Before the sun clears the Caribbean, Hopkins is already awake: a drum somewhere in the village, a fisherman hauling a dugout up the sand, the smell of fry jacks and coffee drifting from a kitchen. Behind the village the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range rise as a dark green wall, and offshore the cayes of the southern barrier reef wait. Hopkins is a Garifuna village with a jungle, a river, a waterfall park, a drumming town and a string of islands all within reach of a morning start.

What are the best day trips from Hopkins?
The best day trips from Hopkins head in three directions: inland to the rainforest and its waterfalls, up the coast to Dangriga, and out to sea to the cayes of the southern reef. Each one shows a different side of the Stann Creek District, and together they make a week of mornings easy to fill.
- Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, recognized internationally as the world’s first jaguar preserve, for forest trails and the chance of wildlife.
- Mayflower Bocawina National Park, for ziplining, waterfall rappelling and the hike to Antelope Falls.
- Dangriga, the cultural center of the Garifuna people, for drumming heritage, local food and a look at a working Belizean town.
- Tobacco Caye, a tiny island of about three acres on the reef, for a day far from any road.
- South Water Caye Marine Reserve, a vast protected stretch of mangrove and reef inside the barrier reef.
- Glover’s Reef Atoll, the far outpost of the southern boat trips from Dangriga.
- Barrier reef tours run by Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort, scheduled daily when the weather allows.
The rainforest trips lean toward walkers and thrill seekers, the cayes toward people who want salt water and quiet, and Dangriga toward anyone curious about the culture that shapes Hopkins itself.
The best day trips from Hopkins
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
Cockscomb Basin is a nature reserve in the Stann Creek District, designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1984 and run by the Belize Forest Department and the Belize Audubon Society. It is recognized internationally as the world’s first jaguar preserve. The sanctuary lies off the Southern Highway, about 20 miles south of Dangriga Town, so the trip is a matter of reaching the highway and turning in toward the Cockscomb Range.
The draw is the forest itself: tall trees, the chatter of birds, the sound of a creek somewhere off the trail, and the knowledge that jaguars live here. Big cats are secretive, and what most hikers actually find are tracks in the mud, a flash of color from a toucan or a motmot, and a thick green canopy that closes overhead. Hamanasi lists a visit to the sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve among its scheduled rainforest adventures, which is one way to go from Hopkins.
Bring insect repellent and shoes that can get muddy. The sanctuary suits walkers and birders who enjoy slow, quiet time under trees more than a list of attractions.

Mayflower Bocawina National Park
Mayflower Bocawina is the adventure park of the area. It was established in 2001, is managed by the Friends of Mayflower Bocawina National Park, and sits in the Category 2 class of the IUCN list. Visitors can go ziplining through the canopy, rappel down waterfalls and hike to Antelope Falls.
The park is a good match for travelers who want their jungle with a little adrenaline. The zipline gives a view over the treetops that a trail never does, and the waterfall rappelling puts you right in the spray. The hike to Antelope Falls is the quieter option for anyone who prefers walking through rainforest to dropping through it.
Hamanasi offers a Mayflower Jungle and Waterfall Hike as one of its scheduled rainforest adventures, and those adventures are included in its Reef and Rainforest Package. Wear clothes that can get wet, and pack a change for the ride home.
Dangriga and Garifuna culture
Dangriga, once called Stann Creek Town, sits on the Caribbean coast at the mouth of the North Stann Creek River. It is the capital of the Stann Creek District and the cultural center of the Garifuna people, home to roughly 9,500 residents. Hopkins is a Garifuna village too, so a day in Dangriga widens the story you have already started to hear in the evenings at home: the language, the drums, the cassava bread, the hudut stew with coconut and plantain.
In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed the language, dance and music of the Garifuna a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The music has seen a resurgence in Belize, carried by artists such as Andy Palacio, Mohobub Flores and Aurelio Martinez, and Dangriga is where much of that pulse is felt. Walk the waterfront, look for a place serving local plates, and listen for drums.
The big date is Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19, a public holiday that marks the arrival of the Garinagu in Belize. It was created by the activist Thomas Vincent Ramos in 1941 and was recognized in the southern districts in 1943. Dangriga celebrates it each year, and anyone visiting around then should expect a town full of music and people. Dangriga is also the departure point for boats to the cayes, and its airstrip is served by Maya Island Air and Tropic Air with flights to Belize City, Placencia and Punta Gorda.
