Funchal in August: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Things to Do

August is the month Funchal’s rain gauge barely wakes up. IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, gives its 1991-2020 normals for station 522 in the city, a real thermometer 190 feet above the harbor: an average high of 80.2°F, an average low of 69.3°F and 0.05 inches of precipitation for the whole month, with measurable rain on 0.4 days. The water off the seafront averages 76.6°F, and on August 15 the sun sets at 8:53 p.m. island time.

What the month takes away is harder to read off a forecast. The port authority counted three cruise calls in August against 44 in March, so the crowd in the old town arrives by plane, not by gangway. And these figures describe Funchal at sea level, not the ridges above it: the island’s high ground runs colder and far wetter, a different trip with a different packing list, and the rest of the island belongs to our Madeira guide.

August gives Funchal 80.2°F afternoons, 0.4 days of measurable rain and water at 76.6°F, with three cruise calls against March’s 44, making it the driest and warmest of the three summer months compared here.

Go for: swimming at 76.6°F, a month whose normals hold 0.05 inches of rain, the cable car up to Monte at EUR 22 return, and evenings that keep their light until 8:53 p.m.

Think twice before: planning the Monte sledges on a Sunday, when the carreiros do not run, or counting on the museum inside the Monte Palace garden after 17:00, in any season.

Ferries, rental cars and the rest of the island sit in our Madeira guide, and the wider question of which month to fly to Portugal at all is answered in the 12-month verdict. Everything below is dated to August in Funchal itself.

Every air figure here is measured, not modeled: IPMA’s 1991-2020 normals for station 522, a thermometer at 58.0 m, or 190 feet, above sea level, inside Funchal itself rather than a grid cell drawn over the Atlantic. That distinction matters more on Madeira than in most places. The reading describes a city built on a south-facing coastal slope, and the mountainous interior runs colder and far wetter than anything in the normals below. An 80.2°F afternoon on the Avenida is not an 80.2°F afternoon on a levada trail inland.

In an average August, 0.4 days record at least 1 mm of rain. That is IPMA’s threshold, not the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so the two counts do not swap. Translated, it means a single wet day turns up in roughly two Augusts out of five, and the thirty-year record averages zero days at 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. Monthly precipitation comes to 0.05 inches, against 0.91 inches in September. A washed-out afternoon is not the planning risk in this month.

Between 80.2°F by day and 69.3°F at night sits a gap of 10.9°F, modest by continental standards and wide enough to be felt on a seafront that catches the breeze after dark. One long-sleeved layer covers it, worn twice, at dinner and in the cable car. Anyone going up to Monte should pack a second one, since the city’s normals stop at the shoreline and the slope above keeps its own weather.

On August 15 the sun rises at 7:30 a.m. and sets at 8:53 p.m. island time, 13 hours 23 minutes of daylight (the raw calculation gives 06:30 and 19:53 UTC, and Madeira runs an hour ahead in summer). That leaves a long tail of evening the cable car does not cover: the last cabin down from Monte leaves at 17:45, more than three hours before the light goes. Put the high ground in the morning and keep sea level for the late hours.

Can you swim in Funchal in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off Funchal averages 76.6°F in August, and the number carries a footnote worth reading. It is the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024 from the Open-Meteo marine model, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would show. On the same series, July comes in at 75.0°F and September at 76.1°F, which puts August half a degree ahead of its nearest rival for warmth.

At 76.6°F you get in without ceremony. There is a brief moment of adjusting, no wetsuit for an ordinary swim, and children who refuse to come out. Funchal does its swimming off bathing platforms, ladders and pebble shore rather than long sand, so a pair of water shoes is worth more in the bag here than a beach umbrella.

Wind and swell are the hole in our data. We found no monthly wind or wave series for Funchal that we would put in print, so we publish none, and the 76.6°F reading describes temperature only, never sea state. This is open Atlantic coast rather than a sheltered bay, and a swell can arrive in any month. Check the forecast on the morning you plan to swim rather than the week before you fly.

How busy is Funchal in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

Funchal’s demand year runs upside down compared with most of Europe, at least where we can measure it. APRAM, the regional port authority, logged 113,839 cruise passengers in February, 108,699 in March and 88,918 in April, then 19,434 in May, 10,816 in June and 4,071 in July, read off its published monthly charts. Ship calls follow the same shape: 44 in March and 44 in April against 3 in July and 3 in August. Roughly twenty-five winter cruise passengers step ashore here for every one in July.

Booking pressure in August therefore lands on fixed capacity rather than on the waterfront at 8 a.m. The cable car sells e-tickets valid for 60 days after purchase, so buy before you fly, EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way. Blandy’s asks visitors to book its tours ahead and cancels free up to 24 hours out. The Monte sledges cannot be booked at all, tickets being sold on site and for the same day only.

Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most however long the stay. It applies to every paid overnight in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and it starts again after an interrupted stay, which catches travelers who split a trip between the city and elsewhere on the island. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and Madeira residents on proof of tax address.

