By mid-May the Algarve has its afternoons back. The official Faro thermometer puts the month at 74.3°F by day, rain has thinned to under four days, and the sun is up for more than fourteen hours. What the coast has not got back is its water: the sea off the Algarve averages 63.4°F, a very different proposition from the same sand in August.
That gap between air and water is the month in one line. May hands you cliff paths, parking spaces and dinner in daylight at 8:30 p.m. It withholds warm swimming, and on the nine councils listed beside Albufeira in the 2026 bathing order it withholds lifeguards until June 1. Where you land on that trade decides whether you book May or shift a few weeks.

The climate figures here come from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for sea and atmosphere, station 554 at Faro: 1991–2020 normals, read off a real thermometer five meters above sea level rather than a model grid cell. May runs 74.3°F by day, 59.0°F at night, 1.03 inches of rain. One caveat travels with them: Faro sits at the eastern end of a coast roughly 150 km long, and the high ground inland is colder and a good deal wetter than anything on this table.
Rain shows up on 3.8 days in an average May at IPMA’s threshold of 1 mm (0.04 inch), and only 0.7 day reaches 10 mm (0.39 inch). The thresholds are worth reading twice, because US monthly tables usually count days at 0.10 inch and the two counts are not interchangeable. Practically, that single heavy day can carry more than a third of the month’s total, which makes it the one worth a plan rather than a poncho.
The spread between afternoon and night is 15.3°F, and you feel all of it twice a day. Breakfast on a terrace at eight is cool, a cliff walk at two is warm enough to want water, and the 59.0°F low arrives while you are still outdoors at dinner. Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On May 15 the sun rises at 6:21 a.m. and sets at 8:34 p.m. Lisbon time, giving 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight. That is enough to start a coast walk at six in the evening and finish it dry-shod, and enough that a restaurant table booked for eight is still an outdoor table with a view.
Can you swim in the Algarve in May? 63.4°F water and where the lifeguards are
Sea surface off the Algarve averages 63.4°F in May, from Open-Meteo’s marine data over 2015 to 2024. Read that number the way it was built: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day averaged across the month, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Water at seven in the morning is cooler than 63.4°F, and the figure never promised otherwise.
In the water, low sixties is a brisk ten minutes for a confident adult and a shriek for most children. Anyone who owns a shorty wetsuit should pack it. Cover matters as much as temperature in May: the 2026 order, Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1 published April 30, opens Albufeira’s guarded season on May 15 across its 25 listed beaches, while Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo all wait for June 1.
On wind and swell we carry nothing dated to May for this coast, and a rounded guess would be worse than the gap. What the order does add is a caution: a beach not listed in it had no assured lifeguard cover on the day of publication, and bathing-water quality during the season is published by the national environment agency. Outside Albufeira, a May swim is an unsupervised swim whatever the thermometer reads.
How busy is the Algarve in May? Crowds, prices and how far ahead to book
No source prices an Algarve hotel room, so you will find no percentages here. What is dated, and public, is the switch that pulls demand: nine councils turn their lifeguards on June 1, and June’s afternoons run 5.9°F warmer than May’s on 0.20 inch of rain for the whole month. May sits on the near side of both events, which is most of what people mean when they call it shoulder season.
One pinch point survives that logic. From May 15, Albufeira holds the only guarded beaches on the coast, all 25 of them, and families with small children in May converge on the same few square miles. For a beachfront room there in the second half of the month, six weeks ahead (est.) is a sensible target. West toward Lagos or east toward Tavira, the pressure drops off quickly.