Tobacco Caye
Tobacco Caye is a tiny island about 10 miles east of Dangriga. It covers roughly three acres, with a permanent population of about 20, and you can see the whole thing from one end to the other. Travelers reach it from Dangriga on a short boat ride, and the appeal is exactly that smallness: palms, sand, a few buildings and the reef right beside it.
A day here is about doing very little. You can look out over the water, walk the island in a few minutes, read in a hammock and let the afternoon pass. It suits travelers who want a break from road trips and itineraries, and who like the idea of a place where the mainland feels far away.
Bring a book, a hat and sunscreen. Because the caye is so small, there is little else to organize, and that is the point.
South Water Caye and Glover’s Reef
South Water Caye Marine Reserve was designated in 1996 and covers 117,875 acres of mangrove and coastal ecosystems in the Stann Creek District. It is the second largest marine protected area in Belize and lies on the inner side of the barrier reef, west of the most southerly part of Glover’s Reef. It forms part of the Belize Barrier Reef System, named a World Heritage Site in 1996.
From Dangriga, travelers can take a short boat ride to South Water Caye, Tobacco Caye or Glover’s Reef Atoll. South Water Caye is the one to choose if you want a protected reserve with reef and mangroves around you, while Glover’s Reef is the farther atoll, a ring of reef far out in blue water.
Hamanasi runs barrier reef tours scheduled daily, weather permitting, and its most popular ones are part of its Reef and Rainforest Package. For anyone staying in Hopkins who would rather book through a resort than arrange a boat from Dangriga, that is a straightforward route to the water.
Day trips from Hopkins compared
| Trip | Best for | How to go |
|---|---|---|
| Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary | Forest trails, birds and the jaguar story | Off the Southern Highway, about 20 miles south of Dangriga, or a scheduled Hamanasi adventure |
| Mayflower Bocawina National Park | Ziplining, waterfall rappelling, Antelope Falls | A scheduled Hamanasi adventure or your own transport |
| Dangriga | Garifuna culture, music and food | Along the coast, with its own airstrip and highway links |
| Tobacco Caye | A quiet island day on the reef | Short boat ride from Dangriga, about 10 miles east |
| South Water Caye Marine Reserve | Reef and mangrove scenery | Short boat ride from Dangriga |
| Glover’s Reef Atoll | An outer atoll far from the coast | Boat from Dangriga |
| Barrier reef tours | Time on the water without the logistics | Hamanasi, scheduled daily, weather permitting |
To choose, start with what you want to feel at the end of the day. If you want mud on your boots and a sky full of birds, Cockscomb is the match. If you want your heart rate up, Mayflower Bocawina gives you ziplines and waterfalls. If you want to understand the community you are staying in, Dangriga fills that gap, and if you want salt water and a hammock, the cayes do.
Combining is possible too. A day in the forest followed by a quieter day on the water balances the week, and a Dangriga visit fits well around Garifuna Settlement Day in November. The choice also depends on weather, because the boat trips depend on it and the rainforest parks are good to see when you have a clear, free day.
Tour or on your own?
A tour makes sense when the trip involves boats, guided activities or places where you want someone who knows the ground. Hamanasi, for instance, schedules rainforest adventures and reef tours, and the Reef and Rainforest Package includes them.
Going on your own suits the places where the point is wandering at your own pace. Dangriga is a town you can explore by walking the waterfront, finding a place to eat and talking with people. Cockscomb Basin also rewards a slower approach, since you can stay as long as the trails hold your interest, and the entrance fee for non-nationals is a single, simple cost.
Before booking any tour, confirm that the operator is licensed. In Belize, businesses providing tour services must hold a license from the Belize Tourism Board, and those licenses and renewals are required every year. Tour guides are licensed as well, and applicants must submit an original valid police record, which gives you a reason to expect a professional standard.
Also ask what is included. Some resort packages bundle several adventures, while an independent outing may cover only the guide, only the boat or only the entry. Find out whether the park fee is part of the price, what you should bring and what happens if the weather turns, since reef tours run weather permitting.
Think about the pace you want, too. A boat day to a caye is a full commitment to the water, a rainforest day asks for energy and a change of clothes, and a Dangriga day asks mostly for curiosity. Match the style of trip to the mood you are in rather than packing every day full.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
Money matters are simple to plan for: park fees such as the one at Cockscomb Basin are quoted in Belize dollars (BZD), so carry the currency you need for entrances. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which covers Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19, so keep an eye on the forecast if you travel then, especially for boat trips to the cayes. In Dangriga and everywhere else, the usual habits of looking after your belongings and staying aware of your surroundings serve you well.
