PORTUGAL · THE ALGARVE · OCTOBER
On September 30, lifeguards leave the listed beaches of Lagos, Faro, Tavira and six other Algarve councils. Under the 2026 bathing order, Albufeira keeps its 25 listed beaches watched into October, and only until October 15. Faro’s official normals still put the average October high at 73.9°F, and the sea off the coast averages 67.3°F as a daily maximum.
A fall trip to the coast gets warm afternoons, 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight at mid-month and a coast road that costs nothing to drive: A22 toll rates stay set at zero under Lei n.º 37/2024. It also gets rain on 6.0 days in an average October at Faro, against 1.9 in September, and a swim that is unsupervised everywhere outside Albufeira.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · THE ALGARVE IN OCTOBER
Go for warm afternoons, a 67.3°F sea and toll-free A22 driving, and base in Albufeira before October 15 if lifeguarded swims matter to you.
IPMA FARO NORMALS 1991–2020 · LIFEGUARDS IN ALBUFEIRA TO OCT 15 · A22 TOLL-FREE
Go for: 73.9°F afternoons at Faro, the warmest sea of the three months around it, the Fortaleza de Sagres without summer heat, and a guided paddle into Benagil.
Think twice before: counting on lifeguards outside Albufeira or after October 15, packing only for daytime, or planning to swim into the Benagil cave: it is banned.

Where to base yourself along the coast lives in our Algarve guide, and how October ranks against the rest of Portugal’s year in the best-time verdict. Most Algarve trips fly into Faro: our US flights guide has the routings, and the Faro guide covers the town around the airport.
Algarve weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| Faro in October (IPMA normals 1991–2020) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average high | 73.9°F |
| Average low | 60.4°F |
| Precipitation | 2.20 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 6.0 |
| Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more | 2.0 |
| Daylight on October 15 | 11 h 18 min |
| Sunrise and sunset on October 15, Lisbon time | 7:38 a.m. · 6:56 p.m. |
Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, station 554 at Faro, 5 m above sea level, averaged over 1991–2020. It is a station normal, not a model grid cell, and it gives October an average high of 73.9°F, an average low of 60.4°F and 2.20 inches of precipitation. Faro sits in the eastern half of a coast about 150 km (93 miles) long. High ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the western end keeps its own weather, so a hike in the hills or a day out west needs its own forecast.
IPMA counts 6.0 days in an average October with at least 1 mm of rain (0.04 inch), close to one day in five. Of those, 2.0 reach 10 mm (0.39 inch), a soaking that ends a beach afternoon. The other four sit between the two thresholds, enough to wet a cliff path and send you under an awning for a spell. Those thresholds are the national service’s own. US tables count from 0.10 inch, so an American rain-day figure and this one do not compare directly.
Afternoon and night sit 13.5°F apart at Faro, from 73.9°F down to 60.4°F. Shorts and a T-shirt cover the hours around lunch. After sunset you want long pants and a sweater or light jacket, plus a packable rain shell for the wet days. Our Portugal packing list has the full kit.
On October 15 the sun rises at 7:38 a.m. and sets at 6:56 p.m. Lisbon time, for 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight. For a west-facing viewpoint such as Ponta da Piedade near Lagos, plan to arrive by about 6:30 p.m. Start any long clifftop walk no later than early afternoon so it finishes in daylight.
Can you swim in the Algarve in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off the Algarve averages 67.3°F in October, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. That number is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a 24-hour average. It also comes from a different source and a different period than IPMA’s Faro air normals.
At 67.3°F the first plunge is brisk, and a shorty wetsuit makes a long swim easier. Albufeira is the only Algarve council with lifeguards in October, on its 25 listed beaches, and its season ends on October 15 under Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1. Anywhere else, and in Albufeira from the 16th, the swim is unsupervised whatever the water temperature says. Swimming into the Benagil sea cave is banned outright, from the beach or from a boat, with or without a float.
We found no verified wind or swell series for October, so we give no figure for either. Check the day’s marine forecast before a beach or a paddle tour. The national environment agency publishes bathing-water quality during the season, and the 2026 order gave no assured lifeguard cover to any beach it does not list.
How busy is the Algarve in October? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for the Algarve, so we rank no month cheaper or busier. The one season marker we can verify is the beach calendar, and by the middle of October the last lifeguards on the coast have gone home.
Without booking-curve data, our lead time is an editorial rule of thumb: reserve rooms and a rental car three to four weeks ahead (est.), with free cancellation where you can get it, since Faro averages 6.0 rain days in October. A car gives you the whole coast, and the A22 runs its length toll-free. Our car-rental guide covers insurance and pickup, and where to stay in Portugal helps pick the base.
We could not verify a tourist-tax rate for any Algarve council for 2026, so we give no amount. Ask when you book whether a nightly tax applies to your stay, who collects it and whether it is payable at check-in. Our Portugal trip-cost guide has the rest of the budget.
