR 3 rests on Visit Madeira’s own sheet and concordant guides, and the calendar dates where summer hours become winter hours appear nowhere we could find. Cabo Girão and Câmara de Lobos: getting there, tickets and how long to allow

The Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass floor bolted to the sea cliff above Câmara de Lobos, costs EUR 3. Children of 12 and under go free, and so do registered residents of Madeira, which means a visiting family pays for its adults. The timetable turns twice a year: 08:30 to 20:00 from March to October, an hour earlier at 19:00 from November to February, a December closing that falls well after dark. No institutional page opened for us here either, so confirm the EUR 3 at the booth.

That still leaves most of a half day. Câmara de Lobos lies directly below the cliff, and Funchal is close enough that the afternoon can finish indoors: Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs its Premium Tour at EUR 23, 45 minutes long, ending on three Madeira wines, with English departures Monday to Friday at 10:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 plus extra Sunday slots. The lodge advises booking ahead and cancels free up to 24 hours out. The city’s other fixtures sit in things to do in Madeira.

Porto Santo by ferry: crossing time, fares and booking

Porto Santo is the sand answer. Madeira’s own shoreline is stone and pebble, and the neighboring island is a long beach with a boat attached, which is why the crossing gets marketed as a day out rather than a transfer. Taken that way, it consumes the day at both ends: the boat, a few hours of beach in the middle, the boat again. Taken as one night away, it turns into a different and considerably calmer trip, and the beach gets its evening.

The fare on Porto Santo Line’s home page is not a visitor’s fare. It advertises a tourist-class crossing ‘From EUR 47.02’ and a one-day cruise ‘From EUR 72.02’, then footnotes both: those figures apply to passengers registered on the SIMplifica portal with a residence certificate, or represent the value left after the Social Mobility Allowance refund for Madeira residents, with a fuel surcharge added on top. What a visitor actually pays is not printed publicly. It appears in the booking engine, once your dates are in.

The crossing time is the second blank. Neither the operator’s public pages nor the tourism board prints it, and the third-party booking sites that do contradict each other, on the duration and on the number of weekly sailings both, so none of their figures are repeated here. Get the number from Porto Santo Line itself, inside the booking flow or by phone, before you commit to a same-day return. A day trip whose length you learned from a comparison site is a day trip built on a guess.

Monte by cable car: fares, hours and the way back down

The Funchal to Monte cable car costs EUR 22 return and EUR 16 one way. Children up to 6 ride free, 7 to 14 pay half, and an e-ticket stays valid for 60 days after purchase, so it can sit on your phone from the flight onward. Service runs 08:45 to 17:45, every day of the year except Christmas Day. Those closing hours, rather than the queue, are what turn Monte into a morning outing or an afternoon one.

The wicker sledges, the carros de cesto pushed by two carreiros in white, cost EUR 30 for one person, EUR 40 for two and EUR 60 for three. They cannot be booked. Tickets are sold on site and for the same day only, the office can shut early when the queue is long or the weather turns, and no three-person ride runs in rain or on wet ground. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, so Sundays are out. Buy the EUR 16 one way only if a closed office would not wreck your afternoon.

At the top station, on Caminho das Babosas, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden spreads 70,000 square meters of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum. Adults pay EUR 18 and children up to 14 enter free with an adult. Mind the two timetables: 09:00 to 19:00 from April to September, an hour less from October to March, with the museum closing at 17:00 all year and the whole garden shut on December 25. Aggregators quoting EUR 12.50 are wrong, the garden’s own page says 18. Down in Bom Sucesso, the Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira holds more than 2,000 exotic species.

Madeira by month: booking slots, winter closings and trail conditions

Season sets the slot list and the closures. Trail entries run sunrise to sunset, and Funchal sees about 10 hours 17 minutes of daylight on January 15 against 14 hours 08 minutes on July 15, so winter days simply hold fewer of them. Wet ground cancels the three-person sledge outright. PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were both restricted on September 8, 2026: check status before you drive, and time the rest with the month-by-month view.