One place where paying more genuinely changes an August day is the descent from Monte. A return cable-car ticket costs EUR 22 and the last cabin leaves at 17:45, while the Monte Palace garden stays open to 19:00 from April to September. Buy the EUR 16 one-way instead, take the morning up there and the late hour among the planting, then ride a taxi down. Keep the taxi fare as an unknown line in your budget rather than a number.

Things to do in Funchal in August

Dry ground is the August dividend, and one Funchal ride depends on it outright. No three-person sledge runs in rain or on wet ground, and the Carreiros office can shut early when the weather turns or the queue grows. With 0.4 wet days in the August normals against 3.1 in September, that constraint almost never bites now. The same dryness pays for open-air market mornings and dinner outdoors without a fallback plan.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden stands at Caminho das Babosas, right at the cable car’s top station: 70,000 square meters, about 17 acres, of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, EUR 18 for adults and free for children up to 14 with an adult. From April to September it opens 09:00 to 19:00. Down in the old town, the Mercado dos Lavradores trades 07:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 07:00 to 14:00 on Saturday, closed Sundays and public holidays. Saturday morning is the best hour of the week there, Saturday afternoon a locked door.

Tariffs and timetables barely notice the season. Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga charges EUR 23 for its 45-minute Premium Tour and a tasting of three Madeira wines in August exactly as in February, with English departures Monday to Friday at 10:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. The cable car keeps the same 08:45 to 17:45 every day of the year. August moves the air around all of it, plus one clock: the garden’s summer close at 19:00 against 18:00 in winter, while the museum inside still shuts at 17:00 whatever the month.

Free in August, as in any month: children up to six ride the cable car at no charge and 7 to 14 pay half, children up to 14 enter Monte Palace free with an adult, and school groups go in free. Walking the Lavradores aisles costs nothing. We found no August-only free day at any site we checked, so we claim none. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira at Bom Sucesso, on Caminho do Meio, holds more than 2,000 exotic species, and we could not verify its current admission price.

Funchal in August: a two-day itinerary

Day one begins early, though barely in the dark: sunrise falls at 7:30 a.m. Take the Mercado dos Lavradores at 07:00 while the fish counter is full, then walk over for the cable car’s first cabin at 08:45 and buy the EUR 16 one-way. Monte Palace from 09:00, the museum before its 17:00 close, lunch up the hill. Ride a sledge down before 18:00 on any day except Sunday, EUR 30 solo and EUR 40 for two. The whole evening is still ahead, with light until 8:53 p.m.

Day two belongs to the water and the wine. Swim in the morning while the sea reads 76.6°F, then take the 14:00 English tour at Blandy’s for EUR 23 and be back on the street by quarter to three. Should the rare wet day land, the sledges are the first casualty, so move the wine lodge earlier and give the afternoon to the covered market. On a Sunday, Lavradores is closed and the Mercado da Penteada takes over from 07:00 to 13:00.

Funchal in August vs July and September

Across the three months the air hardly shifts and the rain does all the work. July averages a 77.7°F high and a 67.5°F low, August 80.2 and 69.3, September 79.9 and 68.7, a spread of 2.5°F between the warmest and coolest daytime figure. Precipitation separates them properly: 0.07 inches in July, 0.05 in August, 0.91 in September, with wet days running 0.3, then 0.4, then 3.1. The marine series gives 75.0°F, 76.6°F and 76.1°F, so August takes the water by half a degree.

Shift four weeks later and you trade a third of a degree of daytime warmth for roughly eight times the wet days and eighteen times the monthly rainfall. That can be a fair deal if you want a quieter shoulder feel and keep a museum in reserve. Shift four weeks earlier into July and nights drop 1.8°F, the water gives back 1.6°F, and the dryness is effectively unchanged. Cruise traffic settles nothing either way, with three calls in July and three in August against 44 in March.

Is August a good time to visit Funchal?

Yes for most travelers, and the arithmetic makes the case: 0.05 inches of rain, 80.2°F afternoons and the warmest sea of the summer at 76.6°F. It suits swimmers, families tied to school holidays, and anyone who wants the Monte sledges to be running rather than rained off. It suits serious walkers less well, because a coastal thermometer says nothing about the ridges, where the air is colder and the rain heavier than anything in these normals.

If the answer is no, July is the near-twin worth booking: nights 1.8°F cooler, the same near-zero rain count, water only 1.6°F behind, and the detail sits in our July guide. September is the month to skip if rain would spoil the vacation, since 3.1 wet days and 0.91 inches are a different proposition from 0.4 days and 0.05 inches, even with the air staying within half a degree of August.

No other month of the three offers the full combination: 76.6°F water, 0.05 inches of rain and a port logging three ship calls where March logged 44.

The last word

Book the bed, buy the cable-car e-ticket before you fly since it stays valid 60 days, and leave the sledges to the day itself, because they take no reservations and the office can close early when the queue is long. Then use the length of an August evening: on a Friday the Mercado da Penteada trades until 21:00, seven minutes past sunset on the 15th, and it costs nothing to walk in.