Since July 2025, you can no longer rent a kayak and paddle into Benagil alone. A licensed guided kayak or paddleboard tour is the way in, and the one spend we would stretch an October budget for: a paddle group may stay inside up to eight minutes, against two for a motorized boat. We could not verify tour prices, so compare operators and confirm the guide’s license when you book.
Things to do in the Algarve in October

Against September and November, October has the warmest sea in our series, 67.3°F, with afternoons near 74°F at Faro for cliff walks and fortress visits. Its first half also keeps lifeguards on Albufeira’s listed beaches, something November never gets under the 2026 order.
At Benagil, the cave is closed to swimmers and to landings under Edital 019/2024, amended by Edital 009/2025. Motorized boats keep 15 m (49 feet) off the arches and enter by the western one, while kayaks and paddleboards use the eastern arch, with a cap on how many craft are inside at once. The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., last entry at 5 p.m., and one ticket covers the fortress and the Sagres promontory. We could not read the full adult price at source, since the monument’s price table loads by script. Ask at the gate.
In September, Faro’s average high of 79.5°F sits 14.1°F above a 65.4°F sea. In October the spread falls to 6.6°F, with 73.9°F air over a 67.3°F sea, so the beach and the water sit much closer in temperature. At Sagres, closing time comes 1 hour 26 minutes before the mid-month sunset. Plan the fortress for the morning and watch the sunset from a viewpoint instead.
Sundays and public holidays are free at the Fortaleza de Sagres until 2 p.m., but only for residents of Portugal, so visitors pay the full ticket every day. Driving the A22 costs nothing under its zero toll rate. The Algarve’s public beaches and clifftop paths charge no entry.
The Algarve in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one heads west. Reach the Fortaleza de Sagres at its 9:30 a.m. opening, almost two hours after the 7:38 a.m. sunrise, and give the fortress and promontory the morning. Drive east to Lagos for lunch, then spend the warmest hours on a beach there, knowing Lagos has no lifeguards after September 30. Walk out to Ponta da Piedade by 6:30 p.m. for the 6:56 p.m. sunset, and keep the sweater in the car for the drive back.
Day two runs east on the toll-free A22. Book a morning guided paddle into Benagil, then, if the date falls on or before October 15, swim in the afternoon at one of Albufeira’s 25 lifeguarded beaches (our Albufeira guide has them). If one of October’s 2.0 heavy-rain days lands on your trip, or the operator calls off the tour for sea conditions, give the day to Tavira or Faro’s old town, both on the same motorway.
The Algarve in October vs September and November
| Faro normals (IPMA) and sea | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 79.5°F | 73.9°F | 67.3°F |
| Average low | 64.9°F | 60.4°F | 53.4°F |
| Precipitation | 0.85 in | 2.20 in | 2.97 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 1.9 | 6.0 | 6.6 |
| Sea, mean of daily maxima | 65.4°F | 67.3°F | 65.3°F |
| Lifeguards (2026 order) | Albufeira and nine other councils to Sep 30 | Albufeira only, to Oct 15 | No council season |
By IPMA’s Faro normals, the average high drops from 79.5°F in September to 73.9°F in October and 67.3°F in November, and the low from 64.9°F to 60.4°F to 53.4°F. Rain climbs faster: 0.85 inch over 1.9 wet days in September, 2.20 inches over 6.0 in October, 2.97 inches over 6.6 in November. Open-Meteo’s daily-maximum sea figures peak in the middle month, at 67.3°F in October against 65.4°F in September and 65.3°F in November.
Move four weeks earlier, to September, and you gain 5.6°F on the afternoon high, about four fewer rain days, 1.35 inches less rain and lifeguards in Lagos, Faro, Tavira and the six other councils that close on September 30. You give up 1.9°F of sea. Move four weeks later, to November, and you lose 6.6°F on the high, 7.0°F on the low, 2.0°F of sea and every lifeguarded beach, for 0.77 inch more rain. We found no price data to set against those losses.
Is October a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for travelers who want warm afternoons at Sagres, Lagos and the cliff paths, a toll-free coast road and a 67.3°F sea without September’s 79.5°F highs. Swimmers do well too if they base in Albufeira and arrive by October 15. It is the wrong month for families who want a lifeguard at whichever beach they choose, and for anyone who needs a guaranteed dry beach week.
If the answer is no, pick September. Faro averages a 79.5°F high and only 1.9 rain days that month, lifeguards stay on the listed beaches of nine councils plus Albufeira until the 30th, and the sea runs just 1.9°F cooler than in October. Our September guide has the details.
No other month in our three-month comparison pairs a 67.3°F sea with afternoons near 74°F and a first fortnight of lifeguards in Albufeira.
The last word
Decide on the swim first. If supervised beaches matter, book Albufeira and plan the beach days for October 15 or earlier. If the trip is forts, cliffs and long lunches, base anywhere on the coast and drive the A22 end to end without paying a toll. Before adding a Lisbon leg, know that the zero rate covers the A22, the A24, the A25, the Marão tunnel and parts of the A28 and A23, and it is not a general rule for Portuguese motorways. Our car guide explains the tolls beyond the Algarve.