On the municipal tourist tax we hold our fire. Nothing in the sourced material carries a 2026 rate for Algarve councils, and a made-up figure would do you more damage than a blank. The one line where spending more genuinely changes the month is the car. May’s payoff is strung along that 150 km of coast, and no bus timetable delivers you to a clifftop at seven in the morning. The A22, the Via do Infante, is reported to have been toll-free since January 1, 2025, though we could not confirm it on an operator page a machine can read, so check before you drive. Things to do in the Algarve in May: Benagil’s kayak rules and Sagres hours
May’s edge over June is the walking. At 74.3°F against June’s 80.2°F, the coast paths stay comfortable at midday, and with 3.8 rain days against April’s 5.3, the ground under your boots has usually dried out. The month also runs a split beach map that no other month except October produces: guarded sand at Albufeira from the 15th, and an empty, unguarded coast either side of it.
The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00, with one ticket covering the fortress and the walk out onto the promontory. We could not read the adult price at source, since the monument serves its price table in JavaScript, so ask at the gate. At Benagil, Edital 019/2024 from the maritime authority, in force since August 13, 2024, bans swimming into the cave from the beach or from a boat and bans any craft from landing inside. Guided kayak and paddleboard trips are allowed with a licensed guide, capped in number and in time. Motorized boats keep 15 meters off the arches and enter by the western arch, paddlers by the eastern.
What costs nothing in May is the coast itself: the stairs and clifftop loop at Ponta da Piedade, the Albufeira beaches now that the lifeguards are back on them, and an evening in the lanes of Tavira with two extra hours of light. One freebie will not apply to you: Sagres is free on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00, but only for people resident in Portugal.
The Algarve in May: a 2-day itinerary
Day one is built around a 6:21 a.m. sunrise. Out of the door by 8 for the Ponta da Piedade cliffs, when the light is still sideways and the lot is empty. Late morning in Lagos, then lunch inland, out of the strongest sun. Book the guided Benagil paddle for early afternoon. Back on the coast path at 5, sunset at 8:34 p.m., dinner after that with the fleece the 59.0°F low will ask for.
Day two runs east and slower. Sagres gates open at 09:30, and the promontory walk fills a morning; the drive back along the coast leaves an afternoon for Faro‘s walled old town or Tavira’s bridge and lanes. If the weather turns, which it does on 0.7 day a month at 0.39 inch or more, drop the cliffs and spend those hours in the towns: markets, a long lunch, and the paths again once the band has gone through.

Across the three months, air temperature climbs in even steps and rain collapses: 1.54 inches in April, 1.03 in May, 0.20 in June, on 5.3, 3.8 and 0.8 wet days. The sea keeps its own schedule. April reads 63.5°F, a tenth of a degree above May, which tells you how slowly this water responds, and only in June does it break away to 66.9°F. All of it comes from the same IPMA station and the same marine series.
Shift four weeks forward and you buy 5.9°F of afternoon, 3.5°F of sea and lifeguards on every listed beach, and you pay for it with company and rates on the near side of high season. Shift four weeks back to April and you keep the quiet, lose five degrees of daytime warmth, gain a day and a half of rain, and swim in water no warmer than May’s, with no guarded beach anywhere on the coast.
Is May a good time to visit the Algarve?
For walkers, drivers, kayakers and anyone who treats the sea as scenery, May is close to the best the calendar offers: 74.3°F, under four wet days, fourteen hours of light. For a family whose whole plan is beach mornings and afternoon swims, it is a compromise, because 63.4°F is cold to a seven-year-old and the guarded sand sits in one council until June 1.
If that describes your trip, take June. The water arrives at 66.9°F, the rain effectively stops at 0.20 inch for the month, and every listed beach from Aljezur to Tavira has cover from the first of the month. The cost is heat at 80.2°F on the cliff paths and a coast that no longer feels like it belongs to you at nine in the morning.
May is one of only two months in the year, October being the other, when Albufeira has lifeguards and nobody else does, which means you can take a guarded swim and an empty cliff path on the same day.
The last word
Decide the water question first and the rest of May falls into place: if the sea is scenery, book it now and put the car budget ahead of the beachfront room. One last date to keep in view, because it shows how narrow these seasons can be. The shortest guarded stretch in the whole 2026 order belongs to a single beach in Castro Marim, July 1 to August 31, and nothing on this coast is guarded by default.
